Pre-eclampsia symptoms?

Has anyone had any experience dealing with pre-eclampsia? My doctor said that one of the signs is a headache, and before I freak out, I was wondering if anyone had this symptom and how severe does the headache need to be before they call you in for a test?  I am thinking about getting out of work to head to the doctor, but thought I'd throw it out there to see other's experiences.  Also, other that headaches and high BP, other signs?

Re: Pre-eclampsia symptoms?

  • Thanks, all. Headache subsided with no other symptoms and last week I was at the OB and urine and BP were fine so I just had a moment of paranoia...

  • I talked to my doc about this a few weeks ago because I was concerned as well. He said really what gets his attention on pre-eclampsia is high BP and protein in urine. I was getting alot of headaches too but I read its pretty common plus I get tension headaches when I'm stressed.

Swelling in your extremities, headache, and sudden weight gain. ETA: and obviously high (for you) BP.
The amount of blood in your body is increasing to meet the demand of your baby, which can cause headaches, as well as hormonal changes, and a trillion other things. Unless this is abnormal for you, and if you aren't experiencing other symptoms, I wouldn't worry. If it makes you feel better, call and make them aware, but it's likely they won't have you rush in right away.

  • My midwife today said to call if I get a headache that doesn't go away after taking Tylenol.  I have a history of high blood pressure, so I'm being watched extra carefully.

Other symptoms, like pp said, are swelling, pain under your lower right breast area, blurred vision, protein in your urine, etc.

  • I was induced at 38 wks for this exact thing. I had severe swelling of my feet (read cankles for months, I had to wear Isotoner slippers for the last month becuse I couldn't get my feet into anything else), but each time I went in there was no protein in my urine and my blood pressure was great. At my 38wk appt my blood pressure was through the roof. Still no protein showing up in my urine. My dr was away on vacation so the np sent me over to the hospital. Blood pressure was crazy and after a 12hr. protein test they did find some protein and decided to induce. I say check your bp before you run off to the dr. I wouldn't automatically assume pre-e for a headache.

  • I had a headache accompanied with blurred vision (not a bad headache one that you'd get by sitting at a computer or focas in on your phone for to long), high blood pressure which kept going up, a lot of protien in my urine and some right under your boob pain which would come and go.

I also felt abnormally tired and sick like i had a tummy ache/overall felt off around my midsection but i don't think.thats a symptom per say.

  • You don't need to freak out if you are having headaches in your pregnancy, even if they are quite severe. Migraines are quite common during this time, especially if you have a history of it.

It's a good idea to contact your doctor about your headache. At the same time, watch out for the other symptoms of sudden changes in your vision, swelling of the face (edema of the hands and feet are common in pregnancy), sudden weight gain within 1-2 days and vomiting. Exceptional fatigue and pain in the upper sides of the stomach may be other symptoms as well.

The weight gain can be a useful indicator as it usually slows down around week 36-37 or even before that. Hope it's just a false alarm and everything will work out as you planned them. :)
