? for those who have already had your a/s

How long was your scan?

I've seen people mention theirs was 2 hours.  If that's normal then definitely didn't have a normal a/s with DS as it was maybe 30-40 minutes long.

With DD it was a total of 30 minutes. This time it was closer to 45 minutes.

  • Mine with #2 was on the longer side bc he was uncooperative. I was probably in the office for about an hour and a half total between the scan and the appt.
  • For both our boys the actual scan part was 20-30 minutes tops. Then some more waiting for the doctor to come in and do a quick look. So maybe 45 minutes from start to end.
  • ^ same, maybe 45 minutes total.

  • I haven't had my a/s for this one yet, but I've had two before and I'm quite sure they were closer to 30-40 minutes than two hours.

  • I haven't had mine for this pregnancy yet but in 2012 when I was pregnant with DS my scan was probably an hour or so long but I had an interning tech so she was pretty slow... & than the tech had to come in & make sure she got pictures of all the things she needed.

  • I haven't had it yet, but my OB's office scheduled my OB appointment for 50 minutes after the scan, so I can't imagine it takes more than 45 minutes.
  • Had mine yesterday. It lasted maybe 20 minutes but baby was very cooperative.
  • Haven't had one this time but the last two were 30-40 mins
  • This is reassuring. I was told the scan would take two hours, and then meet with the doctor after. Ive been dreading having a full bladder someone is pushing on for that long. Hopefully it will be shorter, like you guys are reporting.
  • Mine was about 45 mins but that was because the baby wasn't cooperating and a student wanted to try out the machine and I said ok cause that meant I could look at my baby that much longer. They never said anything to me about needing a full bladder and I've had three ultrasounds with no problems but when I had one for my daughter about ten years ago I still remember the ridiculously uncomfortable feeling of having a bladder close to bursting

  • My A/S with DS was around 30 minutes. My cousin sat for almost 2 hours and had I go back to finish, but she was pregnant with twins. As long as LO is cooperating I don't think it should take more than 45 min.

  • Has anyone had to do the normal external scan and a transvaginal for the a/s? My CNM wants both and I was just wondering if anyone else had that?

I had both with my last pregnancy. I had issues with PTL so my OB wanted my cervical length measured.

They don't make you come in with a full bladder? Lucky! During my NT scan I thought I was going to die, lol. The prawn wasn't cooperating so they made me drink more and then walk around. And then I had to lay back down and try again. The need to pee was so painful. I'm going to try to get away with drinking a little less this time.

I go to jefferson in Philadelphia and this is the first place I've been that didn't require a full bladder they didn't even mention it

I have to drink 32 oz by an hour before my a/s. I looked at the receptionist and told her it was hard enough to have all that and hold it when I was 8 weeks and they expect me to do it at 20? She did say that if I feel like I get too full I don't have to drink it all. Luckily, though, my office is really good about being on schedule.

I was told 30oz 45 mins before our appt. At my last appointment (the NT SCREENING one), I was so full the tech actually asked me to go use the bathroom after a few minutes in, lol! That was a painful experience.

  • With DS they told me 32 oz of water an hour before.  I totally did not do that!  The average bladder can only hold 18 oz anyway, so I just drank 20 oz when I got to the parking lot of the place.  They took forever to get me in, maybe 15-20 minutes, and by the time I went back there my bladder was nice and full.  I even had to empty it a bit.

My last office never mentioned a full bladder, and neither has this one. In fact, they make you give a pee sample as soon as you sign in.

My office has a sign on the inside of the bathroom doors that says "if you are scheduled for an U/S, please do not empty your bladder". I read that sign MID-PEE before my first U/S. The tech was able to see everything fine, she just had to push a bit harder.

One, then the other. If you haven't had a vaginal just a warning: it looks like a dildo and they put a condom on it. It's kinda surprising if you're not forewarned.

    -----------

I had the vaginal one for my first us. I was not expecting it. I was curious b/c they say empty bladder with one & full with the other. I have an appointment with my doc next week a few days before the a/s. I'll ask her what I should so then.

    Thanks!!

She did the abdominal scan first and completed the entire A/S. Then she measured cervical length transvaginally - took all of 60 seconds. Good luck!
