gagging and throwing up

I have only done purees and Paige just recently started enjoying puffs. I tried some of the 3rd food purees that are full of texture and thicker and both times she has gagged, turned red and thrown up. Is this normal? Makes me nervous to try table food! I know it takes practice but having major anxiety here! Should I try something else or water them down till she gets used to more textures?

Re: gagging and throwing up

  • I skipped purées entirely, so you may or may not find this helpful. If your LO likes puffs, I'd suggest just trying other solid foods. She can feed herself those. The gag reflex will go away soon!

  • I think no matter when you start very textured foods.. when you do start it though they will gag. The whole gagging, turning red, then throwing up is a defense thing so they won't choke. Connor will still gag sometimes, but it is considerably less than when we first started feeding him solids.

  • Camden was the same way but he is much better now about textures. I bought the textured 3rd foods also and at first I had to add a little more puree but now he can eat them no problems. It just took time and trying different things. Good luck :)

  • It's weird G does great with solid finger foods...but there is a lot of gagging with the third stage foods as well. Maybe bc they are not trying to "chew" them because they are purees???

ya know, i thought the same thing. She is used to puree off the spoon and i think she was just ready to swallow without chewing, causing the gagging.

Thanks yall, this is so nerve racking!!
  • We did BLW, so DD3 will actually try to chew things like applesauce and yogurt when I feed her. It's all about what they're used to. For your LO, I would give her soft table foods that she can feed herself. If she puts it in her own mouth, I think she'll have an easier time figuring out she needs to chew. (I also think stage 3 foods are kind of useless. How often do we eat purees with chunks in them?)
