Breastfeeding

pulling off breast

not new to bump but to this board, DD is 4 months old and I EBF.  She has always been a good latcher and I only feed from one breast at a feeding.  But the past week she gets all the easy stuff and then pulls off, latches for 2 seconds, pulls off, and it continues.  So I have been switching her to the other side where she does the same thing.  She is still going every 3 hours for the most part eating so I don't think she is hungry but it is really starting to drive me nuts.  I am hoping my supply isn't getting low, I do check and there seems to be more in most of the time.  Any suggestions would be great!

Re: pulling off breast

  • My DD will be 5 months old this weekend, but I remember a few weeks ago I was dealing with distracted nursing sessions like crazy! Unless the milk was flowing fast like it does during let down, she found other things to look at and want to do. So she'd pull my nipple in whatever direction, eventually pull off, but then remember she was still hungry and cry. Nursing sessions were taking 30-40 minutes and I was switching sides a few times. So it could be just a phase.

Does she ever get a bottle? The other explanation is that she's getting frustrated that the milk doesn't come out of the breast as fast as it does from a bottle. Make sure you are doing paced bottle feeding. There's a really good tutorial on YouTube.

  • My LO did this also. She is 10 months now and sometimes still does if she is getting really distracted by something or someone else in the room. I started kinda squishing my breast to get some more milk out for her and now she squeezes them on her own about half way thru so i guess it helped.
