Question for those who have had a Leep prior to pregnancy

If you had a leep in the past did you get a cerclage as a preventative measure before even seeing if you cervix was thinning?

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

Re: Question for those who have had a Leep prior to pregnancy

  • My OB just monitored things to see if I would need it, and had heavily considered it because I ended up having small portion of my cervix removed (about 5-7%) that makes my cervix not fully close, but it didn't cause any issues and they decided against it because of other factors.
I'm waiting to see what they want to do with this pregnancy, but I'm still waiting on referrals.

  • I'm 29 weeks pregnant and had a LEEP 4 yes ago--- they just monitor my cervix every time I have an appt-- and said they would keep monitoring until 33 weeks
  • I had a leep over 10 years ago. They checked my cervix at about  10 or 12 weeks. I can't remember the measurement, but it was in the normal range. I am now at 30 weeks and have had no problem.  Not everyone needs a cerclage because of a Leep, but definitely be sure the doctors monitor and measure your cervix. They'll let you know if you should be concerned.

  • I had a LEEP three years ago after several abnormal pap smear/biopsy results. I am seeing a different doctor now that I'm pregnant, and I mentioned my history with LEEP to her and told her my previous OB had said the LEEP could cause me to need a cerclage at some point during pregnancy if my cervix thinned.

She said 1.) that everything looked great and 2.) From her experience and research, there's no real tie between a LEEP and needing a cerclage later on. Sure, some people do, but it's much more rare than some docs make it out to be. She said she and a fellow med student actually set out to do a research study on this when they were in med school, and they couldn't even find enough women to study who had had a LEEP and then later on required a cerclage for a thinning cervix.

This is of course just one doctor's opinion, but it really helped calm my worries.
  • Thanks @jif1019.  I saw my ob yesterday (the doc who did my Leep retired) and we discussed my history and he said that they would do extra cervical checks to make sure it's not thinning but that he has seen tons of women with Leep histories and so far none of them have needed a cerclage so that made me feel better.

A doctor I had seen while my old OB was on medical leave and before I found a new, permanent OB was sort of all freaked out about  my getting pregnant again and said I would need a cerclage at 12 weeks.  I just wish they would all get on the same page.

  • I had a LEEP done a few years ago and my cervix went from 3.5 to 3.2 to 2.8 in a months' time so my OB did a preventative cerclage a week ago, just to be safe even though my high risk OB said I didn't need it. When he did the cerclage he knew 2.8 wasn't too bad but he said after seeing and feeling my cervix he's glad he did it.
  • Hi. I had a leep 14 months prior to conception. They said wait at least a year before TTC. I don't remember how much she took out but I know surgery was postponed for a month bc she wanted a 3rd and 4th oppinion bc it looked like they needed to take a lot but she didn't want to ruin my chance of having children. So dr was looking for someone to convince her it's not as bad as it looks.

So fast forward 18 months. I'm 20 weeks pregnant. The whole time they knew I had had a leep but no one really seemed to worry, I wasn't really either. At my 20 week checkup (yesterday) we found out it was a girl. YAY! That's what we wanted. We also found out my cervix measured 2.7 cm. drs said they want it between 3-5 so I'm just below the min. So right now they are just watching it and I go back to get re-measured in 1 week and then the following week as well. Then we'll go from there. Oh they asked if I saw any blood or discharge to see if it's staying closed or leaking but no, I haven't had a drop of blood or spotting this entire pregnancy.

So right now I'm not overly worried, just takin it easy till we get more measurements. I know the potential outcomes , cerclage etc. but I figure Drs these days are pretty good and they can handle it. I'll check back in, especially if anything interesting happens
