BTDT moms with gestationsl diabetes

Just got diagnosed and just was curious how many other mom's out there had it and went on to have normal/healthy births. For example no extra big babies or babies with blood sugar issues.

Not freaking out too much but a little worried for my LO.

PS, clearly not asking for medical advice please don't tell me to talk to my doctor. Already got my appt scheduled. Thanks!

  • My DS was normal to small in size.  6 lbs 11 oz (this was after 3 days of fluids, though, so I'm fairly certain he probaby actually only weighed around 6).  He did have low blood sugar but the doctors told us it was because of his extremely traumatic and prolonged delivery and not because of my diabetes which was very well-controlled.  You just never know...He's totally fine and healthy now.

Yes, come to the GD dark side. We would have cookies, but we can't eat them until after we deliver.

AFM, I had GD with both girls and am type II for this pregnancy. Both my girls were within 2 oz of my own birth weight of 6lbs 15oz (DD1 was 7lbs 1oz and DD2 was 7lbs even). At my last growth scan two weeks ago, this guy was measuring one day behind my EDD, right above the 50th percentile.

    You can do this. :)

  • Went into labor at 37w5d on my own. Vaginal delivery. 6lb 14oz boy with no blood sugar issues. I was diet controlled. FWIW, low blood sugar issues for the baby are temporary and easily fixed with a feeding or two.

Be warned though, your doctor may try to scare you with stories of big babies and fetal demise. These are scare tactics. Follow the diet, control your blood sugar, and you'll be fine even with occasional high numbers....in my non-professional opinion:-)

  • This all teaches me that guesstimating the size of the baby prior to birth is always wrong. Has anyone ever had a doc be correct when estimating how big baby will be?

I have noticed the same more often than not when people talk about growth scans versus actual birth weight!  Not just in GD moms, but everyone.

I think it depends on the level of scans you're getting. Fundal height measurements are notoriously wrong, but starting at 32 weeks I have weekly biophysical profiles due to the meds I'm on, and for me, those were always pretty darn accurate. I think they estimated the girls to be between 7 and 7.5 pounds, and they were both right at 7.

Could be I just have awesome techs. Could be a fluke. Could be that I just grow babies about that size and since I take care of my sugars, that's what I expect the babies to be (since me, my sister, and my brother were all also about that size).

I had GD with DD1 and insulin resistance and had to do daily injections. She was on the larger side @8.9 (born a week and half early) but I think that's just her not GD. She remained and still is large for her age. However she didn't have any problems because of the GD. And I didn't turn into a diabetic after. As a matter of fact shockingly I didn't get GD this time around. No idea how I lucked out on that one.

  • Okay, maybe not panicking so much anymore. I love to imagine the worst-case scenario for everything so I definitely was freaking myself out this morning. I don't know why I do that.. worrier by nature I guess.

    Thanks ladies!

  • I had it with DS - he was 2 weeks early, 8 lbs 8 oz.

I did NOT have it with DD1 - she was 2 weeks early and almost 10 pounds. (And I chose to follow the diet despite not having it).

I have it this time with DD2 - we shall see.

  • I just tested normal on mine but I need to go see the specialist at the diabetes center. I gained 20lb in 3 weeks and they are concerned. My thyroid is all off again and low iron levels. I guess it's more preventive than anything.
