GD check-in 9/29

Our weekly thread to discuss issues with other moms, share recipes, complain about pricking your fingers, or worry about blood glucose levels.

I'm linking the previous threads here, because we discuss a lot of issues that new people may want to peruse, plus, RECIPES!

Re: GD check-in 9/29

  • 1. How far along are you?
29w6d. Tomorrow I'm 30 weeks! Where has the time gone?
    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
I meet my new/sub OB on Wednesday, and I have a nutrition appointment at the MFM on Thursday.
    3. How are you feeling in general?
Good, just tired from the weekend. I had my non-baby shower, and then a surprise baby shower tacked onto it on Saturday, so I spent most of yesterday just recouperating.
    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
My numbers have been generally pretty good since going on Glyburide. I still have a few wonky "where in the HELL did this number come from" readings, but those tend to coincide on when I feel crampy, so I think it's a hormone surge from the placenta growing.
GTKY: Are you planning to blow your diet for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, baby shower, holiday, etc.)?
My birthday was two weeks ago and I had my shower yesterday. I ate probably more than I should have of carbs at lunch for both of those days, so I "forgot" to test. From here on out, though, pretty much sticking to the diet wholesale. I *might* have some cake for DD1's birthday at the end of October, but that's about it.

  • 1. How far along are you?
    29 weeks and 2 days.

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
Nothing new for me since I'm not 'technically' GD.  My next checkup with the midwife is 10/18/14.

    3. How are you feeling in general?
Overall I feel pretty good.  Still learning how to deal with limiting my carbs and sugars.  I went grocery shopping yesterday morning and learned that anything in a box is pretty much off limits for me.  Carbs & sugar are bad!

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
No numbers or meds for me to take.

GTKY: Are you planning to blow your diet for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, baby shower, holiday, etc.)?
I just got back from vacation in Perkins Cove, Maine.  I tried to eat well, but it didn't go over as well as it could have.  The group I was with wanted to go out to dinners and they weren't exactly the healthiest places.  I made sure to go grocery shopping yesterday morning when I got back and I spent a good portion of yesterday trying to plan out my meals.
Married on October 20, 2012.  Began trying in January 2013.
RE appointment & testing December 2013 - February 2014= Unexplained IF, possible endometriosis

    1. How far along are you? 28wks 2days

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? Oh man. 3 appts this week. I have my nutritionist appt today, my regular OB appt on Wed, and an endo appt on Thurs. I am really excited and kind of nervous about my first two appts. After the call from my endo that said I have to cut my carbs even more for snacks, I have been having a much harder time finding a balance of something that's under my carb allowance and keeps me full. I am also ready for my OB appt because this is the first time I will get to actually talk to her and see how GD is going to change this pregnancy and appts with her.

    3. How are you feeling in general? I'm tired, sore, cranky, and frustrated lol.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? Numbers are ok, with the occasional high one. Mostly just having trouble with food intake for snacks now. 15g carbs isn't a lot for every snack.

GTKY: Are you planning to blow your diet for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, baby shower, holiday, etc.)? Um. I cheated a little while out at a monster truck show this weekend and it wasn't good. Apparently after you haven't had  hardly anything sweet for a bit, a coke will make you pretty sick. However my 10yr (dating) anniversary is at the end of Oct and of course Halloween so I might indulge a little then.

  • Hey Ladies! :)

    1. How far along are you? 29w1d

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? Regular OB appt later this afternoon, waiting on the call from the nutritionist to review my numbers from last week.  I am prepared for them to put me on glyburide, because no matter what I seem to do, I cannot get my AM fasting #'s below 100, and any little stray off the exact portions on the meal plan seems to spike my #'s.  While I don't go overboard, life without a sweet treat every now and then is not a life I want to live.  I don't want to be miserable the last 11 weeks of my pregnancy.

    3. How are you feeling in general? Mentally - Frustrated about the numbers - hoping the meds will just make it easier.  Better living though chemistry, right? Physically I've been feeling pretty good

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? - see above  Thursday I was "forced" to sample some mini-cupcakes so I could tell my shower hostesses what flavors I'd want for my shower.  I had 3 mini (aka, small, bite-size, super-tiny) cupcakes about an hour before dinner, had exactly the same dinner as the night previous, and my #'s were 15 points higher.  And I would admit it to myself if I was going overboard, but these cupcakes were tiny!  all 3 of them combined were probably less than 1/2 the size of a normal cupcake.  So at that point I decided I was done with all this and was going to just eat whatever the hell I wanted for the next 11 weeks, because I clearly can't win.   Then my husband calmed me down, and I came to the conclusion that if they want to put me on meds so be it.  I follow their diet and portions to a T, but if a little splurge now and then is going to send me into a shame spiral it just isn't worth the stress.  I'm freaking out enough about just having a baby, I don't also need to stress about my food intake on top of it (and besides, the stress probably isn't helping my numbers go down anyway).

GTKY: Are you planning to blow your diet for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, baby shower, holiday, etc.)? Yes, yes, and  yes :)  My birthday is next week, unsure exactly what I will want yet, but there will be frosting involved.  My BB shower is the 12th, and I know there will be a massive sweets table that I plan on partaking in as well.  I'll go walk 3 miles to help burn off the sugar if I need to.

  • 1. How far along are you?
    28.5 weeks

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
I have never done one of these before, but I am joining in because I just got off the phone with my dr. and found out I failed my glucose tolerance test.  I had a minor freak out on the phone with my mom after googling (always a bad idea), and now I'm just ready to learn as much as I can.  I'm waiting on a call from the Endocrinologist to schedule an appointment.  Beyond that, I have no idea what to expect.

    3. How are you feeling in general?
Wonderful pregnancy-wise.  Very stressed and worried in-general.

  • I'm 26.6 weeks.

I have an appointment on thurs. to go over my numbers. They have been good,so I really want him to cut down my number of pricks a day. My husband and I are going on our babymoon next Sunday and it would be nice not to have to plan activities around blood checks.

    I'm feeling pretty good.

Numbers have been good. I think I can probably add in some foods I cut out, but I want everyone to look great at my appt.

Well, I will be on vacation next week and I will probably loosen up a little. It would be pretty tough to eat how I am now while at a resort. Trying not to cheat-cheat, but I have to have some little treat or I'll be pissy on my relaxing vacation!
  • @swhitis Welcome and I'm glad you found this thread!  It is very overwhelming at first but I hope you can relax after your Endo appointment.  In the meantime, feel free to ask this group of ladies any questions you have.  We're not medical professionals but we like to pretend:)

    1. How far along are you? 29w1d
    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?  No doctor appointments since last Monday's ultrasound.
    3. How are you feeling in general?  I was doing fabulous until I was hit with SPD (aka PGP) last Wednesday.  It turns out I had it last pregnancy, too, but I thought it was just regular third trimester aches and pains.  Apparently you're not supposed to feel like you can't walk at any point during your pregnancy.  I am taking it a little easier now and wearing a support belt most days.  I have also started regular visits to the chiro (something I should have been doing the past several months).  I've also noticed I'm getting full faster as baby keeps growing!  This is actually a welcomed pregnancy symptom as it helps me spread out my meals and snacks without feeling hungry in between.  Otherwise, life is great!  Still sleeping well and no lower back pain.
    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? Random high numbers last week.  But honestly testing is something I need to work on.  I was so religious about it last pregnancy but having a toddler really changes things.  An hour after breakfast I am usually scrambling to get him ready and us out the door.  No good excuse for the other times of day but I frequently forget to test.  I need to stay on top of it now that hormone surges can really mess with numbers.
GTKY: Are you planning to blow your diet for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, baby shower, holiday, etc.)? I was very good last pregnancy about not cheating.  I was so paranoid because my OB kept telling me how big my baby was and she didn't believe I was controlling my sugars.  I had to prove her wrong and do everything I could to keep my baby healthy.  I am much more relaxed this time around.  With that said, now that I've entered the third trimester, I'm trying stay honest and record everything I eat and stick to the carb allotments at each meal and snack.  No more sneaking cookies between meals:(

@Anna930 Yes, 7g protein = one serving and about one oz of cheese and meat. 15g carbs and I think 3g fat is one serving as well.

ETA: Yup, just checked it on my GD app. One ounce of cheddar cheese has 7g protein, 1 egg has 6-7g protein, one ounce of beef roast has 8g protein, 1/4 cup of cottage cheese (2 ounces by weight) has 7-8 g protein, one ounce peanut butter has 8 g protein, etc. So, looks like cottage cheese is the one that 1oz by weight doesn't equal a full serving of protein, but then again, one cup of cottage cheese has 15 g carbs and 32 g protein, so while you'd have to count the carbs for it, it would be packed with protein for you. Pretty much as much as you'd need for an entire meal.

    1. How far along are you? 29 weeks 1 day

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?  Had the follow up fetal echo last week (all was good!) and first growth u/s.  I have't heard from my doctor's office yet about the growth u/s, but the tech said everything was measuring right on.  Not sure exactly what that means but I'm taking it that all was well.

    3. How are you feeling in general?  Exhausted, sore and more exhausted.  My 3 year old had a bout with a stomach virus last night and I was up most of the night catching puke.  No bueno.  Unfortunately I think I have a version of it, too, although it's coming out the other end with me.  (tmi??)

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?  Nope.  Holding steady.  I was  little high a couple of times over the weekend but that's my own fault.  I was feeling like I needed to let go a little.  And, because I have insulin as a crutch I know I can do it ocasionally and then use a little extra meds.  My doctor even gave me the ok on this.  He's kinda awesome.

GTKY: Are you planning to blow your diet for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, baby shower, holiday, etc.)?   See above.  I did allow myself to carb up a little the last couple of days.  I think when diabetes is a chronic condition, like it is for me, you have to let go every now and then.  It's a little different then knowing you'll only have to do it for 3 months.  I'm still getting used to managing with meds because when I'm not pregnant I don't have to be on insulin.  So, it's a little weird to me to be "allowed" to blow things every now and then and just use a little extra meds to cover myself.  It doesn't make sticking myself with a needle 4 times a day worth it, but it certainly is a small amount of compensation.

This. SO this. I'm on metformin when not pregnant for PCOS and my "is it there or is it not there" type II, so I generally don't have to be super duper careful all the time like I do when pregnant. I've been generally not worrying about my diet for the past 3-4 years, and all of my A1Cs have been in the 5 range. So, I'll be very interested to see how this pregnancy will affect my numbers. I went on Byetta and Victoza injectibles right after I originally got my type II diagnosis, and they helped my body get back to relative normal. I wonder if I need to do another round of them in a year or so if I have sugar problems again.

I can't do the commercial fun almonds because of the soy sauce (not GF) and added MSG/autolyzed and hydrolyzed proteins, so I've made my own. Just got some raw almonds from the bulk aisle and made my own smokey ones with some GF soy sauce, a bit of balsamic vinegar, some liquid smoke, salt, and a bit of agave nectar. Cover them with the flavorings and roast in the oven for an hour or so (stirring every so often to keep them from sticking). They are really good, and DH sneaks them to put on his salads. :D

You could probably come up with other flavor combinations, like Chex Mix flavoring, a dill kind my grandma used to do on oyster crackers, and maybe even some dark chocolate ones (YUM!). Now I want to go experiment.

  • Hi ladies! I'm a N14 lurker, I'm not far ahead of some of you since my edd is 11/28.

If any of you have a Kroger/Dillons grocery chain near you, check out their yogurt. Mine (Kroger) carries a kind called CarbMaster that has 60cals, 3g sugar, 4g carbs & 9g protein. This has been a lifesaver for me & allows me to eat a bit more with snacks or meals since regular yogurts are carb loaded!

Also, feel free to post any time. :D I'll be induced the first week in December if I don't deliver before then, and since I'll be 38 weeks two days before Thanksgiving, there's a good chance we'll be closer in delivery than I am to some of the D14 moms.

  • Just got back with the nutritionist and I am now convinced my endo hates me lol. I had to bring in my logs and one of the first things the nutritionist said, "You aren't eating enough. You aren't getting enough calories. We are going to fix this." I almost started crying lol. She said there is NO way a pregnant woman could survive off of 30 carbs for every meal with only 15g of carbs per snack. She told me since my numbers have been good so far, stick to 30 for breakfast, and then 45 for lunch and dinner and if they are still good and I am still hungry I can go up to 60. She was also confused as to why I am testing 6 times a day but I'm not going to worry about that. I can eat! Whoop!

My next appt with the endo is on Thursday. We shall see what she says.

So just got the diagnosis this morning. Thanks bdblz for pointing this thread out!

    1. How far along are you? 30 weeks + 1 day

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? Just found out, waiting to schedule an appt for some sort of class, I guess on how to manage everything. Have to go pick up a thingy to stick myself with later today. So excited to start that..

    3. How are you feeling in general? Kinda bummed, worried about my LO and how it might effect him.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? I'll skip this one for now, no idea!

GTKY: Are you planning to blow your diet for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, baby shower, holiday, etc.)? My shower is this weekend at a cupcake shop. So I'm sure I'll break and have at least a bite of a cupcake.

@kdm06c Yup. We Internet strangers were right and your endo was weird. :D And, the diet your nutritionist says to follow sounds pretty much like the one I follow, that I posted in the first thread.

Glad you got some reprieve from the strict numbers. Do you still have to test one hour after eating or two hours after now?

@devinefisch welcome! This is my first GD pregnancy. I was pretty overwhelmed at first too, but these ladies have been an amazing source of information and support.

@bowlwoman‌ she seemed confused at to why I am testing 6 times a day and also that my number was suppose to be under 120 after 1hr, but she didn't say to change it so I am going to stick with what the endo said for now. I am kind of hoping she changes it at my appt on Thursday. We shall see.

  • Hi Ladies,

I will be joining you all. Just got the call from the OB today that I failed my 3 hr test and now have GD.

    1. How far along are you? 27w3d

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
Going to see the nutritionist and diabetic nurse on the 7th.
    3. How are you feeling in general? I feel ok, just have to pee a lot and insomnia.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? Not sure yet, I'm sure they will put me on a diet plan. Right now, I will cut out as much carb as possible until I see the nurse next week.

GTKY: Are you planning to blow your diet for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, baby shower, holiday, etc.)? Probably not, I don't want to take any chances.

@BdblZ They have me take the glyburide at dinner time, so I don't have to worry about the sugar crash in the middle of the night and also because some of my dinner numbers have been over or skirting the line. My fasting numbers are still good, even taking it 12 hours before with dinner.

Maybe you can do that? Waking up at 3AM to test is funny. :D Be sure to keep a sugary snack nearby, though, in case you do get a sugar crash. The last thing you or DH want to do is stumble around at 3AM looking for OJ or candy.

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? My first growth ultrasound is scheduled for Thursday and also having a NST. My OB appointments are weekly at least for the beginning of this diagnosis.

    3. How are you feeling in general? Pretty crappy weekend with alot of back pain and been really tired. Think the exhaustion is adjusting to lower carbs and not getting my afternoon soda.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? Number have been good only been checking since Thursday. My out of range haven't been horribly high.

GTKY: Are you planning to blow your diet for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, baby shower, holiday, etc.)?Going on a babymoon in a few weeks will probably have a few more than usual but I hope that I will be able to balance things.

  • @bowlwoman I was kinda surprised at the bedtime-timing also, as i've had a few high dinner readings too.  But we shall see...as my regular OB reminded me today that my insulin resistance will probably still get worse as the placenta keeps growing, i am guessing they will continue to need to adjust my med/dosing schedule before I am through with this.
  • @BdblZ yeah, be careful then. I took my meds tonight with dinner, had a number of 88 after eating, and just had a blood sugar crash a couple of hours later. I'm in a late-night meeting with India, so normally I would have eaten my snack by now. I just downed a handful of chocolate chips and an orange, so I hope I feel better soon. If not, I may go attack all the popcorn.

  • Ok, ladies. I went to Sonic to get slushes for the girls, and I got a New York hot dog (no bun) and a small limeberry slush for a late lunch. There should be no carbs to count for the hot dog (just the dog, saurkraut, mustard, and onions), and Sonic's nutrition info said the lemonberry slush has 51 total carbs for the small and I didn't drink the whole thing. Keep your fingers crossed. If my blood sugars come out normal, I may be doing this once a week.

  • 28w4d today and our little lady aced her first non-stress test! (Ok, I'm not sure you can "ace" it but the doc said everything looks good which is great news for me!) We'll be going for NSTs every week now, US too. She sure is keeping me busy. Glyburide is keeping my numbers in check. My shower is in less than 3 weeks and I'll definitely be having a cupcake. Made by the same woman who did my wedding cake, I am sooooo looking forward to them!

  • 88!  Wow!  Today must just be a good day.  I had no protein for dinner and still got a 113 after an hour.  My mom was trying to be nice and brought us some meals this weekend.  She brought my husband's favorite cream cheese mushroom enchiladas.  There is no meat.  Just cream cheese, sour cream, and mushrooms in tortillas and smothered in enchilada sauce.  I had two. After my high numbers recently, I almost didn't test because I didn't want to see another bad number.  It was so delicious and I don't have to feel guilty now!

  • So I got my finger stick kit yesterday and made my husband go ahead and stick me because I was freaking out thinking it was going to be so painful and I was just going to sit around dreading it until I actually had to start testing. I was really surprised that it didn't hurt more. The last finger stick I had was before I was pregnant and donating blood. I feel like my finger was sore for a few hours after.

So anyway, still waiting for a call from my Dr office to set up an appt so I can learn how often I have to stick myself and what my levels are supposed to be. Also I never realized handling GD was going to entail so much carb counting! I thought it'd be just don't eat sweets. Blah. This sucks.

Though good to know Lemon Berry slushes are still on the menu! Those are sooo good!

That sounds delish! I wish I had a sonic nearby.
  • So ... after two weeks of following the GD diet (ok, really one week since I was on vacation last week and didn't really count carbs) I'm losing weight.  I'm down almost three and a half pounds.  I was shocked when I stepped on the scale this morning.  I had only gained 12 pounds with my pregnancy and I'm down to a 9.5 lb gain.  :-/  I put a call into my midwife to see if this is normal.

@CandaceC1020‌ It's been normal for me to lose weight during all three of my pregnancies. I usually wind up having only a net gain of 5 pounds throughout the entire thing.

Definitely check with your midwife, but there are also other factors at play. If you were overweight to begin with, eating healthier, etc. Also, as long as the baby is growing on target and you are eating enough, your body just may be more efficient.

  • @CandaceC1020‌ I lost 4lbs for the first week when I was still figuring everything out. I realized I was actually eating too clean and needed to add some good fat (cheese, milk, yogurt) and more calories. I am still down a few lbs, but haven't lost anymore since.

  • @bowlwoman - I definitely was a bit fluffier when I got pregnant thanks to clomid and the other drugs that I was pumping into my system.  I thought I ate pretty healthy but apparently I loved carbs and sugars more than I realized.  I miss my bowl of cereal every day.  I'm exercising too - I try to walk a minimum of 2 miles each day.  I just want a healthy pregnancy with a happy little girl handed to me at the end.

  • @kdm06c - I think that could be part of my problem.  I am eating really high protein and I'm trying to make sure that I get enough carbs in.  I'm allowing my snacks to be greek yogurt (about 18g of carbs), a chocolate chip granola bar (17g of carbs) and sometimes I'll even have a piece of buttered toast or a PBJ sammich.

  • 1. How far along are you?
    31 weeks

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
Had an ultrasound, and everything looked good, growth, etc. was in normal range.

    3. How are you feeling in general?
Feeling ok,   but totally craving a pumpkin donut and pumpkin spice latte

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
I'm only 4 days into the monitoring, but so far all of my numbers have been good, so feeling encouraged.   I do find it challenging to have to figure out the snacks/meals/testing schedule around my work meetings.

GTKY: Are you planning to blow your diet for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, baby shower, holiday, etc.)?
I have both my baby shower and birthday in the next month,  so might need to cheat a bit on those days.
Also I'm heading to two baseball playoff games the next two days -  will see how hard it is to find appropriate food.   Go Orioles :)

  • @MD12314‌ Glad you're getting things lined out with diet and testing. The first week is usually the toughest.

    And go Cardinals! :D
