February 2015 Moms

How has your pregnancy been so far?

So I would consider my pregnancy to have been really good for the most part so far. I never threw up (only nausea and a lot of food aversions, but I'll take that), I've had very little to no weight gain (started pregnancy overweight so this is a big deal to me), and just feeling good in general.

Only real issues I've had are SI joint/nerve pain pretty much only when I work and in just the last week I've had some dizzy/weak spells from what I contribute to my growing blood volume. I'm going to focus on getting more iron rich foods to help that.

How has your pregnancy gone and how have you been feeling?

Total opposite. Diagnosed with mild HG at 8 weeks.  Went to hospital on weekends to get Fluids. Didn't want to miss work as I don't have much PTO left.  Was so sick lost almost 10 Lbs.  Still throwing up about 1-2 times a day.  This is down from 7-8.  Been on several meds for nausea and headaches. Developed hives 2 weeks ago and doc now tells me I have PUPP and will have it the rest of my pregnancy.  Super fun as I'm itchy all over and have to hear from ladies in my office "don't scratch you'll get stretch marks." Yeah easy for you to say you don't have hives all over your stomach and down your legs. Finally gained the weight back and been able to eat a bit more but not much. Thanks for asking though!

ETA: In no way am I bitching.  I understand that every woman is different.  I would do it all over again too.  As long as my little man is healthy its really all that matters. My DH is super supportive and actually got excited when I gained a little bit of weight it was so cute...

  • I'm with @schnitz9‌ . It's been rough. At 21 weeks I'm still throwing up, and I'm not able to sleep. Mostly its the drama though. We have not had an appointment yet where I haven't left in tears. Each time they've told us something was wrong it turned out to be nothing, thank god! But I'm emotionally exhausted from it. We' re still waiting on results of our last scare. I can't wait for baby to come out, hopefully healthy!

  • Oh, I feel bad for the ladies who have had it rough! I am doing fine. We have just been soooooo busy maybe that's a distraction. I am 20 weeks today and just realized it because I have my anatomy scan this afternoon. Now, I'm crazy nervous though!

I was a bit sick at the beginning but that faded by 10 weeks. Since then a bit of sciatica but that could have nothing to do with pregnancy since I never get a chance to sit down!
  • I would answer, but I'd get flamed for sure.

I'm not sure being "sooooo busy" is a reason you've had an easy pregnancy. I'd put that down to luck, more than likely. There are plenty of moms here suffering (still) that definitely aren't lazy. Everyone has busy lives.

Perhaps I should have elaborated that when I was pregnant with my son I was NOT soooooooo busy running after him and renovating a house and my pregnancy became extremely difficult because of severe depression and anxiety, on top of an autoimmune issue I have and take shots for daily. I was not busy at all because I was unemployed and had no children at the time. I have managed to evade all that worry and dwelling on my illness this time around though and i think it's in large part because my mind has been occupied elsewhere. So, for my bad pregnancy issues, being busy is certainly something that has helped.

Edited to delete my last comment because I was snippy but that bothered me because I never try to intentionally be mean or give people a hard time in life. My circumstances/pregnancy issues are different than nausea etc so I should have elaborated. Certainly not implying laziness causes morning sickness.

  • Well, on a good day, I can hardly walk. It hurts to stand, sit, lay or move in general. I'm crampy all the time and I just want to sleep,  but I can't.

But other than that, my hair looks nice :P

This pregnancy is a mess compared to the easy one with DS.

  • For the most part I have mixed feelings, I love being pregnant and I feel blessed that our family is growing (as I'm sure most are) BUT the actual pregnancy sucks.

First tri I was constantly on and off of bedrest, nausea sucked, but not as terrible as some ladies, and good lord the bleeding not spotting but full on bleeding. As soon as the morning sickness stopped the aches and pains kicked into high gear. Now If I lay or sit wrong I can't breathe, the skin on my stomach feels like it's ripping apart leaving beautiful reddish purple marks that feel like bruises, and now some of my freaking maternity shirts are getting too short, thanks to me measuring 2 months ahead.

A PP mentioned having an autoimmune issue and had to be on shots, well not only have I been there and done that but I had complications that put my pregnancy at an even higher risk. My bleeding issues took a huge turn for the worse a few weeks back when my iron levels took a bad drop and I was taken off of blood thinners. So now I live everyday monitoring my self for a whole new set of problems knowing that my blood issues are known for preterm labor (add twins to that mix), late term loss and stillbirths.

If it wasn't for my Doppler I don't know how I would get through each day.

  • Mine was pretty terrible, hospitalized twice before 7 weeks for extreme vomiting, been on a slew of medications since then, always changing. There was like..2-3 weeks where I couldn't keep anything down but beets and that gave me terrible runs! at about 20 weeks I turned a bit of a corner with my morning sickness and I can now keep some food down and I actually get hungry. Ive lost weight and now have to see a dietician to monitor my weight/food intake.

Everything has been good with baby so that's a plus, and I have been feeling baby since 14+2 so it helped reissure me considering I miscarried 2 weeks before getting pregnant.

My husband has been working away most of my pregnancy (3 months he has been gone) with limited contact so taking care of a acreage and animals and working full time while being so sick was a challenge. He gets back in three days (riiight as I am feeling better)

  • Better than some, worse than others. I get sick, have lots of aches and pains and cry fits are regular for me now but there's been no bleeding, hospital visits or a need for more than OTC meds.

Ugh I feel your pain.  When people ask me how I'm feeling now and I happily say well I'm only throwing up 1-2 times a day now they are shocked that thats an improvement.  I think the worst was that I was always hungry too but couldn't keep even water down. I hope the dietitian is working for you.  A good friend of mine is one and she's been helping me out for the past 2 months.

Me too! And my biggest struggle is people not understanding, my "friend" was always like--its all in your head, morning sickness isn't that bad, just eat a banana that's what I did. Or You don't LOOK like you've lost weight, just eat more, when I had to tell work I needed time off for the dietician. Or I had bad morning sickness too--its not a big deal, when she would ask me how I am feeling and I would say terrible. I didn't have it as bad as some people but I would NEVER downplay someone else's symptoms. I even had a friend say I would NEVER take medication for morning sickness right to my face on numerous occasions.. Ya ok, before I was hospitalized he first time I sat in a cold bathtub of water for  over 24 hours straight puking foam and stomach acid into a bowl, crying (no tears because I was so dehydrated) and asking my husband if I we could adopt instead. My husband even asked me to terminate at 8 weeks because he was afraid this would kill me, without medication, I wouldn't be having this baby.

@schnitz9‌ For the PUPPP, try washing with Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap. It was amazing for me! I had horrible PUPPP all over my upper thighs and on my left butt cheek (sorry tmi), but when I started using that soap, I felt relief almost immediately. I think they also make lotion or something like that to help, as well. Hope it works for you!

  • I feel like a braggart but to be honest it has been really great. From weeks 6 through 11 I had some nausea but never threw up. It wasn't bad honestly, I was still able to eat and go to work no problem. I also was never super tired. But I am also the type that if I feel crummy I just get myself up and get ready for the day, and keep a positive attitude. I think that goes the longest way towards feeling good.

Since week 12 I have felt amazing - as good if not better than before getting pregnant. To add to it, my skin, hair, and nails have seriously never looked better. I also haven't had any mood swings or emotional issues that I have heard about - but I am always pretty happy and even keeled. The baby is growing exactly on track (measured within 1 day at 20 weeks) but I haven't put on any weight. I was average weight, size 6 before pregnancy and lost about 8 lbs in the first trimester and have gained about 6 back. I think I am sort of losing fat but gaining baby weight at the same time as I am being very good with my diet and exercise but the bump is still growing as it should. I started seeing a chiropractor at 6 weeks just to keep my pelvis aligned and be proactive about possible aches and pains and believe this has helped a ton.

As far as negatives - a little round ligament pain, a few calf cramps during sleep, some headaches around week 12, 3 nose bleeds in the first trimester, and running is not comfortable because it feels like a cantaloupe is sitting in my belly. Nothing too rough though!

Fingers crossed things continue on this path, but so far I love pregnancy. I'm ready to have my body back though and meet this little one! It will be several years before I do this again :)

  • I had some nausea (no vomiting) at the beginning, but that's mostly gone. Now I have some glorious swollen feet; they usually come after longer-than-usual days. I've become super clumsy, which my husband thinks is hilarious, but it really just painful because it always seems to be elbows and knees that find the corners of things. #-o

Oh, and my breathing sounds like Darth Vader...

  • Just posting before I get flamed - I don't mean to imply that you can just use positive attitude to cure morning sickness. I just mean that on my worst days, with the help of DH, I got up and made the most of it when I could have laid in bed. My best friend ate well and took great care of herself and still threw up constantly for 20 weeks straight so I know everybody is different. I really just chalk my experience so far up to luck. No one in my family has ever had a difficult pregnancy or a lot of sickness that I know of. I think a lot of it too is that I am young (24) and was in great health before getting pregnant which seems to make things easier for most women.

Yep. Luck. You are lucky. I'm really happy that there are some moms who have the enjoyable pregnancy experience. I'm not being sarcastic. As long as SOMEONE feels good while pregnant, then at least this whole crazy biological mess makes sense. It certainly seems to me that most people do not feel good while pregnant.

As for me, I'm now just counting down to viability. We had a big scare last Thursday when I started having real contractions (not braxton hicks) that increased in frequency (ie were rythmic, like labor contractions). We went to labor and delivery thinking that it might be the end for our 20 week baby. I saw a brand new baby being wheeled with her mom to a rooming in suite while checking in. The dad was following with the cart of baby supplies. All i could think was "We might not get to hold a living baby."

They stopped the contractions and determined I was not in preterm labor. I was sent home to rest. if the contractions come back I have to go back to the labor and delivery ward. Since Thursday, my stomach/uterus/abdominals have been really sore and I've been exhausted. I hope things go back to normal soon.

So many things can go wrong during pregnancy. In our BMB there are people going through many of the hard things that can happen. Those of you with normal, uncomplicated pregnancies are lucky and I'm glad that you recognize that it's just blind chance on the most part. This kind of post is hard on people, even if it is started with the best intentions.

  • Wow... I feel terrible for the ladies that have had a rough go of it! I hope things get better or at least you have super strong babies because of it.
  • I felt so dumb in this one. I have two boys and had a pretty grand pregnancy with each of them, very little sickness or anything. This one? omg, it's like smalls is giving me payback for each great pregnancy times 10. I've been so so sick. Anti nausea meds are great but only help so much. I haven't gained anything, lost a few lbs, which i'm also overweight so i'm cool with it. But just been so sick. I've had to get fluids multiple times because i'm so dehydrated. And all the body symptoms, ugh it just sucks.
It makes it kinda hard to enjoy the pregnancy, and there have been multiple times when i've told dh that this one is it, i don't want to do this again. Because it's how i feel :/

  • @schnitz9 I totally agree with PP that you NEED to buy Grandpa's Pine Tar soap immediately. That was the only thing that got me through PUPPP with my first pregnancy. I went to whole foods and bought like 5 bars at a time - they probably thought I was crazy.

Really sorry you are going through this. It is truly miserable.

  • I would say I have had a fairly easy pregnancy. I feel awful for the women who had bad morning sickness or even HG. I can't even imagine. I did have morning sickness from weeks 5-14, but I only actually threw up twice. I have gained the proper amount of weight form where I started to still be in the "normal" range. The only new symptoms I am feeling is the painful ab and stomach pains. Sometimes it feels like my skin is going to rip open and other times it feels like I did 300 crunches. But that stuff is easy for me to handle. I just feel very blessed to not have had much morning sickness. Our AS is on Wednesday so we will see a clearer snapshot of where I am then.

My hips hurt, back hurts, knees hurt when I exercise, etc. Relatively speaking it's been fine, but I don't relate at all to people who say they love being pregnant. SOMETHING always hurts. What's to love about that? I love that I am pregnant, that I will get this baby, but it's a means to an end and nothing more, at least at this point.

My first pregnancy I was an "I love pregnancy woman". I never had any major issues (other than my hips bothering me and that's cause I twisted my pelvis in college and that aches sometimes no matter what).

This pregnancy is somewhere in the middle. I definitely left the whole loving pregnancy behind in 2013 though.

The only thing I can say is the best symptom is I haven't had a real period since September 2012 lol

For my first pregnancy and don't blaze me but I don't feel pregnant at all! Some days I forget until I put clothes on or hop into bed. But that aside at 8 weeks I was diagnosed with a cervical polyp! I know they are common in pregnancies due to hormones but this isn't your normal little pea size polyp! It grew to be the length of my vagina! TMI sorry. My OB said she has never seen a polyp that size and seemed quite scared about it. I seen a high risk doctor for a second opinion and she says they will not touch it due to risk of the baby. So I had to be placed on permanent pelvic rest for my entire pregnancy. Let me tell you that really sucks right now.
But to all you woman who have had rough pregnancies you have to be the strongest women ever. You all rock!

@schnitz9 -- I just posted in spam about itchy hives that appeared last week and have an appt for tomorrow to see what it is.  @ckimberley14 suggested that same Grandpa's Pine Tar soap that popped up here, too, so it must be a lifesaver.  Hope you find relief soon!!  (Itchy skin SUCKS.)

Had to go to the hospital a few weeks ago had hives all over my stomach arms and legs. With having severe allergies that I give myself shots for I had to make sure it wasn't a reaction that I needed my epi pen for. Turns out its PUPP ( do not google image will scare the shit outta you) I'll have it the rest of my pregnancy and I have cream and an anti-histamine. Good luck!

One word sums up my pregnancy thus far: exhaustion.

Glad you know it's PUPPP but totally feel for you that it is. Mine was mild compared to yours! Hope those all work for you.

  • First tri morning sickness, no energy. Second tri hungry and more energy. This about sums it up.

Mine has been relatively uneventful as well. Minimal nausea and mostly just fatigue. Second tri has been great aside from the nagging anxiety of having A/S irregularity and a bunch of follow ups. If we have another, I would seriously consider forgoing as many u/s as possible just to avoid the extra stress during what I would like to be an enjoyable experience.

This is part of why I'm okay I haven't had an ultrasound yet. I do think I would have been more stressed if I had. I have no choice but to rely on the Doppler and assume everything's fine. A although I won't be convinced there's only one in there until I see it on the screen.
