Buying new bras - what to get?

My cups are finally starting to run over! My endowment has always been, at best, average, so finding a size that fits won't be a problem unless these things really go into overdrive, but I really don't want to spend a lot of money on something that may only fit for a month.

This is my first pregnancy, so I really don't know what to expect about how big they'll get, but I'm wondering what other people have bought for growing boobies.  Next cup size up?  Are there bras for growing boobs?  Nursing bras?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Re: Buying new bras - what to get?

  • I've been wearing a super stretchy bra that is similar to a sports bra. It seems to be doing the trick so far. I'll probably buy a bra that is a size bigger (or 2) around the rib cage since all your organs move up there to accommodate for baby and it typically expands your rib cage out more. My advice is to get sized and then buy the size you are currently, then when/if it happens again, go back and get resized. Or if you don't have time for that, purchase a few differently sized bras on sale at like Target. Sometimes you can find nice ones on the cheap for $5.

  • I just bought a nursing bra at target. I noticed it had about 5 settings for around the ribs and most of mine have always just had three. I fit it to the tightest setting and hopefully my ribs won't expand that much. As for the cup size I just got what fit and was comfortable. It was only $16 and that is about what their regular bras were so I figured if I have to buy a bigger size I can but if it continues to fit I will already have a nursing bra. I went to Soma intimates but their nursing bras were around $50. I figured I would wait on those until I deliver to make sure they fit.
  • I know there's no standard answer, there's many different things that can happen to your boobs. For me I went up from a B to a C by the 2nd tri and my boobs stayed the same bra size even through engorgement and the entire time I nursed, even till the end. Sure they got a lot fuller but not a cup bigger.

The nursing bras I bought weren't expensive, around $20 which is what I'd have had to pay for a regular bra. I chose nursing over regular because to me a 50% chance that I could use it later was better than a 0% chance I'd use it later, for the same price.

  • I don't have anything to add as I'm a FTM and at 17 weeks am still wearing my original bras. For weeks now I have been thinking "any day now" I'll need a larger size but so far they just full my cup much more.

Mainly I just wanted to thank everyone for their responses bc this is really helpful. I never knew that the size when your milk first comes in might not be the size for the first few months of nursing. When do you gals recommend buying the first nursing bra? Shortly before birth and then have nursing tanks ready for the early days? There is so much I don't know!
  • I just bought 2 regular bras at Kohls and just had to get a larger band size because when you go up a band size, the cup size increases too, even though it's still a D. For the first couple weeks of nursing, the sleep nursing bras and nursing camis are great until your milk is regulated, then get regular nursing bras.
  • Great advice here! I had the same questions. I ended up buying one nursing bra at Target one cup size bigger. They have more hooks in the back for an expanding chest- the next #size up felt way too big right now. Can't bring myself to spend more $ til I know what these puppies are capable of. And since I know zero about what to expect and have been waiting for full boobs to *finally* arrive since I was 15, I went the simple route since I needed more room in the 1st tri.
  • I ended up buying one larger size bra (cup and around) with no underwire for the end as I could NOT stand wearing a bra but knew I needed to. I waited until DD was around 2weeks old before I ventured out with her and DH to Target to buy a few nursing bras.  Like everyone said, you most likely will not be going out for the first week or so and nursing tanks or nursing bras for night-time worked the best for a while!

  • Thank you all for weighing in!  My mum set aside a Kohl's coupon for me, and I have both Target and Kohl's just a few minutes from my house, so I'm ready to do some shopping!
