What's baby coming home in?

Hey Ladies, how is everyone doing? Sorry it's been awhile since I've posted...Im sure you all understand how hectic everything is being in the home stretch.

Quick question, I'm a FTM due 10/30 living in the NYC area. I was just wondering what you ladies planned on bringing your precious babies home in? I do live 5 minutes away from the hospital I will be delivering at, but I could use some advice. So far Im thinking hat, footed onesie, and having her bundle me attached to the carseat or is the bundle me too suffocating for a newborn? If not, then hat, footed onesie, and a fleece snowsuit I guess you could call it?

Thanks in advance guys!

Re: What's baby coming home in?

  • My boys have always just come home in a sleep and play and hat. If it's cold or raining/windy, I throw a blanket on them in the carseat. Baby is only ever outside long enough to get from the hospital to the car, and from the car to the house. The only time I ever really used a bundle me (shower cap style!) was when going on walks as it made my boys sweat so much when in the car or in stores.

  • Thanks! I was thinking she may be too hot in the car with the bundle me.

  • I'm in NYC too but mine is due next week--she will most likely be late though according to my doctor. I have a cotton footie onesie and a warmer fleece onesie and a cotton hat. You never know with the end of October. We may get another freak snow storm!
  • I'm in the NYC area, being induced 10/16, and will not be putting LO in bunting or a snowsuit of any sort.

  • I am on MD and not due till 10/31. The end of October can go either way. My dd#1 was born at the end of May which also can go either way. We took her home in a long sleeve onesie and had a blanket on hand in case it was cold. We will probably do the same with this one. Like pp said, they are outside for so little time I wouldn't dress them in anything heavy they could potentially get over heated in.

  • I planned to bring her home in a cute outfit. I brought the smallest one I had since she was 3 weeks early. It didn't fit her, so we brought her home in the outfit they put her in in the hospital.

  • Snowsuit shouldn't be used in the car seat. Neither should heavy coats, because the clothing can compress in an accident, and the seat straps are less secure because you have to make them loose enough to fasten them around the bulky clothes.

When you need to bundle baby in coats and snow gear, you should bring it with you and plan to dress baby in that stuff once you arrive.

Our LO will be in a longsleeve footie outfit and a hat, and we'll have a few blankets of different thicknesses in the car to choose from, or layer if necessary, to cover him with. :)

  • We've always done weather appropriate outfit and a blanket if needed for extra warmth. No bunting outfit/snowsuit/thick coat in a car seat ever. They're not safe.

My youngest son was born nov 30 in illinois and the day we brough him home ended up being 70 degrees (it was mid thirties the day I went into the hospital 3 days earlier)

This lo is in a onesie and pair of pants with blankets for added warmth. We're going home today and it's still fairly warm out but blankets are always something to keep with just in case

  • OP - are you taking a cab or do you have a car? We're in Manhattan too and about 30 blocks from hospital. Hoping to have a family members car but curious about cab situation.
  • I envy your weather up north right now!!! I always have NYC weather on my phone from visiting last year and compare with Dallas tx weather. This week out weather is getting hotter! 93 for a high most days! Yuck! But on the other hand we southerners do NOT react well to anything white falling from the sky :) I bought one cute onesie to bring baby boy home in. Hopefully when that day arrives it's not still in the 90's in TX!
  • Nope.  My mental response was clothes and a car seat.   Like basically every other PP said we have a newborn outfit and a 0-3 month outfit.  We'll use blankets over her if it's cold.
We are so excited to grow our family!

  • I'm taking footed pajamas in preemie and newborn sizes and an extra onesie just in case. A blanket if it's chilly. My daughter was full term but teeny tiny, and the NB outfit we took was a bust. Hoping one of the three fits this time :)
  • She will be coming home in a gap fleece one piece.
  • Depends on what we have! I have a boy outfit and a girl outfit picked out. Both are the same, onsie with a little sweater and footie pants.
  • We did a onesie, footed pants, and a hat with a blanket because it was around 65 degrees out. Don't overthink this too much.
