Pregnant after a Loss

Tracking hcg when PGAL & US timing SECOND UPDATE!!

Sorry if this is long-winded....This may seem like a stupid question but because I have just changed OBs and this is my first pregnancy after my loss.

I got my BFP on Friday and called the new OB on Monday. They told me to come in Tuesday to have my hcg levels drawn. I was exactly 4 weeks ( I was tracking my O). My level came back at 207. They asked me to come back in today for another draw. I will find out the results in the am. I am so nervous and I'm sure you can all relate.

My question is this: How many times did you have a draw before you were seen? All the nurse would say is that the dr would assess it after the results of the second draw and given the history of a missed miscarriage they'd get me in for an early ultrasound. I know levels can vary greatly but they look for the doubling of betas every 48-72 hours.

With my loss I had my first appointment at 9 weeks and they started the appointment off with an ultrasound. Because I was measuring 6w they wanted me to wait a week and come back hoping my dates were off and they'd see a heartbeat at the follow up. Because it was so traumatic I had to request an interim beta count so that I knew prior to the follow up US. My levels dropped so it was apparent and they did the US just to triple check there was no growth or heartbeat.

Having gone through that this is my second question: am I stupid for not wanting an US prior to 7w? I feel like until I see a heartbeat there's no point in "waiting to see if everything develops". Again sorry for the novel but my head is spinning.

**UPDATE**
My levels went from 207 to 496 so I can breathe a sigh of relief for now. They want to do another draw next Thursday (5w 2 or 3d) and then schedule an early ultrasound. They said that they'll do that whenever I'm comfortable. I think it will be a game time decision once I get next week's betas. Thanks again ladies for sharing & for the support.

**SECOND UPDATE**
Just got the results of my third beta drawn yesterday 5w 2 or 3d & they're at 11,406! They asked if I wanted to come in today for an early ultrasound but I want my husband there & that wasn't possible. I opted to wait until next Wednesday which would put me at the 6 week mark and it was also a morning that I could have a sitter for my son. God forbid this scan doesn't go well I don't want to fall to pieces in front of him. I thought I was nervous making these calls for the beta numbers I can't imagine how I'll feel walking in for the scan. Deep breaths and positive vibes I guess.

Re: Tracking hcg when PGAL & US timing SECOND UPDATE!!

  • I had my first u/s at just under 5 weeks which was my first appointment. They usually track your betas to make sure they are doubling. It was helpful to have the u/s that early because I did see a sac in my uterus which meant something was there and it was in my uterus, not ectopic. This time they only took my betas 3 times because they doubled each time. I did see a heartbeat this time around at just over 6 weeks, which is early but again made me feel better since all of my other pregnancies I didn't hear a heartbeat. If they are willing to do it early I would go for it. Congratulations and good luck!

  • @Denise91980‌ for sharing. That makes sense. I really hope they've doubled. I'll post an update tomorrow. Hopefully I don't pass out when I see the office number flash across my phone :(
  • Congrats and great first numbers by the way;).. If your numbers keep doubling and they get you in a week or so you will probably see and know something even at an early U/S! Good luck:)

  • I didn't have any betas drawn - I could have requested them but I thought they would give me something to worry about - I really concentrated on the PGAL mantras to get me through.

As far as the u/s, I don't think you are stupid for wanting to wait until 7 weeks (I also don't think you are stupid if you want to go in earlier - it's a personal decision).  I was shocked when my OB offered me an u/s at my 7 week appointment - with my first pregnancy, I was to wait until the NT scan at 12ish weeks.  I, of course, jumped at the chance but don't know what I would have done if I had been earlier.

  • Thank you so much ladies for your input. It means a lot. The combination of a new practice and this being my first pregnancy since my loss is making me super nervous. My head is all over the place. I should know the second beta results in a couple of hours. Now to just keep busy until then....
  • Congrats on a great first number! I had two betas drawn. Once we knew they were doubling like they should we stopped. My OB tried to book me for an u/s late in my 5th week, but I pushed it back a week until mid 6th week. My last pg was a mmc and we never saw a heartbeat so I didn't want to risk going in for a scan before the hb started. I wasn't sure I could handle another u/s without a hb, even if it was for different reasons. Good luck and do what makes you most comfortable!

  • First, ((( hugs ))) to you. This is hard.

I had two blood draws 48hrs apart. The first one was to check progesterone, but the lab also mistakenly gave an HCG report, so the OB/MWs office gave me the option to do the doubling numbers check. That came back fine, so they "released" me until my 8wk ultrasound and check-up.

I don't think you're stupid for wanting to wait. Even if my practice didn't "make me wait" so to speak, I'd choose the later date myself.

  • Another question- how often did your OBs do ultrasounds following a loss?
  • Best of luck with your ultrasound! I know how you feel about wanting to see those betas first. I've had two recent losses and will have my u/s next weds, I should be at 7weeks. My betas was were drawn once way back at 3-4 weeks and I don't like the fact that they haven't been checked since and I have to just brave the u/s blind not knowing what to expect. So nervous. My thoughts are with you! Best of luck. :)
  • @Loanne01‌ I'm sorry they didn't check them since then. I changed practices & before I had to demand it they offered given that my m/c was a missed m/c. Hopefully Wednesday brings is great luck. Please keep me updated!
