Congrats on all your babies! I have a question for you about your early ultrasounds.
After two years of trying we successfully got pregnant via IVF. Two embryos were transferred. I will be nine weeks on Friday. We had our first ultrasound (transvaginal) at just over 7 weeks and were told there was only one. I was a little sad but also a bit relieved to find out there was only one. I have been trying to settle my mind to it, but can't shake the feeling that they both took and one wasn't visible.
Was anyone here told they had just one and found out later there were in fact more? Was it completely obvious that there were two (or more) right from your first early ultrasound? It seems so unlikely in this day and age that they would miss something like that, but they are just so tiny in those early weeks. I will of course be happy with a healthy pregnancy regardless of number, I'm just curious if it still happens even with today's advanced medical tools.
Same here-- 2 sacs and 2 heartbeats on u/s at 6wks2d.

Ours were obvious, too, at 7w. Knowing the possibility of twins, I am sure your dr or u/s tech was looking for a second (unlike a spontaneous twin pregnancy that might get overlooked.) I hope you have a healthy, happy pregnancy either way. Congrats on your miracle (or miracles if you find that one is indeed hiding. )

I agree with this - I imagine with IVF your doctor is looking to make sure. They didn't see twins in our first U/S (transvaginal) and almost missed them in our second (also transvaginal) (we were all done and about to finish up after about 3 minutes of measuring etc., when the doctor was removing the wand it "swiped over" a second baby). Ours were di/di but were not the result of fertility treatments.
F15 January Siggy Challenge: What I'm Looking Forward to After the Babies Arrive Bringing them both home...UPDATE...The girls are home!!! 1/7/15 after 20 days in the NICU!
They were obvious at 7w and change. The tech spotted them immediately, lifted up the wand and said to me, "did you see that?" They're spontaneous so I had no idea where she was going w that statement. She then continues "I think there are two of them. And they both have heartbeats." And then I almost fell off the table.
Long story short though, it took her 10 seconds to find 2.
We didn't have our 1st ultrasound until 9 weeks but the second she put the wand on my belly I saw a line. She immediately took it away and started asking me questions about if it was my first pregnancy or if we did IVF (ours were spontaneous di/di) and when she put it back on, it was very clear that there were two in separate sacs. Could happen though! Congrats on your pregnancy!!
I'm the outlier here. Ours were IVF as well and at our 6 week appt they saw and measured one and saw another "something". At our 7 week appt they saw one heartbeat but decided to measure both sacs. At our 8 week we saw both heartbeats so it was clearly 2 babies. I was so convinced we were going to lose one but they are happy, healthy 6 month olds now. All that being said, they saw at least 2 "something's" at every appt they just couldn't confirm them both as babies at the early scans.
My boys were very visable at 6w2d- and with heartbeats. We transferred 2 and saw two obviously di-di twins, but my RE said "Oh but lets make sure there aren't anymore hiding." I loudly said " Yes lets."
I think that if you done any type of ART, the ultra sound techs/REs look very hard to make sure they have an accurate ultrasound. And most have two done before you get sent to OB- so if a complete ultrasound (that they are looking at the possibility of multiples since ART was used) by 9 weeks doesn't show twins, then no it isn't twins.
Same as above: spontaneous di/di found at 7w. I can only imagine if they had transferred 2, they would have made extra sure no one was hiding in there!

So I am the outlier here. I had my first u/s at 5 weeks due to bleeding. I don't think the tech who did the ultrasound knew it was an IVF pregnancy. She saw one sac and one yolk sac and called it a day. I had a beta drawn that day that was >10,000. I know betas can't diagnose a twin pregnancy, but it was so far out of the normal range for a singleton, it didn't really make sense. I went back a week later and there were clearly 2 sacs with 2 embryos and 2 heartbeats.

I also did IVF and my first US showed 2 sacs. My second US at 6wk 5d showed 2 babies each with a nice strong heart beat. We had a scare and ended up in the ED at 7wk 1d and had another US which showed larger babies with still strong heart beats (and thank goodness everything was ok). I'm sorry that both of your embryos didn't take. We actually had 3 transferred so one of ours didn't either. hang in there and take care of yourself and the little sticky bean you have in there!!!
Yes obvious at 7 weeks..I'm 29 weeks and it's been a rough ride!two babies twice the complications..everything happens for a reason!dont let this damper your excitement about being pregnant.
My very first ultrasound was at just around 4 to 5 weeks (I had been having very irregular cycles, so my doctor wanted me to come in for a scan immediately when I called to say I had a positive at home) - we didn't see anything at that time except for a slight lump at implantation. My second ultrasound we found two sacs and two poles - one measuring 6w 4d and the other measuring 6w 2d. It took a little while to find Baby A's heartbeat because his sac was hidden behind B's, but they both had strong heartbeats, and it was very obvious that there were two sacs. I could see it being less obvious with mo/mo twins, but with di/di it's very obvious. It would take a lot of overlap to hide the separate sacs that early on.

I had an IUI. My first u/s was around 5w2d and two sacs were obvious (di/di twins). Can't remember if it was at 6w or 7w when we saw the heartbeats.

Had an early u/s today, dated at 6w3d, 2 sacs clearly visible but only one heartbeat, the tech seems to think #2 didn't take DH was certain it was going to be twins even though not sure how... I guess I'll find out for certain at our 12w u/s, kinda hoping the tech was wrong.
I had IVF and at my first ultrasound, there were two sacs plus my beta was 2061 at 14days past transfer so I had an idea that perhaps the 2 embryos stuck before going into ultrasound. I looked at betabase site online which might not be accurate but 2061 was in twins category at 14 days so it was correct for me. I didn't hear heartbeats until a few ultrasounds later.
I had an US at 6wks after taking a home pregnancy test and OB only saw one baby ... I found out there were 2 at my 8wk Prenatal Check Up ... She apologized for having missed it. So yes it can happen ... Maybe it was hiding behind the other one and she couldn't detect 2 hearts at the 6wk check.
Ours were missed. At 8 weeks, there was only one baby measuring 4 days behind. Fast forward to 12 weeks. Surprise! There's two! Both measuring right on target. Ours are Di-Di. Very odd we missed the second one. I watched that screen like a hawk! Ours are natural.
I had my first ultrasound at 8 1/2 weeks, and the tech told me it was twins within about 15 seconds of having the wand in there (transvaginal) This is not to say it isn't possible for one to be hiding, and I think it could depend on the type of ultrasound they do as well, whether or not they can see everything extremely clearly. Congrats and good luck!
