I have (I mean hate) the PISA!

edited September 2014 in Breastfeeding
Okay I officially hate my pump in style. everytime I pump with it, despite getting a replacement, my output is so much less than when I pump with my freestyle.

It wasn't that way when I first started pumping but I think somehow my body has decided not to respond to the PISA anymore.

This morning i only got 2 ounces and then mid day I only got 3.5! I'll be lucky to get 10 today and yesterday I got 14 with my freestyle.

I think part of the problem is that i now need to crank the PISA to the max and I don't have to crank the freestyle up as much but then it hurts by the end of the 20 minutes.

I don't have any real question here (Unless you know how to fix it!) but just needed to vent.

P.S. I watch videos of the baby and look at pictures while i pump with the PISA. It doesn't seem to help.

Thanks for letting me vent!

  • Check the membranes and give your body time to adjust to the new pump. I wouldn't give up hope just yet. When I changed pumps it took a couple days before I was back up to normal output. This may be obvious but I also find looking at pics/watching videos of your LO while pumping increases output.

  • Thanks for the feedback! :yes brand new membranes and I actually use the PISA more often then the freestyle. (I use the PISA all but maybe 2 days a month). Could it be that I get more from the freestyle now BC I use it so rarely? Maybe my body got used to the PISA?

  • From the description on the PISA and Freestyle packaging, the Freestyle is considered "hospital grade" suction, while the PISA is not. That might be the difference.

  • Thanks RachelCA29! Where did you see it described as hospital grade suction? That's intriguing!

It is on the box of my PISA, there is a comparison chart of all the pumps and on of the things is "hospital grade suction" or something like that, and only the Freestyle has a check mark for that.

I EP'd up until last week and used the PISA and it was fine, although when I had my hospital rental (symphony) I didn't have to pump as long.

  • That's really good to know! Thank you!!

If i can't get my output back up on the PISA i  might switch back to the freestyle as my primary.

They each have their pros and cons but output is my top priority! :) Thanks!!

Fascinating - I used a Freestyle, and liked ("liked") it, but I didn't find it to be AS hospital-grade as the Symphony, but I'm really interested to hear this.

  • I checked their website and while I couldn't find that listed under the freestyle description, one of the charts did say that the freestyle was good for "low supply" and the PISA did not. Definitely interesting!!

I'm not ready to switch to the freestyle completely because i like having it in my car and at home (I leave my PISA at the office) but if my supply drops anymore than it already has, I will definitely switch! I do get more with the freestyle lately.

    Thanks for pointing it out!

I'm in Canada so we have different packaging, maybe they just worded it differently here? But I figure for the price difference the strength in pump makes sense.

  • I hate my PISA too. I don't get as much out and because I was nervous about supply when I went back to work, I rented a Symphony for a month. Next week marks my 3rd week using it, and I'll slowly try to go back to the PISA. If it affects my supply, I'll be renting the symphony another month. I need the extra suction and don't want to pump 50 times a day!
