  • I also don't have much of an appetite these days.  I mainly eat because I have to and not because anything tastes particularly good.  DH is doing most of the meal planning but we don't want to do too much of that in case Schroeder arrives a bit early.

Numbers have been mostly good for the last few weeks.  A few random high fastings, but even those have been under 100 so I doubt they are going to change my meds at this point.

I keep trying to wrap stuff up for work but my manager keeps adding tasks.  He is very much aware of the fact that I am now down to 9 working days left (assuming I make it until mat leaves starts).  At least most of the tasks aren't too big and can be accomplished without too much hassle.

  • Hello! I was pre-diabetic before being prego but am now just considered type 2. Been that way since week 11, started insulin at about 16 weeks and am now at 34. I had GD with my first diagnosed at 27 weeks so I thought going through this for 6 months would be torture. It wasn't bad at first really but now I'm feeling like I did with my first.... Never satisfied! I'm always hungry to where my stomach rumbles an hour after I eat. My doc says more protein but I'm not a big meat eater. And another rant, my copay for insulin just went up $20 from $70 to $90 and I take two different kinds. Part of me wants to enjoy these last few weeks of quietness and interrupted sleep but the other part just can't wait until the insulin and cravings are done!

  • My MFM looked at my numbers and said there's a possibility my placenta is starting to poop out, which sucks since I'm almost 36 weeks.  We will get a better idea at my growth ultrasound last week, but I am hoping it still has 3 weeks left in it to get me to my induction.

When is your induction again? And can they physically check the health of your placenta via ultrasound? (Is that possible?) The reason I bring it up is that another T1 group I'm in had a discussion about insulin needs dropping around 33-37 weeks and it has nothing to do with the placenta. It's apparently, according to them, normal. But it freaks a lot of docs out and they generally push their patients to early deliveries just based on insulin needs alone. Something to consider.
    @starla487

From what I understand they use a combination of factors as a proxy for placenta function since it can't actually be ascertained via ultrasound.  I have an induction scheduled for 39 weeks, and he would not induce earlier than that unless there was some sort of bleed or issue with the baby.  He wasn't freaked out by the numbers, he just said that it sometimes is a reflection of a placenta beginning to poop out.  he said if numbers are truly dropping he works with the endo to adjust insulin requirements.

I'm certainly no expert, but I think at least in GD, if the disease is truly due to hormones being secreted by the placenta, it's counter intuitive to say that it's normal for insulin resistance to decrease during a time where the placenta is actually secreting a greater amount of hormone.  I'm not sure if it differs in T1 because of the mechanism of disease, but if GD is truly a function of placenta secreted hormones, unless hormone secretion is decreasing for a completely benign and normal reason, it would be a function of placental function.

ETA: I should add that I asked him the question when he was looking at the numbers, he was all about "excellent control". ;)

  • My numbers are erratic again this week (week 37!). One of my OBs asked me why yesterday, and my answer was: "You're the doctor. Can't you tell me?" Apparently he could not. But I have one week and one day to go until my induction, and The Boy is measuring 6lbs 10oz and is super active, so I'm not sweating it at this point.

QOTW: My productivity is variable. I have a little left for work, but I think that's only because the end is in sight and I really don't have too much left to wrap up. I've been much more productive at home, getting things in the nursery sorted out and finishing up my shopping.

  • My diet is ok, but I want to eat everything I can see.  Especially the limited edition oreos.

My productivity is low.  I just don't care anymore.  I'm not interested in cleaning at home, I'm not interested in my assignments at work.  I want to sleep.

  • @MrsL2B Just curious, is there a reason why you are being induced at 39 weeks? I thought they only induce if the baby seems to be big? I was measured last week at 33 1/2 weeks and he was 4lbs 12 oz which they said was on track so I was thinking if he stays that way they wouldn't  unless I went over my due date? But I'm guessing not. I have a doc appt tomorrow and I am going to ask. I was planning on working up until my dd unless of course I go into labor myself. But if there is a reason they normally plan a week earlier I will need to change my plans.

I WISH I was like you ladies and didn't have an appetite! I feel like I'm constantly being tortured even by pictures of food, and they are everywhere...

@poca1313‌ It's still standard for many practices to induce their patients with preexisting diabetes and/or those who need insulin a little early. I will be on IV insulin and glucose during labor to keep my blood sugar stable, so therefore they want me there as soon as possible to keep that monitored and under control. This is mostly for the sake of the baby's blood sugar level at birth. The other big concern is that the placenta can degrade sooner than 40 weeks in those with long-term diabetes.

I'm not that thrilled about induction, but obviously I wasn't bothered by it enough to switch providers. Plus my practice has assured me that they will start with the lowest doses of the synthetic hormones possible and only increase the dosage if and when I say I'm ready, so I'm comfortable with their approach.

If your OB will let you go to 40 weeks, that's great!

ETA: Also, I got to look at the on call sheet for my OB practice and picked a time when the docs I like the best will be at the hospital.

And here is some light reading on l&d practices for preexisting and gestational diabetics. https://www.glowm.com/section_view/heading/Diagnosis and Management of Diabetes Mellitus in Pregnancy/item/162

Diet has been going well.  Been getting high readings today but a dinner at a fancy steak house will do that to a girl!

I have found lots of snacks that have a great balance of carbs/proteins that are prepackaged so that has helped a great deal.

I have cheated a bit more in the last couple of weeks.  I had 3 cookies this weekend and blueberry cheesecake last night.  I did eat a good deal of protein to help balance them out but what satisfaction it was.

I am 39 weeks tomorrow and I am waiting to hear from my OB on when they plan on inducing me.

QOTW:       Is anyone being productive these days (either at work or at home)?   I have been productive at work.  One my replacements started last week and it is so weird to keep handing my work off.  So now my desk is so clean and pretty!  Just a few random things to tackle so I am feeling like huge progress has been made.

I am keeping up at home but it could use a deep cleaning and honestly I do not have the inclination to do that.  But dishes and laundry are done so I am calling that a win!

  • @MrsL2B Thanks for that info. I was not aware of that but will definitely discuss that with my OB tomorrow to see if that is their standard practice. I won't be upset about it if they do but just would like to be prepared with work and everything, they just have never mentioned that to me. I only had GD with my first and never needed meds so I didn't go through half the stuff I'm going through now with this one. This is all new to me!

  • @Irobi13 do you mind sharing your protein snacks? I'm always looking for new ideas besides the obvious. I eat greek yogurt, tired of cheese sticks, nuts but they are expensive, cottage cheese but has lots of sodium. And the obvious meat but I'm not a big meat eater, especially lean meats like we are suppose to eat.

Because I'm always hungry I find myself cheating at times too. Yesterday at Arbys (closest place to where my car was being worked on) I ate my lunch and went back for a 2nd helping of jalapeno poppers (which I justified as being better than the milk shake I REALLY wanted). Then sunday morning I made cinnamon rolls for my family. Managed to only eat one but proceeded to eat the left over icing out of the container and any that fell off the buns onto the pan.

  • @poca1313...my snacks are not the most cost effective. I have been buying Luna Protein bars (19g carbs, 12g protein) and Nut-ration Peanut mixes by Planters (19g carbs, 10g protein).

I have been "splurging" on them (boxes of each run close to $7) but they are so portable and easy.

Interesting. I must research this further; it was the first I'd heard of it and of course, nothing was cited. I mean, my basal rates throughout the day have been lowered significantly since 32 weeks, but only to offset my massive insulin needs for meals. Basically, the dose I give at breakfast can carry me through until lunch. So I wouldn't say it's my placenta's fault per se. But you've always had kick ass blood sugars, GDF. At least the ones I've seen you report here. It's hard to imagine them getting any better than they already are.
I was wondering if the Humulin is somehow motivating my pancreas to produce more insulin during the day, or if the pharmacokinetics are a bit extended in me for some reason so it's carrying me through more of the day, but my MFM shot down all my biochemical arguments and we ended up drawing a bunch of different graphs and having a rather heated debate about pk/pd lol

I just sent my numbers over to my nutritionist and she wants me to start adding an additional serving of carbs to each meal.  I feel weird doing this because I'm already sort of cheating (pumpkin muffin and PSL for a snack today and was still 80 after lunch), though I've been told that if the numbers are normal, it's not really cheating.......

  • @MRSclarke08 Please feel free! I realize there are other reasons besides GD or in my case Type II that one might be induced which is why I asked. I just wanted to see if that was strictly the reason or if there were other factors. And if it was strictly the reason, what other reasons besides baby size would that be? I am right on the edge age wise, had it been a few more months it would have been added to my risk factors too.

I am definitely going to bring this up tomorrow and ask. It seems most things they are on top of informing me of so I would think this would be important enough they would have brought up to me by now if it were the case. On the other hand there are things I have to ask, like when they test for Strep b... oh that is your next visit! Had I not asked or been a BTDT mom, I would have had a little surprise for tomorrow... :-/

  • So when they say that you no longer have GD "as soon as the baby is born", do they mean literally like the second the baby is born?  I'm just wondering how much monitoring I will need to continue to do while in the hospital and once I get home.

@NavyFlyer - I am so jealous and can't wait to be diet free too.

@DreadGamerWife - I have my days where I don't feel like eating either, but I know I have to because of the sugar.  Part of it is due to some nausea and part of it is I don't want to figure out what I can eat and I'm tired of the stuff that I have been eating.

I would probably do just about anything for a box of fresh Krispy Kreme donuts.

Productivity - I had last week off for Fall Break and did not get much of my to-do list accomplished.  Hospital bag is almost finished with all of my stuff, but none of my husband's things are in there (I'm such an over-packer).  I got all of the baby stuff cleaned and put away, but I still have two more showers. I wanted to do a very thorough housecleaning, but I think keeping up with laundry, cooking, and dishes is about as good as it is going to get (especially with my elephant sized swollen feet as my husband calls them). I spent all day Sunday working on lesson plans for my long term sub and only got one out of three classes finished.  I am so worried that I will deliver early so all of my work will be for nothing because it's based on where my class should be three weeks from now.
  • @cmcookaln‌ DH already has a list of foods to get after I deliver. Krispy Kremes are at the top of that list! In fact, he has already mapped out the easiest route from the hospital.

  • Check In: I have been doing much better this week with my diet although I constantly feel hungry. I have forgotten to test a few times after an hour and I forgot to take the insulin twice this week. The thing that gets me is that my morning numbers have been consistent whether I took the insulin or not.

QOTW: I am not productive at all anywhere. I just can't wait to meet her! 10 more days of work (15 days 'til my scheduled csection or induction!!!)

    Me- 36 DH- 40 ***TTC since 1/13

    BFP #1 - 4/3/13 *** EDD 12/13/13 ***M/C 4/12/13 @5wks 1 day

  • @cmcookain yes. After I gave birth with Dd#1 and had GD they tested my sugar right after and handed me a sprite (and I remember it being the best sprite I ever had in my life! Lol). Also I did ask my doc about induction. She said they could very well and do often with pre-existing but I won't know until my 38 week checkup. If they check and I am dilated in any way they will. Otherwise unless there are other reasons they will not. I already know it will be unpredictable but I was planning on working up to my edd. It's just frustrating now knowing there's an even bigger chance it will be earlier.

  • @MRSclarke08‌ I am in the same boat as in I have a list of things that may cause induction (right now they are letting me go to 41 but monitoring), GD not being the only thing. Age is my favorite one. I nearly choked when I was just looking over my 'high risk' symptoms and they listed it as ELDERLY maternal age. 35 and I should be put out to pasture.
I was loving my high risk list - took a pic and sent it to my girlfriend saying 'thank god I am already knocked up - who would want to procreate with this!'

I had my shower yesterday - don't recommend a shower at 36w if you are allowing people to post pics of you to social media - and indulged in some pizza with salad. My blood sugar after an hour was 124. So had cake as a late night sack, 84 fasting. This GD is all over the place.
