Nervous about BFing again

My LO is coming a week from tomorrow via RCS!  I'm SO excited to meet her, but really nervous about BFing again.  The first time around, it was very painful at first and then I had recurrent mastitis.  I made it a little over 6 months, which was a huge accomplishment for me!  I'd like to make it that long again, but I'm just nervous. One good thing is that my hospital now has full time LC's, which they did not have when my first child was born, so I didn't have help from an LC until about a month after she was born.  I'm hoping that will make a big difference.

Anyway, what was your experience the second time around?  Easier? Harder? About the same?

Re: Nervous about BFing again

  • It's been night and day for us! I was scared too. With my first I had a nipple shield (flat nipples), extreme pain, oversupply (pretty sure caused by over pumping since he couldn't latch due to tongue tie), mastitis, plugged ducts, etc, etc. I cried every time I nursed for the first 6 weeks.

With this guy, we're not even 2 weeks in and he's been latching great, my supply regulated after just a few days, I have very little pain after the initial latch, babe is happy and gaining, and I'm feeling super confident about it all!

I think what has really made the difference is that guy #1 made my nipples less flat, I know what I'm doing, and I'm confident enough to make my own decisions (I refused to pump this time despite pressure in the hospital).

I think seeing an LC will make a HUGE difference for you! If you have pain this time be sure to ask her to check LO for a tongue tie. Very best of luck!!

  • My second time was much easier. No pain at all even though it had been 7 months since I'd breastfed. The baby was just better at it-- he opened his mouth wider than the first. Regardless, at least one of you will have experience this time.

  • Second time was much easier here too. Only made it part-time time and six weeks with baby one. Still going strong at nearly 16 months with baby two. Like @TheBorg7of9‌ said, you'll have experience this time. Knowing what to expect both from breastfeeding and also just from having a newborn in general, made all the difference for me!

  • Second time much easier because also you know what to expect! I had a great LC that helped me with latch and i used silverette silver cups since my first BF session in the hospital and was like night and day ... No more pain! Good luck!
