Re: GD check-in 9/22

  • 1. How far along are you?
    28w6d.
    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
No appointments this week, thankfully. I had three last week (dermatologist, regular OB, MFM). I found out last week my OB has cancer, so I'll be meeting my new sub OB next week at my 30 week appointment. I have no idea who will wind up delivering Baby Q at this point.
    3. How are you feeling in general?
I'm doing ok. Tired, sore, insomnia...Yup, welcome to the third trimester.
    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
I started glyburide this week because my fasting numbers just wouldn't go down. I was on these meds with both the girls, so this is not unexpected. I'll have to see how it affects my appetite (for good or bad).
GTKY: Have you scared yourself silly doing too much Dr. Googling about GD?
Not this pregnancy, because I've been doing the GD diet off and on for the past 8 years, and I've already gone through this twice. I have done some research on type II vs GD moms, though, since I'm technically type II this pregnancy. I was worried a couple of months ago about LO's growth being too much because I found some studies online about AC measurements during growth scans, but my MFM said we're in the perfect size range.

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? Not yet, just sent my first week of glucose readings in this AM, so I may be back later today with an updated answer....

    3. How are you feeling in general? Overall still feeling pretty good, but I can feel the fatigue is increasing . I found that "low-sugar" ice cream isn't nearly as bad as it sounds.  Went to grocery shop for the ingredients for a knock-off sugar-free/splenda based pumpkin spice syrup.  Came home with everything but... #pregnancybrainatitsfinest

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? My morning fasting numbers are still consistantly above target.  (supposed to be <90, usually running between 100-110).  Still waiting for them to call me with feedback

GTKY: Have you scared yourself silly doing too much Dr. Googling about GD? Screw google - I much prefer to ask internet strangers about my serious medical issues  :D

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? I actually am not diagnosed with GD yet, but I failed the 1 hour and have to take the 3hr this week. I think I'm going to do it tomorrow morning.

    3. How are you feeling in general? ok -- I'm sore today but that's because I spent all day yesterday tailgating at the Buffalo Bills game.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? I failed the 1 hr with a 160something. They just called to give me the results.

GTKY: Have you scared yourself silly doing too much Dr. Googling about GD? Not yet!

Question: any advice as to what to eat for dinner tonight before the 3 hr? Just eat normally?

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? Growth US on Wednesday, regular OB appt next week.  Haven't had a non-stress test yet, but I think they'll start soon.

    3. How are you feeling in general?
I feel really good.  I had insomnia on Saturday night, but it had it's plusses.  I found out my little girl is a night owl.  She was kicking away at around 4am and I actually felt her with my hand for the first time!
    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
My numbers were all wonky, so my MFM doc adjusted my Glyburide once again.  I'm finally getting the numbers under control.  I hope I can stay consistent.
GTKY: Have you scared yourself silly doing too much Dr. Googling about GD? Actually, the opposite.  Everything I see says "big baby, possible hypoglycemia at birth, etc."  While these are not things I want, they do not super-alarm me.  Also, big babies tend to run in my family.  (My brother was 6 weeks premature and still 7+ lbs).  I'd be surprised if this little girl was under 8lbs.

  • @frenchy816 - I'd limit and/or avoid anything "white" (breads, pastas, and refined sugars).  Stick with some lean protein and high-fiber veggies (think black beans & sweet potato vs. white potato).  No fruit.  I'm assuming they told you to fast also - 8-12 hours?

But keep in mind, what you eat for dinner tonight will really only play a role on your fasting reading tomorrow.  Once you down the glucose drink there's not too much you can do - your body is going to process it the way its going to process it.  If you are really scared of failing you could also use tonight as kind of your "last supper" and EAT ALL THE CARBS! LOL  O:-)

Will keep fingers crossed for you!

I generally did this with both tests during my previous pregnancies, and I passed the fasting with DD1 and failed with DD2. And, with DD2, that's when my fasting numbers started getting wonky anyway. Something happened between DD1 and DD2 to make my fasting a problem.

So, yeah, your body is gonna do what it's gonna do, but I agree with clean eating as much as possible. Then you'll have a better baseline on how your body handles cleaner eating anyway.

I am SOOO incredibly thankful for this check in. I know everyone else is tired of all the GD questions so its so nice to be able to get this all out and receive some awesome advice! Thank you!!!

    1. How far along are you? 27wks2d

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? I am scheduled to go to the nutritionist this Thursday. They are sending me to a 2hr class?! Between my insurance still being so incredibly difficult and my H being OOT, I might call and either reschedule it or see if they can do a phone consultation instead. A 2hr class with both boys just isn't possible. I need to find a temporary babysitter or a daycare that allows drop offs.

    3. How are you feeling in general? I'm so tired and sore. In regards to GD, I feel like one minute I totally have this stuff figured out and the next minute have absolutely no clue what I am doing. My mom had GD with 4 of her pregnancies so I called her for some extra support today. Completely wrong thing to do. She pretty much told me eat whatever I want except starches, don't test as often as my Dr told me to and just make up a fasting number before 2nd and 3rd meal, and write whatever they want to hear on my food log as long as my numbers are good. Honestly I have been struggling trying to figure everything out and putting a lot of effort into trying to do things right so this kiddo and myself are healthy, to pretty much get "just screw it" from her hurt. Maybe I am taking things too seriously or whatever, but I just want to figure out exactly what the heck I am suppose to do before I slack off.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? So far my numbers have been pretty good. Occasionally a before meal number will be a couple points too high but I really think its because I suck at spacing out snacks and meals. I have had one number that was 13pts over, but I was on the phones with an insurance company that didn't want to cover anything and a pharmacy that told me they couldn't do anything so I am attributing that to stress especially since I was I was cussing my H out and bawling lol. I was also told I am eating too clean so I am trying to figure out a better balance without going over my 30carb per meal allowance. Just so ready to have this whole diet thing figured out which is why I am so frustrated with insurance and the long ass class.

GTKY: Have you scared yourself silly doing too much Dr. Googling about GD? I haven't googled a lot complications or whatever so no, haven't scared myself too silly lol! Mostly been googling recipes and diet stuff, which is frustrating because most of the carbs go over what my Dr gave me as a goal.

    ---QBF---

I just heard back from the dietician - they are giving me 1 more week to try and get my morning fasting #'s under control or else they will put me on meds (glyburide).  Basically I need to watch my portions at dinner, and make sure my evening snack is well balanced and comes off one of the pre-designed meal plans (for now - if that seems to help the numbers, then i can start playing around with substituting things I actually want to eat vs. told to eat).  DH checked the plan vs. what groceries we actually have on hand, and he said I have some options for at least the next day or 2.

My question to the more experienced ladies who were/are on meds - How did things change for you once you were put on meds?  They gave me a brief run-down at my consultation, and the nurse was so focused on always having glucose tabs handy because if on meds by blood sugars would start dropping too low!  So now I'm especially wary since my other readings all fall into range, will they be lowered also? I'm sure she just wanted to give the worst-case scenarios - any real-life experiences?  If its just the AM readings that need help, do they only dose you to take the med at night before bed?  Does anyone else just want a ginormous hot fudge spite-filled sundae right now?
  • 1. How far along are you? 25w6d

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? I go to the dr to go over my readings next Friday. Was supposed to be sooner, but he is going out of town.

    3. How are you feeling in general? I have been feeling fine. Only problem is I get hungry after meals and it's close to my 2 hr. After meal reading, so I don't want to screw that up.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? All of my numbers have been in range. (Knock on wood) So, I am hoping when I meet with my doctor that he will cut my reading down from 5 a day to like 3. I asked him about GD diet and he was adamant that it was wrong for me and to stay low carb. I need to grocery shop for more snack options. I plan out meals when I shop and realize once I'm home that snack time has been left out!

GTKY: Have you scared yourself silly doing too much Dr. Googling about GD?

totally!! I just want to make sure I do everything right. My thing right now is that I read if you squeeze your finger for blood it will give you false readings. So I am trying not to squeeze, but I have to milk my finger to get anything. The instructions say to milk it, but studies say squeezing leads to false low scores. Should I get a bigger gage lancet? Oh well!

@BdblZ I was on 2.5mg glyburide with both girls, and that's what I just started this past week. I had a few crashes with the girls, but usually it was when I was out and about in the heat. Just keep some candy with you (I use the Whole Foods bulk jelly beans because they are TASTY) and a portable snack.

Usually the meds lower all your numbers, but it tends to run out around 16 hours after you take it. My fasting numbers are too high and some of my dinner numbers were borderline, so they have me take it with dinner. So far, all my numbers have been fine except when I know I ate too many carbs at dinner.

In terms of doctor appointments, at 32 weeks I have to start weekly nonstress tests (NST) and biophysical profiles (BPP) to make sure the baby is growing and moving normally. Those were the biggest PITAs, because DD1 kept me on the machines so long for the NSTs. I am legendary in the office, apparently, and when I came in 20 months later with DD2, I literally had two techs look and me and say, "Oh no!" :D

@Emilysan16‌ I talked to my nutritionist about low carb vs GD diet because I'm gluten free and it's hard to find GF alternatives that don't use a lot of rice/corn/potato starch and spike my sugars. She said if I want to do more paleo/low carb that's fine, as long as I'm eating enough.

Yeah, I've heard that about the squeezing vs milking. I usually do the milking, but sometimes it's hard not to squeeze. Sometimes I find just adjusting the depth setting or pressing the lancet plunger thingie into my finger a bit more is enough to get a good sample. I'm just worried about callouses, having already been testing for 5 months. Just make sure you rotate your fingers and sides of your fingers to prevent callouses.

@Anna930‌ Of course you're welcome! :D Glad to see you joining us.

@kdm06c‌ It's nice to have a place to vent about stuff without worrying about bothering everyone else. This is just our special pregnancy place. :D And yeah, you seem to have the strictest diet out of all of us right now, so you might want to look into some paleo recipes. Since paleo calls for no grains or dairy, you can pretty much cut out all carbs but fruit. A lot of nut replacements for flours and milks, so since we don't have to count nuts, it's a win (as long as the milks aren't sweetened).

I need to find my paleo chocolate pudding recipe. It uses 100% cocoa chocolate, canned coconut milk, eggs, and ground up dates (yes, it's sugar, but it's also fruit and you get to count off the fiber content). It's really good, and I couldn't tell the difference between it and regular chocolate pudding, honestly.

  • @bowlwoman‌ I am really confused as to why they have me on such a strict diet after talking to you ladies. I thought maybe I just misunderstood her so I went on check the notes she left on my patient web portal and I wasn't mistaken. This Friday I have to give them my logs and since my numbers have been pretty good I'm hoping they might change it. I also have my follow up on the 1st and I plan on asking about it then.

Going to check out some paleo recipes tonight. Thanks! And I will definitely be googling paleo chocolate pudding because, um. Yum!

  • @kdm06c‌ I was Paleo for a while. Stopped bc of my work schedule April- now. There were lots of really tasty dishes I found. My only issue was that the ones I liked take some time to prep/cook and in the summer I only have time for grill a meat/cook a veggie for dinner. I'm going back into it next week. There is a paleo lasagna that I LOVE. (Again, prep time is not quick). I also have a slow cooker turkey meatball recipe that is great bc the meatballs are chock full of tons of veggies. I'm one of those people that when they start a new diet they buy lots of cookbooks. So, if you are looking for a specific dish, let me know and I am sure I can find something!

    Ok, I just made this:

It uses 2 Tbsp of honey, which makes the whole cup about 30g of carbs. It's not very sweet at all, which is why I don't know if I could cut the honey down to 1 Tbsp so I can have the whole recipe with a cup of milk for a bedtime snack.  I guess I could eat half of it if I wanted milk, but I'd like to see if I can figure out a way to eat the whole thing with milk too. :D

I also added 1 Tbsp of butter, which I think helped the consistency.

With nuts and eggs making up the bulk of the content, this is a good way to get some healthy protein into a snack. :) Plus, it's friggin' chocolate cake!

  • I did a Whole30 paleo challenge two years ago where I cut out all processed foods, grains, beans, sugars/sweetners, and alcohol for 30 days. It was difficult, but I did it. I ate a lot of salads with grilled meats and nuts/seeds, and lots of almond meal/coconut flour alternatives for breadings and thickeners.

I've been craving chicken parm for a few days, so I may make that tomorrow with almond meal and zucchini noodles. I can make GF pasta for the girls.

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? Growth ultrasound today.  Baby's measuring two weeks ahead and over 3.5 lbs.  Doctor was't concerned but not much seems to concern him. He doesn't trust the measurements but still recommends another growth scan in 4 weeks.  Following protocol I guess.
    3. How are you feeling in general? Still feeling good.  Having more contractions but nothing bothersome.  The doctor said (with a smile) to stay hydrated and empty my bladder often to help reduce the contractions.  It's ok, I don't really need to spend anytime at my desk getting work done throughout the day.
    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? Numbers have been great and I'm thankful for that.

  • @bowlwoman I saw you post on another thread about "cheating" more the day you started meds.  When I spoke to my dietician at 12 weeks I vented how restricted my diet was with my last pregnancy.  She said that if GD becomes that difficult to control on diet alone again in my third trimester that I should just go on meds so I had more freedom with my diet.  So it's expected women on meds will take more liberties with their diet....as they should to avoid crashes!

I totally agree. I've been on metformin for almost 10 years for the PCOS, except for when I'm pregnant. So, it makes sense that I need to be on some sort of meds now anyway.

I just hate it when I see the too high numbers, because it makes me feel like a bit of a failure. Even though I know I ate how and what I was supposed to. So, the "cheating" was also a bit of "So there, body. Now I can eat more what I want and my numbers will be fine. Nah nah." :D

@summersunshine916‌ If you're already doing that strict of a low-carb diet, then if you do have it you'd just have to monitor your numbers to see how it goes. Some doctors go straight to insulin, and some do glyburide first. It all depends on your doctor's protocol, training, education, etc.

ETA: SO not happy with my after dinner numbers. I had maybe 40g of carbs (I'm allowed 45-60g), and my afternoon snack was within limits as well. I forgot to take my meds until after I finished eating, but this is a meal I've had once a week for months with no problems. My reading was 144! WTF? HOW is that possible?

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
follow up fetal heart echo and first growth u/s. Here's hoping baby girl isn't huge.

    3. How are you feeling in general?
exhausted, sore and cranky. The trifecta lol. Tired of having to be so careful with my diet.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
Nope. I'm gaining more weight than I'd like so I'm watching my calorie intake carefully right now.

GTKY: Have you scared yourself silly doing too much Dr. Googling about GD?
Nah. Due to my profession, the fact I had GD with my DS and that I've been diabetic for two years now, I'm pretty familiar with the whole deal. Sadly.

  • @bowlwoman‌ I love zucchini "noodles". My husband has to have pasta every week. So, he gets regular and I have a zucchini. I used to make a fresh paleo sauce, but now I use a no sugar added sauce due to time. I am telling people at one of my jobs about the zucchini swap all the time. I know they rolled their eyes at the chunky girl talking about healthy food!
  • @emilysan16 - what do you use to make your zucchini noodles?  Did you buy one of those special kitchen tools?  I saw one at Bed, Bath, & Beyond, but it looked like it was just cheap plastic and would break before I got my moneys worth.
  • @BdblZ‌ I use a box grater on the large shred cheese side. I think it works pretty good.
  • I'm a day late I know I just got my diagnosis today :(

My regular OB visit is tomorrow and there we will talk about extra appointments and test and what not. I'm awaiting a call for the nutritionist for my appointment with them.

    3. How are you feeling in general?
Pretty tired but otherwise I'm pretty well accually

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
Been watching my liquid calories heavily  and trying to watch carbs since I failed my 1hour waiting to get my need to be number from the nutritionist.

Not really beig a nurse I already know more than I wish I did. But looking on the bright side that it can be managed.

  • I'd like to update my update from yesterday....my numbers are wonky! Eating the same dinner last night that I ate last week with no issues after 1 hour led to a high number even after 2 hours! I'm starting to recall the frustrations of the third trimester last pregnancy and why I wouldnt allow a speck of refined sugar to cross my lips for fear of harming my baby. I told myself I wouldnt stress so much this time. But between a baby measuring two weeks ahead on ultrasound and unexpectedly high numbers all in one day, I am falling back into my old mindset. Glad I have you ladies for support and understanding. And I just need to do as I say and remain calm and not stress over a couple high numbers.

@QueenOfSpades622 Welcome to the thread, and I'm sorry you have to join us. :) Just getting started to me is the hardest part, coming to grips with the changes you have to make, making sure you and the baby are healthy, etc. Totally worth it, though. And, I love your siggy pic. I'm Missouri born and bred, so my whole family has been Cardinals fans from way back. My cousin is a minor league pitcher who just got transferred from the Brewer's to Red's A team, so I guess we're now Reds fans? Blargh, though. Not a fan of Cincinnati.

@erien I had that same problem happen last night at dinner and this morning after breakfast. I've been stressed the past 24 hours, though, due to some contractions and pressure from baby last night and then a crappy-ass emotional morning, so I'm betting that has a lot to do with it. TMI time, but I also find that if I'm constipated, the system gets backed up and I don't digest my food as well. Food sitting in the stomach longer also leads to higher numbers, so that may be part of my problem as well. We'll see how my numbers do the rest of the week now that I've taken some Miralax.

  • @bowlwoman‌ you make two excellent points! Work and personal life have been stressful. That's probably also contributing to the increase in contractions. And I just started iron pills and still figuring out the appropriate dose of stool softeners and metamucil (and coffee). Thanks for the input.

  • Hi all I just found out I failed my 3hr today, and set up to meet a nutritionist Monday This is my first pregnancy.....Feeling very overwhelmed, concerned, confused. Look forward to gaining advice and support from this group .
  • @MD12314‌ this is my third kid, but first experience with GD. I am still figuring all this stuff out too. These ladies have been amazing and are a wealth of knowledge and support. :)

  • @MD12314 You've come to right place!  Google is an okay resource for meal and snack ideas but not so helpful when it comes to the complications of GD:)  Our thread from last week has some good guidelines for carb and protein goals per meal.  And some discussion of snacks.  You should be able to find it within the first couple pages of the D14 board.

  • @MD12314‌ Welcome to the thread. Sorry you didn't pass, but pull up a chair and feel free to ask questions, rant, rave, bitch, moan...it's all good the first few days. We've all been there. :)

  • So, last night I had two corn tortillas, a few beans and a bit of Greek yogurt. My number was 144. Tonight I have potatoes, barbecue sauce (made with ketchup and honey), iced tea with agave nectar, and a handful of chocolate chips. My number was 77. WTAF.

  • @bowlwoman‌ my life exactly. I thought corn tortillas and chips were better than flour. I'm ready to swear off Mexican food. I think i found last time beans weren't a suitable protein/fiber source to offset the carbs.

I know from the last two times that rice and corn both spike my sugars, but I had NO sweeteners with the meal Monday night, ate lower than my carb allotment (and healthy carbs to boot) and I was sky high. Last night I eat my full allotment of crappy carbs and I'm super low.

I think it's the contractions and constipation. Yup, only thing that explains it.

  • Question for those who have seen a nutritionist. Was it a one on one appt or was it a group class. I was scheduled for a 2hr group class tomorrow but I just had to call and cancel because there is no way I could bring my boys and H is OOT for I don't even know how long.

My endo mentioned something about being able to do a phone consultation with the nutritionist if needed, so I called them earlier to see if I could just do that. Waiting to hear back now.

  • @kdm06c Mine is a one-on-one with the nutritionist at the MFM office, and then I also meet with the doctor for him/her to review my numbers. My visits are billed as doctor appointments, not nutritionist visits.

If you know the difference between a carb, fat, and protein, it should be pretty easy for them to go over the information on the phone. You've already been doing a version of the diet anyway, so you might be able to get away with asking some specific questions and going over your numbers. Is your endo planning for you to meet with a nutritionist every week/two weeks/month? If not, then you may already have the info you need that you would have gotten from the class.

Plus, you have us! :P Nothing like Internet strangers giving you medical advice.

@bowlwoman‌ I have seen an endo who I send all my logs and numbers to, and then I think the nutritionist only once since it's a 2hr group class. My numbers have been pretty good so far so I guess I'm doing OK with the diet. The only thing I feel like I need from the nutritionist is my target protein, fats, and calories since the only target number my endo gave me is carbs. If I have those I think I can adjust pretty easily if needed and be good.

ETA: medical advice from strangers has been the best advice so far lol!!

My diet just specifies one serving (7g) protein per serving of carbs (15g), and we don't have to worry about fats, other than to not overdo them for weight gain purposes. My target caloric intake is 2200 cal/day, but I usually never get near that much.

  • @bowlwoman‌ now that I have added more protein that is pretty much what I have been doing. Sweet! I am now just worried about calories. I have been hitting about 1500-1700 a day and I'm worried it's not enough.

Go hog wild with butter and throw some nuts on everything. You'll make up the extra calories in no time! :D

For me, it's not so much an issue, because I started this pregnancy around 270 pounds, so I'm not supposed to gain a lot of weight. And, with both girls I delivered within 5 pounds of my starting pregnancy weight, which means I dropped about 15-20 pounds after delivery. It was kind of nice. I'm looking forward to being below 250 after I evict this little dude. So far my weight gain/loss has been almost identical to my previous two pregnancies, so I guess this is just what my body does.
