Antagonist vs Long-lupron protocol

Hey ladies!  We are switching from the antagonist to the long-lupron protocol for IVF #2.  With the antagonist protocol we had "poor" quality embryos.  We are switching to the long-lupron protocol hoping to improve embryo quality.  So, did anyone have better quality embryos after switching protocols?

Off BC since Febuary 2006 3 Clomid Cycles in 2008- symptomatic, US just showed a tilted uterus, otherwise normal, HSG normal.  DH has an ejaculatory duct obstruction and a congenital absence of the vas deferens.  This is common with cystic fibrosis carriers, but he doesn't have cystic fibrosis. IVF #1 with TESE/ICSI (Antagonist protocol) Aug 2014=BFN (poor embryo quality)   IVF #2 ICSI long lupron protocol November 2014

Re: Antagonist vs Long-lupron protocol

  • I had 0 embryos during my antagonist cycle because I was a crappy responder and only got 4 follicles early on that weren't growing at all, so was cancelled for IVF #1
IVF #1.2 (with PICSI) was long lupron and I responded okay (thought we had 10 follies but only retrieved 8). However, my quality shocked even my RE. Every embryo that was fertilized made it to 5 day blastocyst, and all were excellent quality.

So we still got a pretty limited number of eggs to begin with, but it was quality over quantity for my long lupron cycle.

It will be interesting to hear the experience of others who used the long lupron protocol as well.

  • Bump! This is helpful for me too, as I start thinking about whether to do another IVF and whether to talk to my RE about a different protocol.

Official diagnosis: Unexplained IF. I am 32. I have low ovarian reserve (low AMH), and poor egg quality. I've also been diagnosed with mild glandular developmental arrest (lining problems, detected with EFT).

We are using open ID donor sperm. IUIs #1-7=BFN. IVF September 2014 antagonist protocol, 8R,5M,3F, 5 day transfer of 1 morula = BFN. IVF#2 planned for January 2015 (antagonist protocol + HGH).

  • @Sha259  Thanks for sharing your experience.  Numbers were not really an issue for us, but the embryo quality definitely was.  Hopefully switching to the long-lupron protocol will work well for us.  Good luck with your upcoming FET, I hope to see you in the November group.

  • I did the antagonist protocol twice and although I had 20+ eggs retrieved each cycle, only 4 made it to blasts (3 from cycle #1 and 1 from cycle #2).  We are trying the long lupron protocol this time in hopes for better quality.  I just started lupron last night though so I can't tell you what the results are for a few weeks.

    Best of luck to you!
