Sell me on a rock n play (for sleep)

It seems like a lot of you LOVE your rock n play. (I have another post about how my LO will not sleep flat.)

Anyways...we have a bouncer, traditional swing, and mamaroo (I know it's a lot of baby stuff but it's all been gifted second had to us.)

Would a RNP really be all that different from what we have? Should I run to the store tonight and get one because baby and I will suddenly be able to sleep??

Re: Sell me on a rock n play (for sleep)

  • I love the rock n play! Totally worth the forty dollars. That said, DD only naps in it during the day, she sleeps in the bassinet of the rock n play at night. My pedi was really anti-having her sleep in it at night, but I know lots of people who do use it for overnight sleep.

  • The rnp was the only bouncer/swing type seat we were given so I can't compare it to anything else, but it has been the best gift we were given! DS loves it and it is easy to take with us to the grandparent's house.
  • I think the structure of it is quite different than what you have. I have gotten a 4-5 hour stretch almost every night that he has been in it. I put him in it swaddled in a miracle blanket and have never used the vibration. I try not to put him in it during the day so his head is not always in the same position.

  • With my first my DH ran out to target at 9pm to buy it when DD was 4 weeks old. We have never looked back. DD2 loves it as well. I think it is a miracle device and I buy it for all of my expecting friends. They all love it too. I think it is totally worth it. With both kids we started getting 4-5 hour stretches pretty early on. Maybe we are just lucky. Or maybe it's the RNP.

  • We have had ours since our first son was born.  We had him sleep in it for the first 2 months, but had such a hard time transitioning him to the crib.

With our second we had him nap in it only.

This time around same thing, he sleeps in his crib at night and in the RNP for naps.  One thing I've done at night, if my son won't get to sleep, I put him in the RNP, once he's in a deep sleep I transfer him to his crib.  He'll usually stay asleep in the crib.  We haven't had to do this for a while though.

I've read things about how the RNP is not approved for sleep in Canada (they won't sell it there), and that some pediatricians don't think it's safe.  Due to that, I'm hesitant in having DS sleep in it overnight.

I agree with the PP about having your baby sleep in different positions (sometimes in the crib, sometimes in the RNP, etc).

We have a R n P and a Mamaroo, and if you've lowered your Mamaroo to cradle the baby vs the upright position it is essentially the same angle as the RnP (does that make any sense?). DS naps in the Mamaroo and sleeps in the RnP but he naps easily on flat surfaces (bed/couch) also. Good luck!

ETA so if you're LO sleeps well in the Mamaroo hopefully the RnP will work too! Also, I'm pretty sure someone posted the RnP are on sale at Walmart right now :)

  • We love ours. Both of my kids have slept very well in them from the start.

  • It's my go-to when DD won't sleep in the crib. She will sleep 6 hour stretches. Definitely worth it.
  • Love our RNP and it's the only thing he'll sleep in at night currently. Doesn't make him sleep through the night but pretty decent amount!

  • So I sent my husband by Wal-Mart on his way home from work last night to buy a RNP and it helped some last night. DD slept from 11:30-3:30. But didn't fall back asleep until about 6:00. My question for you ladies is how long do you leave the bouncer/vibrate part turned on?
  • We also went and got one last night. She slept In it alright but nothing miraculous yet. What I liked was being able to lay down while I rocked her so I was more relaxed. We got batteries today so we'll see if she likes the vibrating feature. Also, her being in the same room has it's comforts.

  • We don't use the vibration. We just swaddle him and put him in it asleep.

  • Is the angle and snuggle-ness factor really that different from a swing? DD doesn't like the swing for more then a few minutes (we've tried different speeds, with and without the vibrate turned on, etc).

  • I'm curious to know as well... Is it that different from a swing?? Ds doesn't stay in his either for more than 10 min
  • We don't have a traditional swing, but have a mamaroo instead so for us it is different. DS sleeps in the RNP for naps during the day and does really well. We don't use the vibration on it, although sometimes I do just sit and rock him for a minute to help him get to sleep. I love that it's lightweight too and I can just pack it up and throw it in the car or move it around the house easily.

We have The Fisher-Price snuggle bunny swing and bought the Fisher-Price rock and play. The rock and play has more of an angle to it where little ones feet are bent up. Much like a car seat. The swing is more laid back,

  • The RNP is what LO is sleeping in until his room is completed and the crib is assembled. This was supposed to be done already but hubby is taking his sweet old time with the project. Anyway, it is a different angle than our swing and it hugs baby in closer. LO does great in it but hates his swing.

  • LO naps in the RNP during the day or we will put her in it while I'm in the kitchen, folding clothes, pumping etc. I just rock her and she loves it most of the time.

I really like it and it's light weight and easy to move around.

I think it's a crap shoot. DS1 loved his swing and hated the rock and play. Like HATED. We sold it. I saw one for $20 at the local consignment store and figured, why not try it again? (Ours is the basic one without vibration). I like how portable it is, and it fits better next to the bed than the bassinet, I don't even have to lift my head to check on DS2. He loves the R&P, we don't have a swing this time so he's never been in one, but we do have him sleep in the rock and play most of the time, sometimes he's in his bassinet if that's where I happen to lay him down.

Personally I don't think it's a magic baby device anymore than anything else, it's just another thing for your kid to sleep in (or not), some like it, some don't.

DD is not a fan of the swing, we can maybe get a 20 minute stretch on it. She sleeps about a 5 hours straight stretch in the RnP at night then another 3 hours. I think that it is softer and is almost like a hammock so it really cradles her. We do put her in a sleep sac as well when we put her in at night.

  • MAJOR miracle here last night. I bought a Rock N Play out of desperation and we tried it out. It took some experimenting (swaddle vs no swaddle, white noise on/off, vibrate on/off, etc.) but we got her to sleep in it for 2 hrs, then 1, then 3, then 3. Lots of awake time in between, but man, what a relief! She's almost 4 weeks old and this is the first time she's slept not on one of us for more then 30 minutes ever. We've mimicked the correct formula (swaddle pod, sound machine on, dead asleep, warm blanket) in her swing, basinette, and crib to no avail. We may even get crazy tonight and put it in our bedroom so we can both sleep in bed. At the same time. Whoa... (We've been rotating sleeping on the couch with her on our chests this whole time).

Definitely try it next to your bed that is one of my favorite features. If I put her in there and she still awake I can just hang my hand over and easily rock her or turn the vibration on. She also has been taking a pacifier so if it falls out and she fusses I can easily put pop it right back in without moving from a laying down position.

We've had it for four nights now and love it. I was actually thinking maybe she was just more mature and sleeping better but when I tried to have her sleep flat in the pack and play during a nap she woke up right away crying.
