Baby play time

Just curious what others are doing.... When your LO is awake how much time do you spend playing with them versus having them "watch" you do things (including taking them along with you to run errands)? I used to spend a lot of time "playing" with DD but now that she is awake for 2 hours that is much to long for me to actively play with her!

Re: Baby play time

  • 2hrs? We are constantly doing things as naps are super rare. She's pretty much awake straight through from 7am to 7am give or take. If she does nap it's usually less than 30min since #1 wakes her up.
  • Loading the player...
  • She crawls around on the floor with the dog and and plays in her exersaucer.
  • He is up nonstop. 2 naps of 30 min if lucky. Daycare has been great for him since I am clueless. Activities: bathtime, baby yoga once a week, he plays on playmat or bouncer. Sometimes I will read but he is too bouncy to enjoy it. We run lots of errands.... So he gets a lot of stroller time. Sometimes we dance and I sing a lot... But I feel like I an kinda boring.

  • I suppose I should add she is awake for 2 hours and napping for only 30-45 minutes a few times so practically awake all day!!!!
  • Same here with the non-constant entertainment. I talk to him while I put away clothes, etc he loves watching me vacuum! That's why when I open these threads and it's like 18 different activities and 100% attention, I feel inadequate and have to remind myself that I have a happy, well-adjusted baby.

  • I've been feeling like a not good mother since I haven't been giving Dd 100% attention! That's a good thought @baileymama3‌ as my dd is very happy even when she is off doing her own thing; I just need to remind myself of that.

No way I can entertain him all the time! I have the radio on all day and sometimes we dance around to the music, and I'll play with him while he's on his play mat. I put him in his excersaucer so I can get stuff done, or in his high chair in the kitchen. We do at least one walk a day with the dog and run errands. We're signed up for mom and tot swimming lessons starting in October. I want him to be able to play independently so momma can have a coffee!
  • Twice a day he gets 5-10 mins (as long as he will tolerate) of back and tummy time on his mat and in his crib, doorway jumper (have started putting mat next to it so he can do both), exersaucer and in the stroller for walks outside. We have started putting him in his high chair while we eat dinner and reading a book before bedtime but otherwise he gets held, talked to and danced around. Most of the things mentioned are to give my arms a break from holding him/distraction purposes as much as entertaining him.
  • With DD1, I was constantly doing stuff with her and she was always overstimulated. With DS, I did less one on one time and he was more laid back. DD2 spends much of the day observing her siblings or in the ergo. She is super easy going. I think they really benefit from a good amount of down time/observing/discovering on their own. DD1 spends probably a total of 1.5-2 hrs of quiet time in her room. DS spends a good 45 min of quiet time in his room + a nap. They need time to digest everything they're learning.

  • With a 3 yer old and an at home job there's no way I can play with her all the time. There are certain things I try to do with her every day (read books, let her stand, etc) and I talk to her and interact while doing things, but she observes a lot. Her favorite thing is watching her brother, so that's good! If ds naps and she is up I try to give her a little more attention just because I can and it's fun, but she is happy.

  • When I'm getting ready in the morning I plop her down in various baby containment devices so she can always see me and I talk to her while she plays and I get ready. After work I spend as much time with her as I can because I've usually only got an hour before she goes to sleep. Weekends are a crap shoot. Sometimes we have a ton of stuff to do and sometimes we sit around and play all day.
  • Like other posters , I do play with LO but not every moment he's awake
He alternates betwen his mamaroo , bouncer , bumbo , piano exersaucer thing and his baby gym
We read books and sing , look at stuff and go on walks

  • She does a lot of rolly time on the floor. I scatter some favorite toys and she just rolls all over the place and scoots and explores them. When I'm in the kitchen I put her in the exersaucer. I tend to extend BFing a bit and play with her on my lap for an extra 10-15 min too.

The reality is a good chunk of her day is spent being carted around to appointments, school dropoff/pickup and outside for kiddo to play.

Poor girl gets maybe 2-3 books a week, and that's only if I happen to read to kiddo before her bedtime. I used to read to kiddo a lot but it just falls under my radar these days. I should be better about that.
  • See! Voila! A14 inspired me!
  • I put one on the play mat, one in the excersaucer, then switch. When they are done with that I have to step in, I will read them books, or take them outside, or go run errands. I do let them have a lot of alone time now. I know when they need/want me they will let me know.

  • I try to read to him every day -- DD likes to read a lot and he listens to those books, too, but I try to throw in an actual age-appropriate book for good measure. Other than that, he spends a lot of time just rolling around on the floor with toys. Or sitting in my lap while I play with DD. He likes the exersaucer as well. And of course most of his day = being carted around to big sister's activities. I'd say we keep him busy...but we are not constantly playing with him by any means. Second Child 4 LYFE.
