Potty Training

DS just turned 2 on the 5th and he has been saying PeePee. This morning he said it, smacked his diaper and ran to the toilet. Needless to say, I think he is getting ready to potty train. Anyone started yet? Any words of wisdom/advice? I am thinking of skipping the potty and going straight to a kids toilet seat attachment. Has anyone done that? TIA

I don't have a little potty, only the Prince Lionheart weepod for the big toilet. It was heavily recommended on the TB for little boys when DS1 was little. Works great for us.

DS2 has been telling me when he pees for awhile now but I do not trust him to tell me before every time so no potty training for us. I expect to do it late winter. DS1 was doing the same thing at this age and I did a slow transition for him and it worked wonderfully, very few accidents from day 1. I have DS2 in pull ups instead of diapers now and we do changes on the toilet every 2 hours and anytime he wants to go to the bathroom I let him. Right now we are working on the concept pee goes in the potty. When I actually potty train we will switch to pushing the undies stay clean and dry concept.

  • At this age I would follow his lead. If he says he needs to go, put him on the potty. Maybe start getting into a routine of peeing on the potty every night before bed. I never did the little potty or the toilet seat because I wanted him to be able to use a public bathroom, or a bathroom at someone else's house. I put him on backwards for a long time, it makes it easier for him to aim.

  • DD has been peeing successfully on the little potty, about 3/4 of the time.  She was afraid of the full sized seat.  We forgot her potty on vacation, and she refused to try at all.

Then, after getting back, I showed her that with the attachment snapped in, there's no possible way to fall in.  I had her come over and hit the seat attachment and see that she couldn't force it in.  After that she started going on the real potty, so hopefully we've beaten the fear?

I dunno, but we're taking her lead.  Haven't tried outside of our house yet, but may try that soon.

    We have:
Fisher Price learn to flush toilet (which has the blue seat you can snap onto the regular toilet)
    Green Sprouts training pants
    Potty book

We started by putting her in training pants for at least an hour per day or until she wet them/ used potty.  This was just to help her realize when she pees, and what that feels like before/after.  Every time she sat on the potty to try, she got a sticker.  Every time she successfully went, she got a yogurt raisin or yogurt pretzel (just the snacks she loves but doesn't get all the time.)

She'll be resistant to the idea of it, until she thinks it through long enough that she's comfortable (days, weeks, months, who knows) and then she's just ready to try.  She's had this process move along much faster than I would have if I were in control haha.
  • We just bought the Fisher Price toilet. He loved the lights and sound when it flushed. I was thinking of a gradual approach to it too. We aren't in a rush for it so I figured we would just follow his lead.

  • I recommend the 3 day training approach.  It worked great for us (at only 21 months)..and we never used the little potty chair.  We only used the thing that goes on the regular toilet but DD was fine with that.  Good luck!

  • DD had been consistently peeing on the potty 2-3xs a day for over a month, and then stopped suddenly about 2 weeks ago. So, we're putting things on hold for now.

For DS, we got a Baby Bjorn potty seat & a potty ring. He uses them interchangeably.

  • We went with a toilet seat that has a normal seat and then a smaller seat for kids that hides in the lid. I like it a lot. One less thing to keep in my bathroom.

  • I hate the little potty so much so I have no intention of bringing it out for DD because I don't need one more thing to clean, lol. We have a seat that goes on the regular toilet. She is in a phase where she'll ask to use the potty, run to it, set up her little seat and then not go. But I figure at least she's getting used to sitting on it and is enthused about the idea.

Ethan is doing this too. He asks to sit and goes through the whole routine, but never goes. We just sit him there figuring he may surprise us one day.
