Severe constipation

So I was looking around to see if another mom posted on this I didn't find anything.

But I'm having bad constipation, and when I say bad, I haven't gone to the bathroom in nearly 8 weeks.

I'm in horrible pain. My dr put me on 3 meds now to try and help. No luck. I've taken every over the counter drug that I'm aloud. Including colanoscopy (sp?) preps.

I do know pregnancy causes this, along with prenatal vitamins and I have really huge cyst that also don't help.

Do any of you mommas have anything you've tried and actually helped? I'm to the point I have barley eaten in days, and have no idea what to do.

  • I took Colace and it worked. 8 weeks? You poor thing! My OB told me last appointment not to go more than 3 days without a bowel movement

8 weeks?! Is that possible? Magnesium citrate $1 at Walgreens. It's like dynamite for your butthole. Have you tried glycerine suppositories?

Yes I've tried both! It's horrible. I'm a pharm tech, and it's to the point I buy mag citrate and drinking at work. My pharmacist has had me try everything as well.

  • Suppositories are the answer for me. Is 8 weeks even possible? I'd probably be first in line to have that shit medically removed. Ouch.
  • Lol my dr said he's had a few patients like it, and normally the bowl prep works for them.
  • Colace and Metamucil... Also if you like bread and oil dip... Eat a some bread diped in olive or avacado oil with garlic powder, salt and crused pepper. I ate around 1/4 cup of the oil mix with sourdough bread... I am obsessed with it and EVERYTIME I scarf it down within a day I am all cleaned out. And bonus if it doesn't work at least it's really yummy!!
  • When I'm not pregnant I'm an every other week girl. Being pregnant has actually helped me to be more regular. But some if the things that usually work for me are; peaches, watermelon, COCONUT OIL (like 3 or more big spoonfuls) shredded wheat, hot baths & black coffee or tea. There are some good resources online about positions that will help with a BM. Maybe go look to see if anything seems like it will help you?

    Good luck!

And not to be so gross but watch out for tearing or bleeding after that long!

I've been constipated for a few days especially due to some different meds I've taken during pregnancy. But 8 weeks... that is a long time and it sounds like you've tried everything.

Please go back to your doctor and let them know. Please advocate for yourself and let them know you haven't been eating. You don't want to be losing weight during your pregnancy.

I'm not a medical professional, but 8 weeks sounds like a long time and weird that he knows a few pregnant people with that problem and unconcerned. If he is still unconcerned about 8 weeks and the weight loss, I would try to get a second opinion. Good luck!

  • Though not nearly as severe as you, there are a few sure-fire foods that hit my colon hard... Volcano rolls from my favorite Sushi joint and restaurant Mac n Cheese w/ bacon. Both of them cleared things up within the hour.

Sorry, I've got nothing else for ya.

  • I had a similar issue a few weeks ago. I had tried hot prune juice, Benefiber, Colace, Milk of Magnesia, and Magnesium Citrate. My doctor explained to me that they were not working, because I had an impaction. With an impaction, you will need to go to the doctor. They will have to manually disimpact, do a warm water enema, or both. I also had to take a substance called Go Lightly, which is like magnesium citrate on steroids. It sounds terrible, but I swear it was not as bad as it sounds. The loss of dignity was totally worth the relief. An impaction can be serious if left untreated. I suggest you speak to your doctor.

  • Have you tried an enema or going to one of those colon cleansing places? Agree with PPs that you should get a second opinion and try to get some kind of intervention ASAP. I'd see a doctor that specializes in that intestinal area.

  • OMG!!!!! 8 weeks!!!!!! I didn't go for 2 weeks and was seriously planning to go to the Emergency room as soon as I got home from my travels. Constipation has been my worst symptom by FAR, but I feel guilty complaining now that I've heard your story. I had to take SennaLax, its a vegetable based laxative that's pregnancy safe. I also have been talking 3 stool softeners a day trying to get things back in order. I'm sure you've spoken to your doctor, but If not 8 weeks can be VERY serious. Seek medical attention, and while you are probably desperate don't just take anything. Several stimulant laxatives can be very dangerous. Good Luck!!!
  • I forgot- a woman I know swears by aloe juice.
  • I assumed the 8 weeks was a typo that's so crazy.  Please please go to the doctor ASAP -- call your regular family doctor, and if he/she won't take you seriously then go to the ER.  This needs immediate attention.

  • I think you should step away from the computer right now and go to the Dr. You could have or could end up with a very serious medical problem!

  • Thanks ladies. I have talked to a few different drs about it, and have done a few enemas (they are the worst)
I haven't gone to anyone that cleans you out. That sounds horrible as well!
    I haven tried coconut oil!
  • 8 weeks is horrifying. I had a few bad movements after being backed up for about a week. I drink metamucil, take colace and have dried prunes at home to munch on and have seen improvements. not totally regular but better than rock hard movements, and now at a couple times a week. I regularly I am an everyday girl but between pregnancy and zofran, I am having problems. But 8 weeks is crazy, go to the Dr or the ER. Make them fix it. Way too long.

Enemas are usually a last at-home resort. I'm thinking an ER visit is becoming necessary for you when multiple enemas have yielded no results. I can assure you as someone who previously worked in the ER you would be taken very seriously and all efforts would be made to empty your colon. This is becoming an emergency.
  • Wow, I am so sorry .... the longest I've gone is a few days, and that is way too long for me. Prune juice always does the trick, but it sounds like you may need medical intervention, not things you can do yourself. 8 weeks, seems like something could be obstructed.

  • My mom suffered an impaction while on a trip in Europe (we don't do well with pain medication), and things never were really quite the same again, she developed ulcers and ultimately she died from an undiagnosed bleeding ulcer and frickin' cold medicine.  If you have done multiple Enemas and nothing is moving--you really really really need to go to the ER.  Then come back and read the thread for tips on how to stay OUT of the ER.

I'm really sorry for the pain you must be in.

  • At this point you probably need some manual disimpaction but a colonic may help. I had a friend in a similar situation and she said the colonic worked wonders... like one giant enema.
  • I had to give myself an enema at home after 8 days. It was a little rough, but it worked. At 8 weeks though, I think I'd go to the hospital and have them pull it out of me. That sounds horrid. I'm so sorry you are dealing with this.
  • Please come back and update us OP... This is a serious issue.
  • Are you running a fever or anything? You are going to get very sick if you don't get help asap. Let us know how you are doing!

So I called my oncoligist yesterday and he sent in another Rx, Since he's so far away we couldn't get in today but I see him Tuesday.
We live in a tiny town and the drs here don't do much for me.
He thinks it's my tumor pushing against my other oragans. I saw him the 1st week of August and he wasn't super concered then.
  • Get to the nearest town and get to an ER! Girl you can't wait until next Tuesday if you haven't pooped in 8 weeks. I'm not even really sure how possible that is with out you being extremely sick anyway.
  • aylacbw said:

I'm sorry but this is absolutely ridiculous. Why aren't you listening to this advice? OP, your doctor is a quack. You need to find someone else. And for god sakes, if you don't advocate for your own health, no one else will.

This. Idk what an oncologist is going to do about the fact you haven't pooped in 2 months.

Multiple people have told you what you have to do, this is SERIOUS...

If you are going to come onto a forum like this and ask for advice and help, you should be prepared to consider some of this advice. Multiple people have expressed their concern for you, even though you don't seem to be showing concern yourself. It blows my mind that you would not see this as something EXTREMELY SERIOUS and that you would even consider STILL waiting until next week. The idea of the ER having to manually remove it sounds awful, but not nearly as awful as the potential PERMANENT damage you are doing to yourself, let alone your unborn child. Insane.

  • I'm sorry. I too am starting to believe this isn't true. First, I find it hard to believe anyone could go 8 weeks without a bm and still be alive. Second, if they were still alive, they'd be in such excruciating pain that they'd probably be in an ambulance to the ER. So if this is true, the fact that you wouldn't take people's sincere advice about going to the ER makes me think it hasn't really been 8 weeks.
  • Wow 8 weeks? I don't know a doctor who wouldn't be concerned about this. I hope this is not a joke, but I hope you try seeking a specialist for this issue. This is more serious than constipation..
  • For me Activia has really helped obviously it is not a quick acting solution but right now im sure you're just looking got ANYTHING at all. Stay regular with it. Eat 2 a day and be faithful with it and it will stay helping after about 1 to 2 weeks. Other good thing is that its a yogurt obviously lol and you can eat those while trying everything else and have as something you do all the time
