San Fran in Jan?

Need some insight on a possible trip.

DH travels for work periodically, and if it's somewhere worth going, I'll tag along.
He's slated to go to San Francisco this January. I'm not sure if I want to go. Usually, his trips are in warmer climates and I have no issues sitting by a pool/ocean alone, drink in hand. I know i won't be able to do this in January.

So....those who know the area, is it worth going in Jan? I'll likely be alone a lot. Is there enough sight-seeing stuff to keep me busy?
Also...I'd want to add a day or two on and drive to Napa. Worth it that time of year?

Thanks :)

Re: San Fran in Jan?

  • I went in Jan. I was coming back from a business trip and had a stop over there, so stayed a few days. It was great. But I'm also from Vancouver, so used to grey skies and constant drizzle in winter

  • There is a lot to see and do, but definitely dress in layers. A lot of people assume it is warm because it is California, and get an unpleasant surprise when all they've packed are shorts and tank tops. As long as you have jeans and a comfy sweatshirt, you should be ok. Also Napa is lots of fun. Try for a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards if you can.

Is there ever a bad time to go to Napa?

True....but I don't really want go if it's "the worst time of year" to visit.

Would be like someone coming to Boston in February. You could do it, and find things to do....but I wouldn't recommend it.
  • I would do it! It'll be cold, but then you can go down to Pier 39 (fisherman's warf) and have a bowl of clam chowder in a fresh made sourdough bread bowl. Mmmmm

i LOVE San Fran. its one of my favorite cities ever. Theres the Art museum, the ghirardelli  chocolate factory, pier 39 which has tons of sight seeing. Ride the cable cars. Go to China Town. go to haight-ashbury  Go see lombard street, the golden gate bridge <3

  • Take it from a former east-bayer with family in the city:

    GO!

    -avoid the wharf and Alcatraz
    -visit the Japanese tea garden/arboretum
-be a kid for an afternoon and visit the exploratorium
    -go to the zoo
-take a 30 min BART ride to surrounding cities for some cute shops/walking around (walnut creek for some light overspending $$$ and a couple coffee shops)
    -NAPA

    The list could go on...

Definitely later. I'd do a light sweater or long sleeved shirt under a jacket and a scarf.

@adinashoshana‌ Why avoid Alcatraz? I love it, I think I've been at least four times. Though it will be really cold out there in Jan.

Anyway, I definitely think you should go. Tons to see and do. Napa will be awesome even though it'll be the off season. For some non-wine related Napa fun (yes, it's possible) check out Segway Napa, a guided tour around Napa on a Segway. It's a blast. They have a foodie tour that I haven't done, sounds cool.

We have to stay at the wharf because of the location of the convention DH is going to.
He's also pretty excited to see Alcatraz, so I don't think we'll be able to skip that either.

How cold are we talking? I'm from Bahston....so I'm no stranger to the cold.
  • In my experience it is not really cold if you're from somewhere actually cold. It's more cool but it's frequently windy. I think the average high is still 60 or so. And in theory it rains in the winter there.

  • @karich, DH and I went to San Francisco when we were still dating in college. It was December/January, and we did a boat tour of San Fran Bay. In the picture of us out on the water we were just wearing fleece jackets. We are from Colorado. The wind got pretty cold, but I don't remember the trip being particularly cold :)

  • I hear you on the shorts. I'm a transplant to northern cal. I enjoy watching the locals in their heavy winter coats. They always give me judgey looks when I'm wearing short sleeves and dd has on a long sleeves, no jacket. But when we go to San Fran we take jackets year round just in case. The breeze there really can be crazy sometimes.

    60?

    Lol!!

You know what people from New England do in 60 degree weather?

    We wear shorts :)

Haha, I just checked back in on this thread. Us northern californians are weather wimps.
