Random nick names

edited September 2014 in Baby Names
Does anyone in your family have a really random nick name. My friend pointed out to me once how "everyone" in my family has random nick names.

Angelia- Suzy. Her older sisters favorite character in a book was Suzy so she called her that.

Mark- crow. Mark played football in hs and there was some foot ball player named crow so his brother started calling him that.

Shelia- Margaret or Mag. Her BIL met her and said she didn't look like a Sheila, she looks like a Margaret.

James- Henry. James is his dad's name and he hates his middle name (Edgar) so he just came up with Henry.

Virginia- dawn. She was named after our great aunt virginia dare. Dare wasn't a good nn but we already called our GA Virginia so they came up with Dawn lol

Breanna- Bee. We called her bebe when she was little just as a cutesy nick name but dropped a B once she got a little older. This one isn't as random as the rest.

*and when I say nick names, I mean these are what these people go by. Most people don't even know my mom is angelia or my dad is mark.

Re: Random nick names

  • My brother goes by Bob. Bob isn't his middle name nor is Robert. It was a phase in high school were people added Bob to the end of pretty much everybody's first name. It was just a phase for most but for some reason it stuck on my brother and everybody still calls him Bob.

  • Oh Yes!!! Our family loves nicknames and I pretty much only refer to 90% of my family by their nicknames!

    My sisters:
Casandra/Sandie - Goon. Someone used to call her Sani Magoony, but Goon has stuck.

Stephanie - Meppie/Mep. No clue how this came about

    My nieces:
Rebekah - Kiddles. It started out Kiddle Diddles but she is now 18 and everyone calls her Kiddles :)

Sarah - Im not really sure how or where it came from but her mom used to call her Oni Oni Oxen Free? So, she is known to everyone as Oni and then somehow I call her Ox or Oxen :/ She is 16 now and I've called for Ox for the last 12-13 years. I am a mean aunt, I guess?

Andrea - Used to go by Drea, then that got shortened about 8 years ago and now is known as Dee.

All the grandkids call my mom, Mom.ert instead of Grandma.

There are tons more but these are my favorites!

  • We have a couple on random nns in the family.

My baby brother, Ian, is known as Beany Boy or Beaner amongst family. Started by calling him Iany-beany as a baby (he was smallish) and evolved from there. (FWIIW, he's 6'3" now...)

My BIL has called me Sprig for over 20 years and it caught on in the family. Not sure I can explain in any way that will make sense... My sister used to play this annoying game where she would call me random things and expected me to logically justify why I was not that thing. For example, she'd call me a spoon and I'd have to explain I was not made of metal, had 4 appendages, not a single long handle and my head was not concave, etc. She'd keep it up for an hour or more if she was bored. I was like 13. Anyway, once, after a long session of this she called me a sprig. I was burned out and all of the arguments I could come up with under pressure didn't work (sprigs start small & grow, as do little girls; sprigs are alive, as was I... I hope you get the idea). Anyway... My sis's BF (now my BIL) latched on to that, started calling me Sprig and it stuck. Even today, my nieces often call me Sprig or Aunt Sprig. My actual name is Laura. Sprig was supposed to be my screen name here, but I nust have mistyped and the darned iPad apparently autocorrected it to Spring and I did not notice until it was too late. ;-)

My sister never had a nn of any kind. She is Elizabeth and nothing else. No Liz. No Beth. Proof if a kid does not want a nn, they can fight it & win. (I can get away with Lizbeth, but I'm the only one.)

  • My names Laura Nicole but my nickname is Pearl....it's the only thing I'd answer to as a little kid. It came from my Papa, he had a random nickname for everyone. My mom and sister were both Lucy (actual names Dawn & Ashleigh). One cousin got Fred (actual name Marcus), another Clarence (actual name Peter). Some people got Sadie, Hazel etc

My uncle called me McGoof, don't really know where it came from but he always told I'd work at McDonald's for some reason, hence McGoof (very weird haha)

My sister, Ashleigh, gets Ash (pretty normal nn) and an uncle calls her shleigh of the ash, just kind of switches the beginning and the end of her name around (no idea why)

Another family members name was Don but went by Duke. Most people didn't know his name was Don.

That's all I can think of at the moment. I agree though, I think every family has members with complete random nn
  • DH was a little put off when he heard my Dad call me "Goose".

    The evolution:

    My name is Victoria.

My Dad says he started calling me "Lucy" because of the show I Love Lucy.

From there it evolved to "Loosey Goosey". I Don't know why....

Then, Dad shortened that mouthful to "Goose."

My father is the only person who calls me this and I'm used to it so I didn't think anything of it when he called me that in front of DH.

It's weird how these things happen.
  • My SIL is Whitney, but the family calls her Muffin.

  • I think my nickname maybe the worst!
I am named after my mother except for an e at the end of my middle name. So how they got Pokey out of Martha Anne, I will never know.
  • I've got a great uncle Clarence who has been called Willie for at least 70 years (he's in his 90s).
  • My FIL has called my DH "rat" since he was little. He even used to tell him he was born with a tail which they had surgically removed. It's kind of strange.

  • My mom insisted that no one shorten my long name to a nickname. That's how I ended up being called Nick my entire childhood... Nick is short for nickname, ha ha!
  • We have a friend named Lisa that made a Homer Simpson face once and we've called her Homer ever since. It's been twenty years and we still call her Homer.

  • I've had a couple nicknames over the years. One was Tasmanian devil or taz for short. Or the other one was/is becca necca nose as my name is Rebecca Nicole. Not very fond of becca necca nose or b-n-n as it was shortened by some ppl
  • @bromios said:

I think a lot of these are pet names used by my family rather than nns, strictly speaking, but:

My little sister - Juniper, Junie, June Bug, Juniper Berry

My little brother - Nonie (like no-knee), Nolie (no-lee)

    Me - Sharleelee *shudder*

And my big brother got away with never having a nn.

Is your little brother's name Nolan? Bc my DS is Nolan and my mom calls him Nonie.

My grandmother is "Poomie" and she was called that by her kids long before she had grandkids. I know why, but it's hard to explain and kind of a depressing story, so I'll leave it out here.

  • My little sister is known to everyone as Sugar. It evolved from my step dad calling her mushugana. He was ex-Mormon not Jewish and he was not using the Yiddish definition. For him it was just a nonsense word that sounded like "my sugar".

Due to various circumstances most people call her Sugar. Me and my grandparents are the only people I know of who use both her NN and her given name interchangeably.

  • My initials were LEW before I got married. My immediate and extended family abd basically anyone who knew me as a child have always called me Lew. My SIL is also named Laura, so now my ILs abd their extended family and family friends call me Lew. My nieces call me auntie Lew. I one introduced myself as Laura at a party and my nieces looked at me like I grew a third head.
