Induction without epidural?

I'm getting induced on Thursday night, and my original birth plan was to go med free. I'll be on cervadil Thursday night, then starting pitocin friday morning. I'm still hopefully going to try this without an epidural, has anyone out there done this, any advice? And even if you haven't gone epidural free, any helpful advice would be appreciated!

Fyi, other pain meds are out of the question due to allergies to morphine and fentanyl. I also have some pretty strong reactions to pain meds and I'm worried the epidural will cause my bp to drop.

Re: Induction without epidural?

  • That would have been my plan, had the cervidil worked. No advice, but good luck!

  • I haven't gone without the epidural because I'm a huge wimp but they should start the pitocin gradually and if your body begins to progress on your own you should be ok with it if you have prepared yourself for a med free. Usually the really horrible, one on top of each other contractions come when you are maxed out on the pitocin. Also communicate with your nurse and OB that your goal is med free and if able, you would like to start on a low dose of the pitocin.
  • I wasn't induced but after my water broke they had to give me pitocin to make my contractions regular- I ended up asking for an epidural BUT it wasn't placed until I was complete because of many failed attempts. The pain was extremely difficult to handle but it's possible. I was thankful for the 30 min break it gave me before they had me start pushing though.
  • Question, does anyone know if u can have them turn it off after awhile to see if my body progresses on its own? And are you still able to move around pretty well even with the iv in?
  • @rebennett06‌ once you're on pitocin you are stuck in bed, at least in my experience
  • I ended up with a med free induction with my last. Not the way it wanted things to go but The epidural only took from mid-thigh to toes on one side after two failed placements.

If you are dilating and effecting on your own beforehand, and they start at the lowest dose and increase gradually, it's totally doable. Not fun but I didn't notice any difference in the contractions between my first labors which were not inductions and my 3rd that was.
  • Thank you guys for the advice and sharing stories! I guess this just goes to show you that birth plans and babies don't usually mix! I'm just nervous because I had 9 months to get my head wrapped around one birth plan, and now I have just a few days to get this one figured out!
  • I attempted med free with my first but after about 8 hours on pit, I couldn't handle the contractions and begged for an epidural. After the epi was placed, I wasn't able to move out of bed at all, but up until that point, I was allowed to walk around and move as I needed to. It is totally possible to have a med free birth with an induction, however. A friend of mine had an induction at nearly 42 weeks and gave birth to a 10 1/2 lb baby with a failed epidural, so there is definitely hope! Good luck! I will be induced Thursday or Friday if labor doesn't start on it's own and I had been planning for a med free birth this whole time. Based on my last experience, I know that I will choose to get an epi if I am induced and I'm pretty disappointed about the whole situation.

  • My plan was to have a natural birth epi free but by 5cm I was in agony. I opted for the epi and it was a life savor! The pain of the contractions were so intense and after the epi I felt nothing! It was a beautiful thing!
  • Lurking from 'O14. I had an induction (cervidil overnight, then pitocin) with my DS and went pain med/epidural free. Once they broke my water things progressed fairly quickly. I had about 1 hr of awful pain, but really, it was manageable. You can totally do it, but don't feel bad if you change your mind and go for the epidural.

  • That was my plan. They started me on the lowest dose and I was able to sit in a chair and move around, until LO heartbeat started to go all crazy. I think I lasted 5-6 hours just on pit.

The contractions were super manageable, even as they kept cranking it up. The breaking point for me was when they broke my water. Those contractions became to difficult for me to focus through and I chose to get the epidural.

Just go in with a positive mind set. Also, make it clear to your nurse what you want. She helped my DH maneuver me into good positions and we told her to stop asking my pain levels.

  • It is possible. I ended up having pit after failing to progress past 4cm. They started me on a low dose and I was able to labor on a birth ball for awhile. They turned up my pit after an hour and that's when things really got intense. I went from 5 to pushing in a little over an hour. I was able to go med free thanks to my husband and mom really helping me through each contraction.

I had pre-e and my cervix was still hard so they started me on cervidil at 5pm. The plan was to take the cervidil out at 5am the next morning(if it didn't fall out on it's own) and start me on Pitocin. The cervidil was enough because by early the next morning I was having contractions (like really bad period cramps), then all of the sudden my water broke on it's own and the real contractions started (super painful). I asked for the epidural but when they checked me, I was already fully dialated (went from 2 cm to 10 cm in 30 mins). There was no time for the epidural and LO's heart rate was dropping to 50 during each contraction because the contractions were SO strong and painful. They kept having me change positions on the bed, from side to side and then kneeling on the bed and I had an oxygen mask as well. They finally wheeled me into the operating room since they were thinking they were going to have to do an emergency CS but as soon as we got into the OR, LO's heart rate got better. They told me to start pushing and after about 10 painful contractions later, she was out. She was born at 4:45am, 15 mins before they were going to take the cervidil out and start me on Pitocin.

So yes, you can be induced and not have an epidural. It was not what I had planned (I wanted the epi, but I progressed to quickly) and there was no time.

Everyone is different though. I've heard birth stories where they were on cervidil and then started Pitocin and still didn't progress enough. It just depends on how your body responds to the interventions.

  • With my last delivery I wasn't induced but my contractions never started on their own after my water broke so they started me on pitocin. When they started it I was only 2cm and wasn't fully effaced. I started out laying in bed at first but knew if I wanted to go med free I had to get out of that bed.
I think I literally sat in the rocking chair for 85% of my labor. It was just he best position for me to be in. I also got up and sat on the birthing ball for a bit, but it wasn't as comfortable.
I'm not going to lie, I cringed everytime the nurse came in to turn up the dose. I just tried to take it one contraction at a time and breath through them. My DH was great support at trying to divert my attention by telling me some of the most random things. Another piece of advice, don't watch the screen that is monitoring your contractions. If I saw a big one on screen I tended to tense up. So, I had to quit looking at the screen.
Transition was hard, but I just kept thinking the end is so close. Before I knew it I was pushing.
I didn't go in saying there is absolutely no way I wouldn't get an epidural, but I wanted to just see how much I could handle without one first. Just take it one contraction at a time and do what is best for you! Good luck!

I had a cervadil induction with DD1 that thankfully progressed quickly, without pitocin. I don't have much advice, but wanted to get an encouraging story in and say good luck!

  • I made it through 10 hours without the epidural but just couldn't do it anymore. If it had been less time, I probably would have been fine. It was just so exhausted that I was worried I wouldn't be able to push effectively if I didn't get one and rest for a short time first. With DS I wasn't induced and the contractions were so much more easy to handle. With this little guy my water broke, then they put me on pitocin and that's when it got insanely painful very quickly.
  • I had a pitocin induction due to hellp syndrome and an epidural was not an option due to low platelets. I'm a first time mom so I don't have anything to compare it to but the contractions were manageable until the last hour when I could feel the pressure of her moving on down. That was awful but it was more bad pressure than pain. Don't worry about not being able to take fent or morphine they don't do much to take pain away and only last a very short time. They made me more drowsy than anything. I was able to move around freely on mag sulfate, antibiotics, and pitocin so I guess that depends on hospital. Look into breathing techniques and positions to ease labor pain that will help! They say keep your voice to low tones when moaning through contractions it helps keep u in control as opposed to screaming and losing control. Good luck!!
  • @rebennett06 You took the question right out of my mouth, so glad you started this thread.

Also it's great to see so much input and so many varied stories. Keeps your mind open to all the options.

  • I was given Zytotec to soften cervix and then they broke my water. I wanted an epi but labor moved too fast and I went from 3-10 cm in half an hour! I didn't realize things were moving so fast, but it got to be a constant pain and then I felt the pressure to push. So I did it drug free not by choice and it hurt, but it wasn't anything you can't handle. Then after that I had to deliver the placenta and then get shots down there before stitches and that was not fun either. The good part is it was easier to walk around after this birth rather than waiting for epi to wear off.

  • I was induced 2 weeks ago (2 weeks early) with my first baby. I also wanted a natural med free birth and was very disappointed at first about the induction (for the health of the baby, she was growth restricted and full term). My doctor encouraged me that I could still try, the contractions might be more intense, but I could prepare myself for the pain mentally. I got through it pain-med free but afterwards was not sure it was worth it. I don't think I'd ever choose it again with an induction. My best advice is to keep an open mind and don't beat yourself up if it gets too intense. Just take it one step at a time and trust your body knows how to deliver your baby. More details below on how it went for me, but keep in mind everyone's bodies and experiences are different.

I was given cervadil at 6pm and then at 10pm, it's a 4 hour dose they give up to 4 times to see how your body reacts. I started having light contractions every three minutes that were really mild like the worst gas you've had (2-3 of 10 pain scale). I was only like 2-3cm at this point. At 2am they started pitocin, which increased the pain of the contractions to a 4-5 level still every 2-3 mins. I couldn't sleep through them but my husband could haha, and rocking in the rocking chair made the more bearable. They broke my water at 9am and within 15-30 mins shit got real. I labored with intense contractions every 2 mins (7-8 pain level) until 2pm. When they checked then I was only 8cm, and was really discouraged and decided I might want an epidural, I didn't think I could handle it for another few hours! But by the time they called the doctor to check again I had made it to 10cm in about a half hour and the baby decided it was time to arrive. I pushed 5-6 times for 10-15 mins and there she was around 3pm! This part is not as painful, though it's physically harder, but you feel like you're accomplishing something. Not having the epi also causes you to feel any stitches you might need, but still not as bad as what you just went through.

Hopefully your hospital will allow you as much flexibility as mine did. I ate and drank whatever I felt like thought the whole thing which was important to keep my energy up. I had continuous monitoring of the baby but on a mobile device so I could keep moving around and finding positions to help lessen the pain. My nurse was absolutely amazing and helped me get through the worst of the contractions with different advice on how to handle them. I couldn't have done it without her! Good luck and just go with how you feel when your finally in there.
  • Lurking from august board as I have a September baby and her milestones will more closely match your board's LOs...

My water broke and when 20 hours later contractions had not picked up they started me on pitocin. I had a pain med free and otherwise intervention free labor after that. One thing my doctors/nurses did that helped was only using the minimum dose of pitocin needed to get my contractions to an effective level. The way they explained if to me is that they start at a low dose and increase every half hour or so. If they know you're planning an epidural then they keep increasing the dose to move things along. If you're not, they can stop upping the dose once contractions become effective. For me this was upped only 2 times, they upped the dose a third time but my contractions became 90 seconds long with 20 seconds in between so they backed the dose back down. Definitely worth discussing with your doctors! It definitely wasn't easy but it was manageable with the prenatal prep we did. And for what it's worth, I was able to move around and even be in the shower the whole time I was on pitocin. Good luck!
