Some of the articles even tried to excuse it away by mentioning his deep "christian" beliefs and his "east texas" background. Oh, ok. Looks like deep bleeding welts on a child to me, but I guess I was wrong and it's just how Jesus would raise a child.
Made him eat leaves?? Had a room full of belts? I am horrified. Horrified. I gave my babies 100 extra kisses tonight before bed.
I can't get the ticker to work, but I have two sons:
DH saw this earlier but not the full story; we were hoping it was inaccurate - I just hate this. I was at OU at the same time as Peterson, not that I knew him but always had the impression that he was a very nice upstanding guy. It's like people live in some alternate universe where physical abuse is a legitimate solution for things - what year is it? What freaking rock are you under?!
The NFL is a mess... These guys were raised as kids to go hard and hurt the opponent, added to the fact they are physically strong and have been told they are amazing their whole lives. They are in the "hurt" mentality all the time, so it's almost not a shock to me they don't know how to turn that instinct off at home. It makes me sick... And they really need to figure out how they are going to fix it.
Poor little baby... I hope he ends up with a family that showers him with love.
It makes me sad that im as jaded by my work that this is probably not as shocking as it should be. It's horrifying that this kid experienced this at the hands of Peterson. Glad this has come to light at least and the child can hopefully get safety and justice now.
ETA I don't know if that came out how i intended. I should probably mention I work for CWS.
No, it is very sad but unfortunately I have the same reaction that while this is terrible it is an incredibly common method of child discipline (using a switch) and I'm sure tons of people would see nothing wrong with it, or would say he just went overboard. It is sad that these athletes have so much but no one ever teaches social skills much less parenting skills, they are just supposed to be strong and win.
The Vikings are reactivating him. Peterson has rejoined practice and will play.
His statement reads, in part:
But deep in my heart I have always believed I could have been one of those kids that was lost in the streets without the discipline instilled in me by my parents and other relatives. I have always believed that the way my parents disciplined me has a great deal to do with the success I have enjoyed as a man. I love my son and I will continue to become a better parent and learn from any mistakes I ever make.
I am not a perfect son. I am not a perfect husband. I am not a perfect parent, but I am, without a doubt, not a child abuser. I am someone that disciplined his child and did not intend to cause him any injury. No one can understand the hurt that I feel for my son and for the harm I caused him. My goal is always to teach my son right from wrong and that’s what I tried to do that day.
I accept the fact that people feel very strongly about this issue and what they think about my conduct. Regardless of what others think, however, I love my son very much and I will continue to try to become a better father and person.
His statement makes me want to puke. He seriously doesn't think he did anything wrong! Also, I made the mistake of reading comments on one article, and plenty think it is fine too! Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people!?
Marla, in an article I read it said that he also got the poor child on the scrotum. He texted the mom saying that he felt bad he got him there. I guess rest was fine though?

I was afraid of that when I saw the marks and the location.
But yeah, due process.
Seriously, I love football but I am done with the NFL.
I hate everything about his statement and especially this: I am someone that disciplined his child and did not intend to cause him any injury.
It's sounds like the BS kids say.You didn't mean to break the lamp? Well WTF did you think was going to happen when you were throwing a ball right next to it?
I know he has to watch what he says since there is an ongoing case, but I'd prefer he just shut up.
I can't believe people can still legally hit their kids at all. It is insanity. You can't hit a dog, but you can hit a tiny person who loves you unconditionally. Such bullshit.
I can't get the ticker to work, but I have two sons:
They were talking about it on local talk radio. Every single one took the "O got hit with a switch and I'm ok" tact. Now, I will say that I don't think corporal punishment is ALWAYS abuse. I don't like it, don't do it, don't think it's necessary, also don't think it is always abuse. But what that man did to that boy was abuse. Period. No question. Regardless of how you feel about other times when people physically punish their kids.
WBIR has an article that outlines the line between abuse and discipline and what would warrant a DVS investigation.
Ugh, I hate this shit so much. My dad says his biggest regret as a parent was that he spanked us. I will never physically discipline my child. This always reminds me of the Louis CK standup, where he talks about how absurd it is that the only living thing we can hit, and not go to jail for it, are the most vulnerable and devastated by it.
I am glad to see some of the sponsors taking some action about their disappointment in the NFL. Radisson pulled sponsorship of Vikings, Anheuser-Busch and some others have made public statements expressing disappointment.
Money talks, so hopefully these companies going public will help to communicate the true public opinion/outrage to the NFL. The NFL, owners, and management will not do it on their own.

I keep coming back to this Jezebel article that compares the Ray Rice 2-game suspension for knocking his then-gf unconscious to another player getting 16 games for pot smoking in the offseason.
The comparative punishments are offensive and shocking and absolutely show the league's priorities and complete disregard for women/children/basically anyone not on an NFL roster or management.
It's the same with Peterson - they suspend him one game, then bring him back, until the sponsors and public outcry forces them to take further action. The NFL has now instituted a stricter minimum suspension for domestic violence, but seriously, what fucking assholes.
I am most shocked by the fact that he could do this after his other son was killed by abuse.
But he didn't know him.
(People keep pointing this out like it makes a difference.)

I don't think you can make this kind of assumption about relative "badness" of the offenses here. Josh Gordon, the guy who was suspended for the whole season for pot, got such a long suspension because it was not his first substance abuse offense. (Also, it looks like his suspension's been downgraded to 10 games.) Doesn't change the fact that the NFL is tone deaf on the Ray Rice and AP issues, but I just wanted to clarify.
I'm sorry but this does not matter. In school, discipline polices always stated severity of the punishment could be adjusted as warranted. There's no obligation to punish less because it was their first time hitting a woman and they should get a few more chances. There shouldn't be, at least.

I absolutely think it is telling - and the league finally making some changes to it's system and recognizing the dissonance in punishments, shows that they finally got a clue that it is unacceptable to sponsors, the public and (some) fans to have such variation in relative "badness" of the offense vs. the likely punishments.
I'm not saying the Jezebel article is the literary treatise on the whole situation, it is only one example, but other articles with more detailed research into many incidents show the same pattern. Sometimes it takes this kind of comparison to illustrate a point.
It is true that in the past, they could automatically lay down a harsher sentence for substance abuse (recreational and PED) because it was written as such into the code of conduct whereas domestic violence/abuse/other criminal personal conduct was not.
And, as @ColeRose pointed out, it's also reflective of society and our justice system. The complicated nature of abuse means that many abusers are not charged or convicted (for abuse) and the NFL can lean back on the justice system because it is a safe-ish legal haven for them. It has also been relatively free from public scrutiny and outcry that would cause them to change their policies until Ray Rice was caught on videotape and the full videotape was released.

I'm still shaking my head over his statement that he didn't realize hitting his kid with a stick would cause injury.
A switch is hard to describe. It's not a stiff stick like a branch. It is pliable, which is probably how he got him in the scrotum. There is a possibility that a switch would like a scratch because they can be bumpy, for lack of a better word, but there is no reason in the world that they should bruise or have visible marks a week later.
A switch is a twig. It's hard enough to knowingly cause injury. And, since it was used on him as a child, he knew that.
He spanked out of anger and lost control. He admitted as much in a text to the mom.
The child also had leaves in his mouth. AP said he didn't know he was injuring the child because the child didn't cry.
WHAT THE MOTHER FUCKING FUCK?
The child had leaves in his mouth. And note the incident with the other child in June 2013 where AP blamed the kid for not sitting there and taking it. I am sure that child never heard "I'll give you something to cry about" (sarcasm).
Without going in to too much detail, the switch didn't cause cuts like that because it 'scratched' the kid...it's a whip. If you use a whip with too much force, it will cause the skin to split.

Yup. Think of a lashings or whippings from way back when.

This is going to be antecdotal, but when I was switched as a child, I did get scratches. My skin never split. Maybe that's why I can only imagine the scratches and described it that way. Split skin makes it so much worse.
Incidentally, if you whip a horse hard enough to cause cuts like that, you will be disqualified from competition, suspended from whatever association you belong to, and face criminal charges. So the double standard is both disgusting and heartbreaking.

Did you see the pics? They were not scratches.
I did not. Honestly, I'm afraid they would make me sick. I was not trying to describe the pictures. I was trying to describe what a switch is since it's not really a stick or a branch. My point was that he must have used extreme force to leave cuts and bruises a week late since, in my experience, switches do not leave marks that severe a week late. That's all.
Don't look at them. I accidentally saw them buried in an article. I knew you weren't arguing the severity of the beating. I can see how my quoting seemed that way, though.
Also, why are those pictures public? Shouldn't they be confidential since he is a child?
They look like police evidence photos (you can see someone's gloved hands, and they are holding up a guide to show the scale of how large the cuts/marks are). Presumably, the police released them vs them being leaked, IDK. They only show the child's legs and waist, so possibly they released them since the child can't be identified from the photos?
