My body is starving...literally!

I went to my 27 week appointment, baby is doing fantastic! But my doc informed me that not only did I lose 4 pounds since my last visit, but now I have ketones in my urine. I test for GD next week, but my doctor doesn't think it's that. My doctor told me that I was starving myself. Truth is that I think my doctor right. I'm either craving what I can't have at the moment so I don't eat or my stomach feels full after a few bites. Im going to have to start force feeding myself four times a day. Just wanted to vent and see if anyone else is going thru this.

What do you mean when you say you're 'craving what you can't have at the moment'?

I was wondering the same thing...if you 'can't have it' because it's not healthy, just eat it! Being pregnant is about eating all the things. If not, I'm doing it wrong.

  • Sometimes I really want McDonalds fries, but I'm at work and can't get to McDonalds. Sometimes I want sweet rolls, but unable to find one near me. I work a lot of hours (12-15 hours a day) and I'm often confined to eating at the two restaurants that are close to me, so I'm not late getting back.

Start bringing lots of snacks! I can understand not wanting to be late coming back to work. The vending machine was my bff and my nemesis because it was all junk. Do what you have to do to get the calories in.

  • @eora3 Clearly my doctor told me that I needed to eat healthy. I think everyone knows that. What I said was that my stomach feels bloated or full after a few bites. I cannot eat full meals, because my stomach hurts.

Due to that, I guess I've become selective with my food. Thanks ladies for your honesty. Trust me, I know I need to eat. Just wanted to vent and was trying to see if anyone else was going through what I'm experienced.

This happens to me sometimes too. I have days im starving and days nothing is appealing and i get too full too quick. Try splitting the meal in half. Like half sandwich now, half sandwish in an hour or 2. Just try several small meals through the day.

I can't eat full meals either- if I do holy heartburn. So honestly I eat a few bites of something every hour or so...believe you me, I'm not having ANY issues gaining. But yea, it blows when you can't have what you want, but I promise you'll start feeling better if you're fueling your body.

  • I seconded the grazing suggestion. I totally get it...I get too full too quick and feel awful for hours after. I've been eating 6 smaller meals and snacks and it's helping so I don't ever feel stuffed.

Also, someone told me early in pregnancy to always have snacks on you and I haven't left the house without an apple or granola bar in 5 months.
  • I feel full most of the time, I think baby is growing vertically in my body instead of my stomach growing out. But I take healthy snacks to work and eat through out the day. Breakfast? I am never hungry, but I eat because I know baby needs it. The baby will take what it needs from you, but what happens when there is nothing left of you for baby? You have to think you are no longer getting nutrients for one person, but two.

  • Some days I'm super hungry and some days I only eat 1-2 meals with snacks. Just make sure that you are eating enough calories and staying hydrated! That's kinda scary.
  • @jengallagher‌ That's exactly what I need are to find my staple foods. I honestly ate all the time pre-pregnancy. I was an average weight. This is all new territory for me; even I'm perplexed by it all. Thank you for mentioning the hcg levels. I will look that up to see if that's what is dwindling my appetite.
  • Pack a lunch. And snacks.

  • Start eating protein and fats when you do eat! Avocado, nuts, nut butters, whole eggs, full fat yogurt! You don't need to eat large quantities to get plenty of fats and calories from these foods. Also, get a milkshake or some ensure type drinks. Your body needs calories and so does the baby for good brain development.
  • My Dr recommended Ensure shakes for extra calories. I started drinking them this week, so hopefully the scale will look better at my appt next week.
  • I am almost certain I will never have this problem!
  • If I don't eat, I get so sick I dry heave. Not cool.
I can't eat a lot and get full super fast thanks to LO taking up more room.

Like PPs, find those staple foods. Mine have changed through out pregnancy. Now I have oatmeal, yogurt, nectarines, and starbursts near by. (I know starburst isn't a real food but it is in my world)

I totally get this. The first trimester I gained a ton instantaneously because I was so hungry. But now it's like everything gives me heartburn and indigestion the moment I smell it. I've been living off of thick soups, peanut butter sandwiches and apples. Just gotta force it down some days. Even if you dont want a certain food for lunch, get it anyway and pick at it all day. Or bring some snacks with you.

Shakes are a great way to add extra calories and protein. You can look up some that use peanut butter or protien power too. Good luck!

  • You came to the right place for help. D14 knows how to eat! Like pp said, when you do eat something, make sure it is high calorie. Like full fat yogurt, pb on toast, avocados. That way, you get more calories per bite. Also, spread out your meals. Start at eight am and eat a little every hour, even if it's just a bite or two. You will be hitting your calorie mark in no time!

You have an addiction problem @MissChristineMarie‌ hahahaha
I'm not ashamed. I had a PB&J and a peanut butter spoon today. And plus also... when I made MH a PB sandwich for work tomorrow, I *might* have licked the knife. ;) Peanut butter ice cream tonight sounds amazing too. Ice cream and peanut butter = my best friends. NO SHAME.

Best thing ever- Black Raspberry ice cream drizzled with Peanut Butter. Nuke the PB for a bit to make it runny. Its amazing.

  • I don't understand why people even comment if they are going to be rude. She's being honest about something she's going through. I feel fairly confident we all have done something during our pregnancies that wasn't the absolutely most prefered thing. He who casts stones...

Anyway!! I work in a place that's difficult to leave so I can empathize for sure. I also have a toddler and a husband who travels way more than he is home. So by the time everything is done throughout the day, I often realize I haven't eaten nearly what I should. Sometimes you just get going and lose track of sitting down and having a full meal. I try (not always successful) to pack some snacks like pre-sliced apples and Brie bites, hummus and carrots and etc to take to work. Fresh market and publix both have awesome insulated "coolers" and they keep stuff cool for a decent period of time. Maybe that would help? Also, Greek yogurt will give you lots of protein and if you mix it with PB or Nutella it is a great, sweet fruit spread. Now that you're aware of what is going on and make plans, I am sure it will get easier. Everyone is doing their best - so maybe we should all try to cap some of the judgement.
  • I don't understand. If you only have so many choices close by work, why not pack a lunch? Your baby needs you to start eating.

  • I don't have a problem eating but I do want to make sure I'm getting the extra calories and protein I need to grow twins so I've been drinking ensure high protein shakes. Give that a try if you can't eat anything else.

  • Blah white Knights. Nobody is being rude, you cannot control how people are going to answer on an Internet forum, this is not a support group and we don't give puppies and rainbows. That being said, almost every post was helpful for OP. It's hard for some of us to comprehend not eating because if you've spent any time lurking you'll see how often we talk about food.

I am getting caught up on the replies but I don't see anyone being rude.

  • Maybe I'm an overly sensitive person so I apologize if what I am reading is different than what others are reading. But I think the way some people phrase things sounds a lot more "you're being ridiculous" than "here is some help." There have been a ton of helpful posts! And there have been people who didn't post anything helpful but did say things that I would take as rude. Again, clearly I am just misreading comments so here's my apology for that.
  • People need a reminder on the definition of rude.

  • Let me clarify by stating that I do know the definition of rude, and no such thing was demonstrated when reading back all the comments!
  • Nope pretty sure I said "sounds a lot like" and not this is verbatim what people are saying. I'm not getting into the whole back and forth this person said this exact thing and I believe it is rude because of this reason. Other people stated their opinions and I stated mine. I apparently take comments differently than others and that's fine. Sorry to offend anyone.
  • It was probably also my comment about not understanding cuz I need all of the food. I'm serious though, I cannot comprehend not being hungry I was serious. I am always hungry.

  • I'll try to make this as nice as possible, since offering advice is rude now apparently.. :-/

OP, I struggled with nausea/vomiting for the first half of my pregnancy (still have little surprise phases of it now and again) and my appetite suffered for it. Some snacky type things that work well for me are:
    Veggies, pita chips, and hummus
Protein bars (MacroBars peanut butter ones are my favorite!)
Almond or coconut yogurt with granola
    Mixed nuts or trail mix
Homemade muffins (you can do protein muffins for an extra kick of nutrition)

Good luck! Hopefully you can use some of the suggestions the ladies made to fill the gaps in your diet.
  • Who was it awhile ago who said that their husband turned the words to "rude" into a song about giant pregnancy boobs? I now sing it like that every time.

And I'm with @MissChristineMarie‌ on the peanut butter thing. Mix and match it with different stuff and you've got an easy at work meal.

Omg I forgot about that I heard that song as boobs for weeks afterwards, who was that?
