October 2014 Moms

I know we have had plenty of hemorrhoid discussions but....

I never imagined they could be so painful. I always heard that there was some itching and a little pain, but I can't sit or stand or anything. The pain is terrible. Is this normal?

This just developed during the day yesterday, but feels like it is getting worse, not better. I've read the past threads with suggestions on relieving some of the pain, but is there anything I can do while at work? Obviously sitz bath, ice packs, etc won't work in the office and I'm trying to be discreet so I don't have to discuss the source of my pain with my coworkers.

Also, I couldn't find much reliable info about how to get rid of a hemorrhoid (in past threads or by googling). I found info on how to try to avoid them and how to get relief from them, but don't know what to do to get this to go away ASAP.

Is it really feasible to do either of those while at work? Won't I leak? :-S

Oh and @Nicb13‌ are the medicated wipes Tucks or something else?

I developed them for the first time about 2 weeks ago.  Personally, I found they were painful for the first couple days and now they are just mildly itchy at times.  I found Tucks pads  and Preparation H to be mildly helpful.  At home, I try to take a bath, sit on a donut pillow, and change positions often.

I have not had any luck getting the hemorrhoids to go away.  At this point, I have resigned myself to having them until after delivery and recovery.  :-(  Which hopefully will be soon.
Ugh, not going away at all sounds terrible, but it's a bit of a relief to know that your pain went away after a few days. I think I could tolerate itching, but the pain right now is pretty unbearable.
  • Ditto tucks and a cooling hemorrhoid gel (preparation H makes one).  Tucks also makes to go ones in little packets.  I used to take those to work so I could use them when I went potty.

  • I had no luck with preparation h at all, it felt like it made it worse. Earth Mama makes a Mama Bum Balm that is organic and smells good, it's a little minty/cooling which was a shock the first time I tried it but it is the only thing that gives me relief. When this issue goes away the salve is also good for rashes, sunburn, bug bites, and razor burn. I also had to stash my thongs for the time being and I've started using the bidet/diaper sprayer to rinse after using the bathroom, then gently patting dry with toilet paper.

  • Oh god, I hope you don't have what I did. Thrombosed ones. If the pain is excruciating, and they are big and hard, I'd check with your OB about lancing. (Hopefully it's not the case!) Otherwise, like everyone else said...tucks, very warm sitz baths at least twice a day, analsalm(sp?) good luck!

Oh no...don't tell me this! Lancing sounds incredibly painful!
  • Sorry. Knew I should've kept my mouth shut! I've just been so scarred by the experience that I wanted to get the warning out to all moms to be to take care of their bums! Lol. Seriously though, if it gets unbearable don't be too embarrassed to bring it up to the dr.(like I was) and wait too long. Mine were pretty severe, and just downright debilitating by the time I got help.

  • I had one pop out a few weeks back and was sure it wouldn't go away for the rest of the pregnancy.  I used the generic preparation H and made sure I was getting plenty of water and fiber.  I used the Prep H morning, night, and after bowel movements.  The hemorrhoid is pretty much gone.  I definitely realize I'm in the minority here and super lucky - and rest assured, I know they'll come back during delivery and after, but thought I'd let you know there's some hope...however slim!

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I've already been trying to up my water intake today and also trying to figure out how to add in some extra fiber today. I went and bought some medicated wipes on my lunch break, but have a ton of pain right now after a BM (sorry if that's TMI!). I really hope this calms down soon. And I'm really worried now that if I'm in this much pain just from some hemorrhoids, how in the world am I going to handle the pain of childbirth?!?!? :((
  • Have you tried this move? T says it helps.

  • Um no, not yet....perhaps I'll try that next [-(
  • I called and spoke with the on call nurse last night because things seemed to be getting worse, not better. She basically told me that since I'm not constipated, it is likely caused but the weight of the baby and therfore will probably not go away until after I give birth.

I've been using the Tucks pads with some Prep H cream, but it doesn't really seem to help. I did two sitz baths last night and have attempted to "push it back in" as recommended by PPs and also my best friend who is a post partum RN. That only helps for a minute or two and then it re-emerges :-( I also tried an ice pack, which was little help. Yesterday I tried Prep H wipes which seemed to only make things hurt more.

I am really struggling here at work today and just want to go home and cry, but I can't take any more time off (with my upcoming maternity leave and only working here for 6 months), so I'm trying to make it through the day. It just makes it worse knowing that I potentially have to deal with this for another 5 weeks...and maybe longer.

Sorry for being so whiney, but this is seriously some of the worst pain I've ever experienced.
    :((
  • @Kaylajade8911‌ - I'm sure you're right that it will be worse, but there are epidurals for that pain! Also with labor there is typically an end in sight...and it doesn't usually last 5 weeks or more. Not to mention, when I'm in labor I won't be sitting at work all day in pain, trying to avoid explaining the reason for all of my wincing and slow movements to my coworkers.

Or can I get an epidural for hemorrhoids? :-?

When I was going through my ordeal with the clotted ones I was researching the hell out of them online and I actually found not one, not two, but several posts/messages/blogs/whatever from pregnant women, or women who had recently given birth, who had said that dealing with the thrombosed hemorrhoids were much worse than going through labor AND C-section recovery. I wouldn't say that it was quite as painful as labor, but the pain was up there. Can't speak to the C-section recovery comparison.

Isn't there anything else your doctor can recommend or do? I know you spoke to a nurse but maybe you should mention it to your OB at your next check up.

Most likely these hemi's will get worse after labor from the pushing so you'll want to treat them now as best as you can. Also, I second the stool softener suggestion. I take 1-2 every day so I don't get backed up. It's helped a lot.

I will definitely mention it at my next check up, but unfortunately that's not for another week. I'll also check into getting a stool softener. I don't really feel like I'm constipated or straining to have a BM or anything but I guess it couldn't hurt.

For everyday use I've found the earth mama bottom balm to work the best.
I've had bad roids since before my first pregnancy, from many years of digestive issues but they were never as bad as when after I got pregnant. When they got to the point of being rock hard and painful I got a rx cream from my doc and seriously got overnight relief. Unfortunately for me, mine don't ever go away. I use baby wipes when having a bm, have to carry them with me everywhere, TP always causes flare ups.
Had a csection with my first and didn't have painful roids till after the nurse gave me a suppository (never had one before), they said I needed a bm before I could go home. It was the worst I've ever had after that.
I hope it gets better for you and they go away after delivery.

Eta: oh n be careful of stool softeners, it could actually "hurt" if you get the wrong kind. If you're not constipated they're not necessary. All you can do right now is avoid flare ups. Drink lots of water, eat fiber enriched foods and use baby wipes not TP when going.

  • Thanks....I just ordered from Amazon. I was hoping I could find some at a store or somehow get it today, but looks like I'll have to wait.
  • Sorry for the late reply @ashleyvictoria

I'm glad kaniela17 checks her notifications more often than I do! Yes, Amazon and the EMAB site work, but also check to see if any local parenting or natural health boutiques in your area carry it. There's a natural parenting store down the street from me that carries it, there's also a few vitamin shops and even a Target that has it (not all, just one in my area). Check https://earthmamaangelbaby.com/pages/store-locator if you'd like to find a local shop that can keep you stocked up in the future, I hate ordering online so I get it. On that note, I also love their stretch mark oil and I ordered some of their postpartum bottom spray which I'm curious to try, it's supposed to help soothe everything down there, especially if you get a tear.
