Breastfeeding

Milk just came in, breasts still firm after feed, am I emptying breasts??

Hi ladies! My son is 4 days old and my milk has come in. He's having adequate wet and dirty diapers so I know he's getting enough. He nurses about 10-20 minutes a side, both sides, every 1-3 hours. I keep him on a side until he falls asleep/ slows down then I switch, but the breast is not soft and it leaks milk while he nurses the other side.

Does this mean it's not empty? Is that a stupid question? If not, how can I get him to empty the breast? Do I need to offer both breasts at a feed? I had terrible engorgement and mastitis with my first so I don't want to go there again.
Thanks ladies.

  • Generally when a lo appears to be done nursing you offer the other side. If lo does not nurse for long or at all start with that side for the next feeding.

  • I rarely had noticeable changes in breast firmness. It's totally nerve racking though, just hang in there!
