I have decided this time around we are skipping the infant carrier and just going straight into the convertible car seat. But I have no idea of where to start. I know some are not as good for newborns. We would like one that would do extended rear-facing specifically, but also will allow this little to grow into it for many years. Thank you for your help.

Yup. DS is Tommy Pickles! Nothing like living with an escape artist. Just another cloth diapering, baby wearing mama.
The Chicco Nextfit, Graco 4Ever, Graco Headwise/Size4Me/MySize/Contender are all excellent seats for ERF and will fit newborns.
What car will the seat be going in? Depending on your buget, Clek is releasing a new Foonf and Fllo with an infant insert (I believe 1/15 is the release).

To add to the other recommendations: I believe the new Britax Clicktight convertibles coming out will also fit newborns well, and the Boulevard and Advocate models will be excellent for ERF (highest height limit on market currently). They are expensive seats, but super easy seatbelt install and fairly compact front to back.
definitly look at the Car Seats for the Littles links provided above. Can also join their FB group. They are the best carseat resource that I know of. The group is moderated by Certified Car Seat Techs & they know their stuff. Parents help out as well, but our info isn't always as accurate.

We have a Maxi Cosi Pria (I don't think I saw it mentioned?) with the tiny fit system which works really well with even little newborns. We liked it enough that we're going to use the same for this next baby.
I second the Maxi Cosi Pria 70. It's super safe and with the tiny fit system, it will fit infants from 4 pounds (I think...my coffee hasn't kicked in all the way yet). I have only used this seat with my toddler, but we choose it because we were going to use it straight away. Had I not received an infant seat for free, we would have used the Maxi Cosi from birth and been super happy with it.
I do not think the radian fits a newborn well at all.
I can't imagine arriving somewhere with a sleeping baby and having to wake him/her to get out of the car. Letting a sleeping baby sleep is reason enough to consider getting an infant seat!
@ASmallWonder radians are very hit or miss with newborns. The smaller straps help, but the strap hight and the width of the chest clip make it a poor fit for some babies and those are things that you can't change.

True but the above statement was made as an across the board statement and is false. It can fit newborns but to do so, would need to have the above items so I was just correcting that broad statement. All seats have to fit correctly and not all do for all children, that is true, but it is incorrect that the Radian, as a rule, can't work for newborns (tech)
I know this is not the route a lot of parents choose. I just HATED using an infant seat. I struggled carrying it, as I have back problems. So getting in and out of vehicle sucks for me personally. Yes it sucks to move a sleeping baby, but we will make it work for us.
Thank you for the feed back. After looking more my top two are the Maxi Cosi and the Graco 4ever. Hoping to see both in person and test in our car before we purchase. I do not want to use a seat that we have to use anything to get proper fit that does not come with the car seat.

Every baby is different, but we found that moving DS wasn't a big deal. If he woke up when we moved him out of his car seat, he quickly fell back asleep in the Moby wrap, his stroller, etc. Granted, once he was past the newborn stage he really didn't fall asleep in the car on short trips around town anyway since we timed trips around nap time. I don't regret not having an infant seat at all, and plan to skip it for a future baby as well.

I don't think anyone said that it doesn't work for newborns. Unless I missed it. Someone basically said (and I agree) that all of the seats out there, radians may not provide the best fit.

(^ that seat is sold under many names depending on the store. They are all the same except for some minor cosmetic differences. At the very end of the review it discusses this.)
