4 month seizure

LO went in for her 4 month vacs yesterday and took them like a champ. Everything was perfect. All day she was her normal smiling self- no discomfort, no fussing. I put LO down at 8 and at 10 I hear her moving around. She normally wakes and makes some noises and moves around but my mom-intuition felt something was not right. I went in and LO had her eyes open with a blank look and was stiff and shaking. Her breathing was short and gaspy and kind if labored. We quick picked her up (we didn't know what was wrong at this point) and put her in the car and raced to the hospital. After checking her blood and a neuro consult, the doctor thinks her shots may have caused a seizure, which is an unlikely side effect of the tdap. Going to follow up with an EEG and her doctor this week since everything else looked ok at the hospital. LO is back to her happy grinning self but my goodness it was a scary night!!

  • Wow. I didn't even realize that was a possibility. I'm glad your little one is ok. I don't know how I would function in that type of scenario.

  • Whoa that's so scary! Thank goodness for mothers intuition. I'm glad she's doing okay now and I hope her EEG comes back normal!
  • Thanks ladies! I had no idea that it could be a rare side effect. I don't know about y'all's doctors but mine never went over any side effects besides fever. I guess it's a wake up call to do my own research and don't assume everything will be perfect. I'm still pro-vaccinations but has really opened my eyes.
  • So sorry you had to go through that! Glad to hear she is doing well now and hope she continues to do so!
  • @comicsans‌ I'm not sure. We've been thinking that too. Calling our pediatrician Monday to let her know what happened and discuss an EEG. LO did fine on her first tdap so hopefully it was a fluke. We ordered a video monitor now so I'm sure I'll be watching LO like a hawk all night. Last night she was only in her crib for a few hours before she was back with me. This mom stuff is hard!
  • So scary! Glad she's doing okay! Hugs to you, I can't even imagine!
  • Oh my goodness! I'm so glad she is doing better! Fx for a good EEG! Hang in there mama!

  • Omg how scary! Glad she is doing well now. Was it a febrile seizure from a fever spike? One of our friends ' daughter had a febrile seizure from a rash that caused a temp spike but she is perfectly fine now.

  • This seriously is the scariest thing I've ever heard. Especially since all of our LO have had this shot! Omg I am so glad shes ok!! Please keep us posted poor mama and poor baby girl good thing you acted on that intuition!

Don't think so. She didn't have a fever from what I could tell. Granted I didn't take her temp but just by touch she wasn't hot. We thought this too when we consulted Dr. Google once we got to the hospital. She had no fever once we were there and they took her temp.
  • Oh my good was that is terrifying! I'm so glad she is ok though and I will be looking out for any side effects next week when LO goes for his shots!

  • My LO just had a seizure on Thursday. I just happened to be up helping my other DD in the bathroom, I came into the room and heard her stirring and went to cover her up and she too was tensed in a ball, shaking, and staring off to the right. We went to the ER, the did a CT scan, which was normal. However, my middle daughter had seizures as well when she was an infant, so we were transferred to Children's hospital where she had an MRI and EEG, all which came back normal, so we were diagnosed with Infantile Seizures. If she has any more, they'll put her on meds.

I'm sorry, you had to experience this, the EEG is a very simple test, not painful at all, just annoying. I hope all is clear.

Thinking of you- how frightening !
I am glad to hear your little ones are okay. Please keep us posted!
  • DD had her shots today. here's the info pedi gave me on DTaP. seizures occur in 1 out of 14,000 kids. OP I would definitely make sure your pedi knows LO had a seizure and discuss it before the next set of shots.

  • @mollynicole214‌ Did you have the EEG done yet?

Thank you @MK1013‌, my LO ended up having two more seizures Sunday morning, so they put her on anti-seizure meds.

  • @CamrynnsMommy‌ what does your DDs seizures look like? Do they know why she gets them or causes them? I know nothing about seizures. We have no family history of so I'm learning as I go.
The hospital called this evening to schedule the EEG, of course while I was driving and I missed the call. We will schedule it tomorrow. LO threw up twice today which she has never done. Hope it's not another symptom/side effect of something. Luckily no fever and no other problems.
  • @mollynicole214‌ Her seizures are grand mal, I videotaped them and had my pedi watch, she agreed they were grand mal.

Basically, her hands are clenched in fists and she holds them parallel to her body, she brings her knees up to her stomach, her eyes are rolled back and to the right and she shakes in a repetitive motion. She completely checks out, not like loss of consciousness, but doesn't blink, doesn't respond, etc.

    Please keep us posted!

Thanks for explaining what hers look like. Definitely helpful to know what to look at. During my moment of terror I wasn't really paying attention to details like that so if was hard to answer questions in the ER. I'll certainly post an update after her next appointment.
