So I interviewed a babysitter this morning. It all went well. She's studying to be a nurse. When I asked for references, she gave me a two names and numbers. One there was no answer and it didn't go to a voicemail like an office or business would have. At the other, a woman answered like she was just answering at home saying "hello?" No answering like she was at work. Usually you would answer saying something about where you were calling. She listed both of these people as supervisors at hospitals. It made me kind of suspicious so a quick google search revealed that the woman I talked to is her mother, different last names though. This doesn't sit well with my gut but what do you make of it? I guess I've answered own question on what to do, but listing your mother as your reference, then she answers as an employer seems deceitful. Maybe she worked for her mother? WDYT?
Re: hiring a babysitter
If she is a stranger to you, perhaps interview someone else and see where that goes.
I wouldn't mind at all talking to the mother of a potential babysitter. Mothers will (almost) always tell you what their child is really like.
Oh, I see. That's weird.
If you really like her, I would probably call her out on it and see what the deal is. Maybe she doesn't have much work experience, and she thought that sounded better? If she just seems ok, then just forget about it.
