My husband and I want to become pregnant after February of this coming year. I've never been pregnant. I'm prepared for the horrors of pregnancy (if any), but I cannot get over my fear of giving birth. I have an idea in my head that giving birth will be the worst pain...ever? I'm starting to think I have a phobia! lol. I have a low pain tolerance. I'm even considering c-section over vaginal birth because I think it will seem less painful. Any comments and advice will be greatly appreciated!
Re: Pain of Birthing Process
A c-section is a major surgery and while the process may be less painful (because you will be numbed) the recovery from a c-section is longer and more painful in general than with a vaginal birth.
Read up and educate yourself. A c-section may be numbed, but there can be significant and long-lasting pain afterwards.
It's not an uncommon fear, but it is a little based in the unknown. Obviously, it can't be too bad, or the human race wouldn't have made it this far. I would recommend a few books, Fearless Pregnancy among them. Hypnobirthing, the Mongan Method, as well. They both address fear surrounding pregnancy and birth and Hypnobirthing explains how fear can actually increase the pain you perceive in childbirth.
There are plenty of options for pain relief these days. I personally am opting for an unmedicated birth, but you don't have to do that yourself. Learn about your pain management options - there are many. Learn about some natural birthing techniques, which can help you cope with the pain until the point where you can get your pain meds. A little pain or fear of pain isn't a good reason not to have a baby, if that is important to you.

Yes, childbirth is likely the worst pain you'll ever feel in your life. And a side note....those epidurals don't always work.
Have fun
Childbirth is also pain with a purpose and pain with an end. It's different than say, a broken leg. Not necessarily pleasant. Not something you hope to experience frequently. But pain that disappears pretty quickly after delivery.
It's also worth mentioning that in addition to pain after a c-section, it's a riskier birth, carrying much higher maternal and fetal death risks than vaginal delivery. It's worth making sure you are fully informed about that. They can save lives, and thank god for it, but it's not something to be undertaken lightly or simply out of fear.

You should research like crazy any and every possible option for giving birth. Being more informed will set your mind at ease and let you make the choices that are right for you.
I am sure the pain is bad and the labor is called labor for a reason, but women do this over and over. Our bodies are made for this.
