Utopia

Anyone watch this show? It's on Fox.

15 strangers are brought to a plot of land with a shelter, lake, farm, and some cows and chickens and live there for 1 year. The goal is to create a self-sustainable utopian society.

Anywho, one of the women on the show is pregnant! They have little to no food and only dirty(ish) water. Am I the only one that is a little confused/maddened/curious by her decision to participate? I mean, I know people were pregnant back in the good ole days and lived like this, but infant mortality rates were much higher back then. Plus, they only got to pack items that the entire group decided on that fit into a bin and she was hiding her pregnancy at that point so we know she didn't pack any prenatals in the bin! I'll admit though, her pregnancy has me intrigued enough to continue watching the show despite the annoying bickering and utter stupidity. I just want to see how she gives birth there and cares for the infant afterwards.

Anyone else watch this show or have an opinion on the pregnant woman being there for a year?

**And I hope this hasn't been discussed already. I searched "utopia" and found nothing.

Re: Utopia

  • I heard about this show on the radio yesterday and forgot to record it. It sounds like a huge version of survivor! Really interesting idea.

Its pretty much a clusterf*ck of people speaking over one another and arguing about everything humanly possible. They definitely picked personalities that were completely opposite (for Ex: A Pentacostal pastor, a polyamorous woman, and a few anti-religion, off the grid, cosmic energy eating hippie types) in order to promote drama. I'm thinking it will get better once they sort out the beginning stuff, but I really just want to see the pregnant woman.

  • I definitely watched the first one and it reminds me of Big Brother for the drama factor.

I'm with @lewispm in that I want to see if they're really gonna let that lady give birth in Utopia!!
  • I watched the first episode. There's more drama there than in the last two seasons of Big Brother combined! My DH said "Geez, whoever is manning the sensor button really lucked into some job security!"
I think they are going to let her give birth inside the confines. They do have some sort of doctor and a woman who was training to be a vet tech so there is some kind of medical knowledge in there.
The blonde survival prepper is driving me nuts already! All she does is cry and whine about stuff not being her way (which is the only way, of course).
Do you know what kind of doctor she is? She seems kind of kooky and talked about how she is searching for a tantric sex partner so I'm curious. And the blonde lady is BSC! I want to punch her through the screen sometimes. She is a cougar too and seems out for that tall guy!

  • What?! There's a pregnant woman?! I saw someone already got taken away because of dehydration, and she wants to be pregnant and have the baby out there?! That's absolute nuts and I cannot believe fox would allow that!

I've watched every season of survivor and even though they boil their water, they all come home with nasty parasites and all sorts of awful things happening with their bodies. I just can't believe someone would want to subject their unborn baby to that!

I'm really hoping she's not really pregnant and just trying to start drama.

  • I've watched and wow some crazies on there. Great concept for a show. Hopefully it'll pan out. I'd say they need to impose some punishments, like you stomp on our cans of pineapples then we stomp on your foot that did the damage...with a hammer;) haaaa. The pregnant girl has my attention. Let's see where this goes.

  • I'm pretty sure they'll take her out to give birth (they knew when they cast her and have liability lawyers up the wazoo I'm sure). The water isn't dirty, it's just regular tap water. The blonde crazy lady wanted a water filter to filter the fluoride out!

  • I watch modern family reruns at 7 and 7:30 so I happened to catch the first few minutes of this last night. I had to turn it off immediately. Not my kind of TV show.

I did catch the pregnant lady and was kind of curious to see how that played out. But not curious enough to tune in every week.

On a semi related note, I have a friend who is a camera woman and just finished shooting "Born in the Wild." All the births she shot went according to plan but I asked her what would happen if things went awry. She said there was some kind of medical professional on site - not an OB or midwife - but that they really were not supposed to intervene. I thought this was totally cray.

One of the women acted as her own midwife and coached her husband through the birth. In the middle of the Alaskan wild. On one hand I'm like "hell yeah, we are women hear us roar!" And on the other I'm like "this woman is fucking BSC!"

  • I always thought the show would be a lot more fascinating if there was a paintball gun that looked like a real gun stuck up high in a nearby tree. How long would it stay? Would it be a group decision to get it down, or rogue action? Who would be the rogue? So many questions!

  • I saw it for the first time last night, and I wanted to strangle the "ex-con" - holy fuck how annoying is he?

  • When that guy brought up only eating twice a day I got pissed because they didn't know the girl was pregnant yet and were arguing with her about it. I was like, "Nnnoooo she has to eat more than twice a day!!" Then I went and gorged myself on chips and M&M's while watching the drama haha.

  • RE: the pregnant woman:
The "doctor" is a holistic doctor, for what that's worth. And the vet assistant is very young and I doubt knows anything about pregnancy or birth. I'm sure pregnant girl is going to be monitored off the camera, and they will either send someone in or take her out when delivery time comes. Should be interesting though if she stays on the show that long!
