Slightly but im 10 minutes from the hospital and my husband can drive in anything so im not totally worried. Im more worried nobody will be able to come stay with/pick up dd.
This is my concern. My nearest family lives 1.5 hrs away. And dont travel in snow well. And yeah, I live in the Philadelphia area so we do get snow. My hospital is 20 minutes away perfect weather and traffic. I hate snow.
@MrsRoy07 I'm also in the suburbs of Buffalo so I'm with you!
One day it could be 40/50 in February and the next day could be a snowstorm. I'm definitely nervous about going into labor during a snowstorm.
I was looking into another ob/gyn office but that hospital is a 20 minute drive, while the other one is like, an 8 minute drive and that's where my current ob delivers. If it's a snowstorm, I don't want to have a far drive.
I was actually going to say I'm happy to be in Austin but our past few winters have been a bit crazy. We definitely don't get snow or things like that but black ice has been pretty intense. Other than the fact our roads aren't designed for weather like that, people here don't know how to drive with those types of conditions.
I'm in LA and 3 minutes from my hospital. But if it's raining.. watch out! We WILL have our own storm theme song on the news and everyone WILL act like it is the end of the world.
We are actually supposed to have a very rainy "winter" which is great because we really, really need it. The year DS was born we had a fairly rainy Feb-April and I did get a little stir-crazy because I didn't like to take him out too much when it was pouring, so I'm a bit concerned about that. But compared to what everyone else deals with, I can't exactly complain.
We go together like a wink and a smile. June 27, 2009
I'm in the snow belt too but DH knows a few snowplow drivers so I figure we will get to the hospital and we have a 4WD truck. I think I'm more worried about it being 40 below when I give birth.
After the crazy winter we had in Ontario last year, I'm pretty freaked out about having a winter baby. It's not even getting there - I'm afraid of there being massive power outages again. No power = no epidural and I'm not ok with that at all.
I am gonna be in MN too so I know what you mean! I am prepared to build a bed in a snow bank if necessary. Although the hospital I'm going to is only 10 minutes from my house I still know better than to underestimate the weather
I live pretty close to a hospital however I'm choosing to use a birthing center about 20 mn away. A snow bank sounds nice. It should numb the pain.
I am gonna be at a birthing center too and here's to hoping it will!

I live in the panhandle of Florida, even though I can't relate because of my location. I can understand your worries because I grew up in Michigan and I have witnessed some snow and ice! I hope we have a good friendly winter for you all! I am excited for it not to be hurricane season this time when I'm due. It was prime hurricane season last year when my DD was due. Fortunately, we didn't get anything but I was worried and watched the weather channel like a hawk.
I live in Minnesota too. I've had babies in January and March, so I've BTDT. I do get a little anxious about DH making it home in time. We live in the city but he works in a rural school district 20 miles away. I think I'm more worried about bundling the baby to bring him/her home. 13 years ago when I brought home my January baby it was several degrees below zero (Fahrenheit for you Canadians ). I had him in a big snowsuit. That's a huge no-no these days. I need some better ideas!
Glad we don't have to worry about that in california. We will be lucky to even to drive to the hospital in the rain. Past couple of winters have been dry.

Wow, I haven't even thought about what my baby will wear if it's that cold! Ok, FTM status coming out here... :-/
We are moving to southern AZ in November. Luckily will not have to worry about snow. Now if we stayed in Japan, I would be worried since drivers here drive crazy with just rain and even crazier with snow. Plus the hospital here is 1.5 -2 hrs away on a good day.
Never worried about it. Get a good set of snow tires. After living in the mountains and being an extremely seasoned winter driver, GET GOOD SNOW TIRES. Seriously, driving on snow tires will change your winter life.

For some reason in Texas people think its a good idea to hit the breaks when coming to a big ice patch or frozen over bridge. I just don't understand. It's not the ice that scares me, it's the people.
Sunny California here! I wish we could have a big snowstorm! Haven't seen rain in awhile:( I'm sure Mother Nature will be nice when your little bundle of joy decides to arrive:) congratulations ladies!

SAME! My area (Greater Vancouver) is notorious for bad drivers. We use winter tires (even though we usually only get a dusting) and have a 4x4 but we'd need to be traveling in a rubber bubble to be safe here. Lol, even in the best weather!
Off Topic:
Has everyone picked their hospital already? I haven't even had my first OB appointment or even heard the heartbeat!
I have but I still need to register. It is only 10 minutes away. How many weeks are you?
This is one area in which living in AZ is a win. I'm sure it will be somewhere between 65-75 degrees in Feb. (But seriously guys I've been here for four years and I'm starting to miss snow and winter.)
@Stephanie3615 I'm on Vancouver Island (I'll be having the baby in Nanaimo) but lived in the interior for many years (in Kamloops for a bit, but mostly the east and west Kootenays).
A lot of winter driving is skill, but snow tires definitely help! That being said, the snow here is much wetter and slipperier than the snow we get in cold areas, and that, combined with the inexperience of 95% of the population makes it scary!

I think it is definitely the drivers, but most just don't know what to do in those situations. I try to stay off the roads completely when weather like that occurs. People here know that when it rains a decent amount they know roads will most likely flood. I used to think the whole "turn around, don't drown" thing was kind of ridiculous but it really is a risk. If people were educated the same way about ice and those kinds of conditions there would be a lot less wrecks on the roads in winter weather.
Southern California, so lucky on the snow front, but I do live about twenty miles from the hospital where we will deliver and I have been having serious anxiety about traffic on the day of! Nothing compared to a blizzard though... I'll keep my fingers crossed for a mild winter for all!
I live in Atlanta and they don't prepare for bad weather like that so this past year was absolutely terrible. The whole city shut down basically and it took my husband 17 hours to get home when it usually only takes him 45 minutes. Every major road was closed for days so I'm a little terrified.

Same here. SoCal has the worst traffic during rush hour. Hospital is 30-40 minutes away in normal traffic, but 1-1 1/2 hours during rush hour with all the construction. :-SS
I'm (probably illogically) terrified. My mom had three kids, never labored for longer than two hours (lucky I know).... If it's 6pm and I get stuck at the 55/405/22 jam up....

@Jensoprano82 St Jo's? Right now with insurance I'm stuck at AHMC, but hopefully going to be back at St Jo's for D-day. I loved it last time and won't settle for anything else.

Yup! Snow tires versus everyday street tires, or even chains, makes all the difference in the world. I used to live in Tahoe and the tourists would drop at least 50 IQ points whenever we had even a few inches of snow! I.e. putting chains on the wrong tires, hooking the chains to the fenders and under the tires, buying snow tires and having them put on the wrong side, or just gunning out of some place thinking that they won't be there long enough to lose traction on the ice/snow. Yep I've seen it, and heard it, all.

Hoag is awesome! That is my 2nd choice hospital. My friend said the views are awesome in the recovery rooms. Enjoy!
Oh my. This never crossed my mind until I read this post! I'm in London and it snows pretty much every February. My 6 mile drive to the hospital could be a nightmare!!!
On the flip side it's a perfect time to stay home and hibernate with a newborn.

Blizzard? No, but snow enough to shut these Virginia roads down, yes. Last winter was rough for us, we totaled something like 17 snow days of missed school because of unclear roads. Let's hope the snow hold off with enough time for me to at least make it to the hospital.
F15 January Siggy Challenge: What I'm Looking Forward to After the Babies Arrive Bringing them both home...UPDATE...The girls are home!!! 1/7/15 after 20 days in the NICU!
Yes!!! I'm from California and moved to NW Ohio last November right before that ridiculous polar vortex/winter from hell. Last year we were driving home from a playoff footbal game and went off the highway (everyone including car were fine but SO terrifying)... This is totally my fear. I'm delivering 35 mins away (in good weather) and have already told my guy to start learning how to deliver on the side of the road. He's on board. I am not.
