Winter babies

Is anyone else freaking out at the thought of going into labor during a blizzard? I'm in Minnesota so of course it's been on my mind. Sorry if it wasn't on your mind until you read this :/. *not really freaking but I'm just like please, please Mother Nature have a heart*

  • Oh yea, it's a worry of mine. I live in a suburb of Buffalo, NY, jokingly called the Blizzard capital of the country. ;) February is always a terrible month of weather!! Oh well, you can't control everything

  • I for one am happy about it. Barring the chance of another Snowmageddon in February (I live near DC), the chance of snow days in December and January is a definite perk for this teacher.

  • The night I had DD3 (August), it was raining like crazy. The streets were flooding, and an underpass (goes under RR tracks) completely flooded with water. It was crazy! I thought we'd never make it to the hospital because the roads and traffic was so bad. We get quite a bit of snow in eastern Idaho, but I guess I'm not too worried yet. We'll see how the winter goes Dec/Jan. But given my past pregnancies, I'll probably have LO in Jan at 36 weeks. (Fingers crossed I finally make it to full term this time)

  • I'm in Wisconsin. I'm not concerned about a blizzard (love my four wheel drive Jeep...or we will just hop on a snowmobile). I'm more concerned about another Polar Vortex! From what I hear late in the game you are hot all the time, but with wind chills that cold you have to bundle up! I just feel like the combination of that and labor will be awful!

  • Oh yah GA! Wasn't it your crazy state last year where people freaked and just abandoned their cars? At least we are trained snow veterans here.
  • I am gonna be in MN too so I know what you mean! I am prepared to build a bed in a snow bank if necessary. Although the hospital I'm going to is only 10 minutes from my house I still know better than to underestimate the weather

I am not worried about snow as much as I am about all the sickness going around in February. Having 2 children in school and a newborn freaks this germaphobe the fuck out!!

I live pretty close to a hospital however I'm choosing to use a birthing center about 20 mn away. A snow bank sounds nice. It should numb the pain. ;)
  • Yep! We live in Iowa and have basically been thinking about it since BFP! My BIL lives about a mile away and offered his 4 wheel drive vehicle if needed. Set my mind at ease a little bit!
  • Frigid and 65!!!!! Hilarious! ;)

I live in MD. I had my first child in late January and definitely had those concerns then too. The best tip I got was if it was close to my due date and there was a snow storm threat, get a hotel room down the street from the hospital. We will be keeping this in mind again this time around. Having this as a game plan helps calm my nerves on this topic. If we did have to do this, we would probably take our DD to my in-laws' house just in case.

ETA to add where I live.

Yup, that was about an hour south of me in Atlanta.  We just stayed home like normal southerners......

  • I think after driving in all the worse weather possible this past winter here in MI it doesn't freak me out about this year. Although farmers almanac says this winter is supposed to be colder then last year but doesn't predict more snow. But I'm counting on that being wrong. When you live in a SNOW state ya just deal with it.
  • I live in Southern Ontario Canada. We get horrible winters,It has been my major worry since getting my BFP. The hospital is 50 minutes away and me and DH both hate winter driving. So I'm not looking forward to the driving I will have to do for my appointments either. Luckily one of my good friends is an OB nurse so I can always call her if it is stormy!

  • Yes I have thought about that a few times. I can't wait for the cooler weather to come because I have been so hot, but if we got snow again this year in Ga it may not be good. Last winter Ga was no where near ready for the little bit of snow that  we received and it shut the city down and some lady down here gave birth in the car on the hgwy. We still have car parts(bumpers) on the side of the roads. I hope I don't end up like that. :):| :-S
  • Yea its a concern of ours too. We live in Northern Nevada on the California border and this year has been predicted to be worse than last year. Normally we just get a foot or so of snow, and then by the afternoon its all gone. But knowing my luck and that this year we have a reason for it NOT to be a bad winter, it will be. Oh well! Good thing hubby has a 4WD

  • Well I live in Florida less than a mile from my hospital. So no not really! I'm actually super happy it will not be 100 degrees when I'm 9 months pregnant.

I really hope that doesn't happen to any of you though!

This is me! In LA and it's going to hit 97 this weekend. X(

I had my daughter in July 2011 and I spent the next few months barely leaving the house because it was so uncomfortably hot.

Basically: I hope everyone gets crisp, clear weather in the 50-60s next Feb!

Okay, you all may chuckle because I live in GA, but when we get even the SLIGHTEST flurry, major shutdowns happen.  We live in a really hilly neighborhood and ice is a bigger concern here.  I'm definitely terrified of this!
Did you hear about the lady who had her baby in the car (assisted by DH and a police officer) because she got stuck in the traffic on 285, TRYING to get to the hospital?  No thanks for me!  I just looked it up the other day as to when that storm was, it was one of the last days in January.  Eek!
  • Mainer here! I've thought about the snow but I'm honestly not worried. We drive in the stuff all the time - just take it slow! We are only about 15 minutes from the hospital so with heavy snow I'd figure an hour max. Plus hubby has a plow we can throw on, hah, we will just plow our way there.

Nailed it! What will I do if another ice storm blows through and strands us without power in the cold. Maybe strands is a dramatic word but I had minor freak out about it the other night because our house was without power for a week and we were not prepared for that level of storm.

  • I'm in Wisconsin. This is a very real fear of mine! I'm hoping it doesn't blizzard when I go into labor, but won't be surprised.
  • I live in Texas, so not really any crazy snow storms out here.

I will likely go early January (twins), but STILL!!!  The biggest storm we have had since 1993 was a few years ago on National Championship Monday - January 9.  I recall because my dear Auburn Tigers were playing....and winning......
