FTM here still waiting on LOs arrival. I was wondering though, when you wake for the middle of the night changings and feedings do you feed first then change or change then feed? Do you do the same during the daytime?
I feed then change then feed again. When they're really young falling asleep at the boob is common. Changing them in the middle helps wake them back up to eat some more and hopefully sleep for a longer stretch.
hmmm good question. Lately we've been changing before because we've learned a full belly plus wiggly baby upset at being changed often leads to spit up (from moving around and freaking out). But she's been doing it less often so we may change it up in the near future.
@tromboner I'm doing the same thing. If I don't do the change in the middle of the feeding the little guy just decides to sleep and then wake up an hour later because he's hungry. It's gotten us on a decent 11:30, 2:30, 5, and 9 schedule which I can deal with. I'm just finding I need to completely avoid caffeine after about 2pm or he's up half the night.
We did change then feed because we always had to strip him down because he was a total boob sleeper. Then we would burp, redress and swaddle and offer the other side. I think we will do the same this time.
We've been changing then feeding since the change wakes her up a bit and the feeding puts her to sleep. If she poops again during the feeding, we've been stopping in the middle of the feeding and changing and then finish feeding. We always try to end on feeding so she's relaxed and can go back to sleep easier. It's been working for us.
With the twins we kept to the scn routine of change then feed. There were points where we would have to change, feed, change, feed because they didn't like to stay awake. As they got older, we would feed then change bc they would fill their diapers while nursing.
Change, swaddle and the feed at night. During the day I followed EASY (eat, activity, sleep, you time). So I would change, feed, try to keep awake for a little while and then swaddle up for sleep again.
With DS I would feed then change since he was screaming and the only thing that would stop him would be to feed him. If he had a big stinky diaper I would go ahead and change him first.
I feed then change then feed again too. My pedi told me to not wake baby up for feedings at night, so she is up and ready to eat right away. She then falls asleep during the feeding, so the change wakes her up for round two.

I always changed then fed with DD. I would make sure she didn't do #2 before I swaddled her back up and laid her down.

We change first then feed. The changing riles him up while the nursing puts him to sleep. Of course we will change him again after the feeding if he's pooped, but we try to always feed last.

This too! I've tried changing before feeding but it's much harder to get her to feed long enough. In between is so much more successful and I get better sleep myself
At first I would change and then feed- but I noticed he would often need to be changed before going to be as well. The last few days I've changed to feeding(both sides), then changing and then giving a little "go to sleep/calm down" snack after he's been changed.
Right now we are feeding then changing because he usually poops during his feeds. However, I think it would be a lot easier to get DS back to a decent sleep if we did the opposite. I like the idea of a little calm down/back to sleep top off; I am just so scared of the pain from latching that I have been trying to get him on and keep him on. Sigh. Practice makes perfect though, right?
