I went to my best friends shower when DD was super little, but that was only a 1.5 ish hour drive. 5 hours & a flight seems like a lot. I would send a gift & maybe plan for a time in the future to see each other once both babes are here. (:
I flew home for my BFF baby shower I was about 14 wks and I was only home for week. I flew from San Diego to Detroit. I didn't want to miss it since I missed her wedding, I was deployed to Afghanistan. But I did fly again when I was about 21 wks for my husband's predeployment leave, and again after I was 28 wks for my baby shower. I made sure to get direct flights so I didn't have to deal with running through the airport and people were nice and gave me the aisle seat so I could get up when I needed too.
You said that she is your BFF and she was there at your bridal shower and baby shower, I think you should try your best to be there at her shower too. And if you really can't, tell her and explain to her your reason. Your friend will feel sad of course, but I'm pretty much sure that she'll understand your situation.
Personally, if I was your best friend, I'd insist that you stay home!! Especially since it's her 3rd child, if it were her first, I'd make more of an effort. I would send a really nice gift though.
I voted SS. It is totally your call. If it was her first, I would try my darnedest to go. Maybe coming up with a very special personalized gift. I like PP's suggestion about getting together once both babies are born.
