26 week growth ultrasound

Did anyone else get a growth ultrasound at 26 weeks? I just had one today and they estimated baby's weight to be at the 17th percentile. This seems scary low to me but doc said not to worry unless it's under 5th percentile and even then can be fine.... Just curious is anyone else had a recent growth ultrasound and also what birth weights were for those whose babies measured on the small end during pregnancy...

Re: 26 week growth ultrasound

  • I had one and baby is in the 93rd percentile. I guess the measurements can be off by a lot. I would say if your doc isn't worried then you shouldn't be either. :)

  • I always have one around 28 weeks, which is pretty standard if your insurance covers it. Not everyone is going to be 50%...someone has to be in the upper and lower percentiles in order for there to be an average (my kids are always huge at >90th)! If your Dr isn't worried, I wouldn't be either (although I know that's unrealistic, Moms always worry...it's our job!!). Under 10th percentile is when they start watching more closely. :-)

  • I didn't have one and just posted about it actually because they told me I'm not getting an U/S until 37 weeks which seems late to me...

  • I had my 20 week a/s and my doctor hasn't scheduled another. I didn't have another with my first either.

Ah...you are new welcome and congrats.

I would trust your doctor more with medical advice then random internet strangers. So please try not to stress.

  • I had an US at 18 weeks and another one at 24 weeks, they told me how big baby was but not the percentile.  I ended up asking Dr. Google for average fetal weights during those weeks and compared that way.

  • First of all, growth scans are notorious for being off on the weight estimate. It can be over or under by a couple pounds, so I'd try to take it with a grain of salt. Not to mention, your OB isn't worried either. I know it's easier said than done, but I'm sure baby is just fine. Try not to worry!

  • I had one at 26 weeks and have to have another at 32 weeks. She was measuring 16th percentile at 20 weeks but by 26 weeks she was 1lb 14oz and 34th percentile. She must just be a late bloomer! Hopefully your babe has a growth spurt, but even so a small baby can still be just as healthy!!

  • My 26 week appt was 1 lb 9 oz, which was the 30th percentile. Like others said, no worries. Some babies are just smaller!

  • Ok thanks all-- I know the measurements can be way off anyway. Also seems like different offices use different percentile a for the same weight. The baby at 26 wks measured 1 pound 12 oz and the ultrasound report says 17th percentile but I see another poster had 1 pound 9 oz and was told 30th percentile. So who knows!!
  • I am on the opposite side of the spectrum. My LO is measuring in the 97th percentile but won't have a growth scan until 32-34 weeks.

  • Just remember someone has to be big and small. As long as you are on the charts that is good.
  • I'm having one in a couple of weeks. Just like everyone says some babies are on the small end and some on the large. Personally I'd rather be hearing that my baby is smaller than larger! 17th % sounds great!

  • I had a u/s at 25 weeks so they could see the spine better and Baby was measuring in the 10th percentile. The MD said she wasn't too concerned but they would keep a closer eye on Baby's size to make sure it keeps growing in proportion. It definitely makes me a little more nervous, but I am trying not too worry too much since the doc wasn't too concerned.
  • I had a scan at 24w6d to check my placenta and baby's spine (both are great thank goodness)! He was 1lb 13oz and I'm measuring a week ahead, I didn't get any percentile information though!

I really wish that Drs would do away with unnecessary procedures. Unless there is a problem expected during a routine appointment, or mother or baby is high risk, there is NO reason for so many scans. Drs create worry over nothing. Half the time these additional scans end up with mom getting an early induction or c-section and when baby is born there wasn't any problem anyway.

When X-ray first came out Drs used the shit out of them. It was new technology and literally they were waaaaay over used. And guess what. Drs found "problems" all the time. Problems with things that had NOTHING to do with what they were even looking for in the first place. Hundreds of people ended up getting back surgery bc X-rays were showing some issue with the spine (I don't remember what specifically it was) well guess what....what they were seeing was normal wear and tear and there was absolutely nothing wrong with the people and they had unnecessary surgery and recovery and in some cases complications for no reason

My point is...when you go looking for a problem you'll find one. Even if it's manifested.

Yes U/S give us incredible information. But they aren't needed nearly as often as they are done. Same thing with internal exams. There's no need!!!!!! Yes , there are certainly legitimate medical reasons occasionally for an internal check. But not every woman, every pregnancy, every week towards the end. They get people all worked up thinking they either are never going to go Into labor, stresses them out, and then end up with interventions to start something that most likely would have started on it's own OR it makes women believe they are going to have their baby that afternoon when in reality they still have a week to go and they just happened to be dilated slightly during the exam.

My rule is unless there is a real true blue concern, keep your hands off of me.

Whew. Um ... What was the OP about? I may have gotten carried away. :\">

  • I had a growth scan at 25 weeks (I get them regularly bc twins) and both were measuring around 2 lbs or pretty big. If your dr isn't worried , you shouldn't be. Some babies have to be the small ones.

I had a growth u/s with my first at 30ks because they were worried me not gaining much weight. I don't remember the exact percentile but they told me he would be over 8lbs at birth. He was an average 7lbs7oz and 18in long.

    Definitely not always accurate.

  • I know EXACTLY what you are going through. I have had to have three growth ultrasounds and it was stressful! My baby is in the low range like yours also, she is measuring 9 days behind in her belly and legs. After yesterday, my third growth scan, they deemed that she was just small and that there were no issues with my placenta or her having disorders (like my second growth scan doctor made me scared of!!!!). My husband and I are small people- I'm 5'2'' and he is 5'4'' so keep in mind small people typically make small babies as well. That's what we are assuming with our little one anyways!!

  • I had one last week at 26 weeks.. And I wasn't given percentile numbers.. but baby was measuring 28w2d on everything except for the head, which was 29w. EEK! Nurse made the comment at least youre having a c-section. Baby weight was 2lbs 4oz.

US doc didn't have any comments except that baby boy looked perfectly fine. I see my doc next Monday for follow up;.

  • When ds#1 was in utero he measured in the 3rd-5th%.  I had to go for weekly growth check u/s and non stress tests.  Turns out...he was just small and still is slim at 6 years old.
