I had something very similar with my first pregnancy. Baby was growing fine but at my 32 week ultrasound I started measuring small. Baby was measuring 29 weeks instead of 32. After being high risk and being diagnosed with IUGR (in uterine growth restriction) I began having high risk ultrasounds. Everything checked out fine w his heart rate.... He just wasn't growing. He never lost weight but he ended up only being 5 pounds at birth. I was induced a week early and nothing was wrong w my placenta or anything. My dr said sometimes we just make small baby's and they grow better out than in. I was never out on any special diet. My son is now 17 months and 20 pounds. He's small but otherwise healthy. They never were able to explain why it happened so I wouldn't worry too much
Just to add to the protein shakes--when I was pregnant with my twins, I did protein powder shakes made with Greek yogurt and/or high protein boost/ensure just to bump that protein amount up. I never did shakes as a meal substitute only as a supplement. Also, eggs are great! Also, delivering in a level 3 nicu has to help make you feel better, too! I delivered my twins at 34 weeks; feel free to pm me if you have nicu questions!

@Nichole7041 thank you so much for sharing your story and I'm so glad to hear of your possitive outcome! Interesting how your experience with this also started at 32 weeks!
@so72409 good tip! I love Greek yogurt ..so adding it to a protein shake will make it creamy as well as help with any aftertaste too I imagine.
I just had my two week appointment today at 32 weeks two days to check on high fluid and marginal placenta. I spent very early Sunday morning at the hospital in preterm labor the doctors got it under control. They think the high fluid, which was a 30 today, is the culprit. It's mentally draining to feel like you just get to a point of acceptance with one complication and then you are told about another.
Anyway, at my last appointment we asked how the baby was measuring compared to the 28 week measurements. The doctor and the sonographer were both adamant that measurements are done monthly rather than every two weeks since babies can have fluctuations in their weight and can have growth spurts during their development. So, rather than measure every two and potentailly catch the baby on a day when it has slimmed down or had a spurt, the doctors at Hopkins prefer to observe a longer time period for growth comparison.
I am sorry that you received disappointing news. Hopefully baby starts plumping up soon. I do drink a protein shake in the mornings from a company called Melaluca. I love it and have used the product for a long time now. The chocolate tastes like actual chocolate, not chalk, and ther is only three grams of sugar per serving, much lower than a lot of other options out there.

Oh man... I'm sorry to hear of how you spent your Sunday... but I'm glad the doctors got it under control. It's definitely mentally draining-- hang in there though, we're almost at the finish line!!!
My doctor did mention the possibility of us having caught the baby in a weird growth period.. Especially since we see/measure him so frequently I guess we can't expect him to be perfect/on track all the time.. So I'll let him slide this one time but he better get it together by his next scan.
@AeandJb yes that's reassuring! Initial she did mention doing a scan sooner but after looking at the big picture she decided that everything else was and has been too perfect up untill now to worry about one set of measurements. Plus with having twice a week NSTs shes comfortable with being able to keep an eye on him/me that way and giving him the chance to absorb the extra protein in the meantime. He's in major trouble if he doesn't plump up in 2 weeks so I hope he senses the urgency. I'm confident that all will be ok.
I'm so sorry you are going through this. My hope for you is it was a bad scan. My son was estimated to be 10 +lbs for a scan and was born 9 lbs exactly. I will be praying for you and your sweet baby.
I don't have any experience on this subject but I am sending positive thoughts and lots of prayers your way. Sounds like you have a great plan in place, grow baby grow!
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear this. I don't have much to add other than there are some decently tasty protein bars out there... Lots of hugs, thoughts and prayers coming your way!!
Just FYI, different protein sources absorb at different rates in the body, so it's probably best to eat frequent varied rich sources of protein rather than relying on really high instant sources (ie. Whey powders alone)
Big hugs to you and LO. I'll have my FX for you both that the next check up is nothing but good news. I'm so sorry you're going through this but glad we have some N14 momma's around that have had suggestions for upping your protein intake.
No experience with this but wanted to send you my support. You've been through so much . Hang in there and I'll be saying prayers for you. Grow baby grow!
I have a fibroid on my uterus and one of the issues they can cause is taking nutrients away from the baby, I have a 32 week u/s on Oct 2nd. I don't do protein powder but I eat protein every 2 hours, bfast is egg whites and cheese, then 2 hours later a banana and peanut butter, 2 hours later usually almonds or greek yogurt. For lunch hummus, veggies and half a tuna sandwich, snack is 3/4 cup regular cottage cheese mixed with a tablespoon of flavored cottage cheese so its not as disgusting! We always have meat and potatoes for supper. There are all kinds of ways to eat more protein.
Also, with my first pregnancy my baby had SUA (Single Umbilical Artery) and they gave me monthly ultrasounds to check his growth. They also said if he stopped growing they would have to take him early because he'd do better outside but that never happened. Hopefully they just caught your baby in between growth spurts and this is all precautionary!
I have no experience with this but I am SSOOO sorry you're having to deal with it! I can imagine the anxiety and stress you much be feeling! I'm glad that your Dr has a plan though. Hopefully knowing that your doctor feels confident enough to take him if all else fails will give you peace of mind and on the bright side you'd be able to meet LO a little bit early!! Prayers that you and LO stay super healthy and no matter what happens, everything turns our great
I am so sorry you are having to deal with this! Sending T&Ps your way.
You could certainly get to 150 g of protein through food if that is your preference, but if it's harder to eat these days, the supplements are a good option. I stopped reading responses on page 2, so apologies if these are repeat recommendations:
-add the protein powder to pudding if you get sick of drinking it (mix it into the instant kind during the cooking, don't add the dry powder to the already made pudding, it will be lumpy)
-Beneprotein is an unflavored protein powder that you should be able to get at the pharmacy or if not you can just order it online. It isn't as high in protein as some of the other protein powders out there, but you can easily mix it in to stuff like cream soups and mashed potatoes to up their protein content (again, add in the cooking process or whisk it in to a bit of milk before adding to food to improve the texture). Unjury is another good brand of unflavored protein powder with a higher protein content, but no guarantees about how well it will cook into foods. As far as a I know Unjury is only available online. I believe GNC offers an unflavored protein powder, but I'm not at all familiar with that one.
-Turn the clear protein supplements (Boost Resource Breeze is one brand) into slushies or popsicles
There are lots of phone and web apps, I like My Fitness Pal, if you need to get really specific about tracking how much protein you are getting in. That app makes it much easier!
I'm so glad he's alive and kicking in there! My heart dropped when I saw the title! I have no advice, but you will be in my prayers, take it easy and eat lots of protein! Please keep us updated!
Lurking from D14 but just wanted to share another happy success story, a friend of mine went in at 32 weeks leaking fluid, turned out she had a pinhole leak. But when they did an US to check baby's growth they found she had stopped growing at 29 weeks. They did NST's and biweekly ultrasounds after that, and I'm happy to say she delivered a happy healthy 6lb6oz baby at 39 weeks. She's 6 months old now and definitely still teeny (just in 3-6 month sizes now) but she's healthy and the happiest baby I've ever met. FX for you and sending grow baby grow vibes!
I'm sorry that you're dealing with this, I had IUGR with my daugher, and am now dealing with it this pregnancy as well. What you're doctor is telling you is quite different than what my high risk dr told me. For one, nothing that I did in my diet helped... of course I tried, but nothing made a difference.
They did growth scans every three weeks for us, the first two establish a growth curve and then after that you see if the baby maintains the curve. When they continue to fall off the curve, they deliver you early, but they try as hard as they can to get you to 37 weeks.
In my case, it was discovered at 20 weeks, so we had more time to watch growth. We also had a HUGE host of problems with not clear fluid and NO fluid (2 cm), so there was more of a worry of chromosomal abnormalities, however after an amnio, we discovered that she was fine, I just had a crappy placenta. Show was born at 37 weeks, 3 pounds, 10 ounces, and spent 19 days in the NICU. She was beautiful and breathing, and eating, just tiny. She only had to stay in the NICU b/c she had no body fat to keep her warm so all of her energy was spent on maintaining her temp, and she couldn't stay awake for feedings. Once she could stay awake and eat all 8 bottles a day, and maintain temp, and gain at least 1.5 ounces per day, she could come home She is very healthy! My birth story is on my youtube channel if you want to hear more about it. Here is part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSWiUmGu4SM
