Breastfeeding

New and scarred

Hello all….
I'm new to this…I'm about 36 weeks and I'm really considering and getting all the necessary info needed to bf my lil mama when she comes…but one question..what are the best methods of cleaning your nipples and do you have a routine? Sounds weird i know…but my bestie said she would wipe hers down with just a hot cloths after feeding…n thats it. i know there are a ton of like lotions or gels or whatever out there to ensure cleansing and also to help with some discomfort. but I'm like totally lost to what to do. Sorry if i sound clueless but thanks for the advice in advance

phew me neither! was getting nervous for a second that maybe i was doing it all wrong!

in the beginning i never soaped them because they were very sensitive. at most after feedings i let them air dry a bit with the BM still on - it can soothe the nips if they're sore

  • to help with discomfort or dryness in the early weeks, you can use coconut oil to help moisturize your nipples (or purchase a commercially made nipple ointment- lansinoh, motherlove, and earth mama angel baby are a couple of brands).
  • Ditto to the rest of the ladies. Except I wash my boobs daily in the shower, with body wash. But never before or after nursing. I used Lansinoh and hated it. I liked Earth Mama, Angel Baby nipple balm and Apno when they really hurt.

  • I always put a little expressed milk on my nipples and let them dry in the early weeks. Breast milk can help with healing and dryness.

Ditto PPs - I've never washed them, expressed bm and allowing to airdry will help them heal, love earth mama angel baby nipple butter or coconut oil for comfort in early days.

ETA: what about a class to help you prepare and have a sense of what to expect? Ours was very helpful.
