Helmet moms

So to make a long story short, my LO was in a helmet from 4 months to 6 months because of plagiocephaly and a mild case of torticollis.  At 6 months his scan went from 18mm at 4 months to 8mm at 6 months so we were told he was okay to stop wearing the helmet and just make sure to watch him carefully.  From that point on he has been rolling and sitting up on is own so I thought we were all good.

Well, at his 9 month pedi appt she was concerned and wants him to be scanned again.  We have an appointment next Monday for a rescan.  I really dont notice a difference, maybe it is because of all his hair or because it isnt as severe as he was at 4 months.  Anyone been through this or have any advice?  He is in PT and goes about once or twice a month.  He is army crawling and barely ever on his back, nor in his car seat for a long amount of time.  The only thing I do see as a problem is that he sleeps at night for 10 or 11 hours straight where sometimes he is on his back/belly/side sleeping.

I just feel like I let LO down having to go back.....like I didnt do my job!

Re: Helmet moms

  • Boy is he cute!!!

The head does not start to harden up until 8 or 9 months, so if he has still been favoring one side, he could definitely have flattened back out a bit. My DS wore a helmet  from about 6 to 8 months I think, so we did not see any re-flattening. What does the PT say? Does s/he say that the torticollis is resolved?

Your pedi might just be wanting to err on the side of caution.

  • Ryan wore his helmet for almost exactly 6 months. From 6-12 months old. His head is still pretty flat but its way better than it was. His head started out shaped weird due to his position in labor for 15the hours. My OB said he was wedged so tightly in my pelvis it was hard to get him out during my c/s! You are not letting him down!! You are doing what's best for him, which I know can be hard on you. Hugs.

  • I just got my son's helmet today :( I know how you feel about letting him down. The doctor told me that on a scale of 1 to 6 with 6 being the worst my son's head was a 5. We go back in 8 weeks to see how much it has improved.

One thing the doctor said was that we are going to have to keep an eye on his head shape also because his soft spot is barely there and he is a little young for it to be closing. Did anyone else have this problem?

  • First of all, you did NOTHING wrong and if the orthotist let your LO graduate, then you thought all was OK.

Second, the Torticollis, if unresolved, can really affect head shape if there still is a flat spot. Sometimes it can cause drooping in the facial muscles. So I'd make sure that the Tort has been addressed.

My son (2-1/4) wore 2 DOC Bands from 4.25-8.5 months for severe brachycephaly (CI of 100%) and I was definitely worried about regression, but thankfully it didn't happen. I think, in part, because he started tummy sleeping when he finished with his helmet. At this time, you'd never know he did PT for 7 months and wore 2 helmets. So starting young/ending young can be positive too.

I hope everything gets resolved. ((HUG))
