  • Just to add to the protein shakes--when I was pregnant with my twins, I did protein powder shakes made with Greek yogurt and/or high protein boost/ensure just to bump that protein amount up. I never did shakes as a meal substitute only as a supplement. Also, eggs are great! Also, delivering in a level 3 nicu has to help make you feel better, too! I delivered my twins at 34 weeks; feel free to pm me if you have nicu questions!

  • Just FYI, different protein sources absorb at different rates in the body, so it's probably best to eat frequent varied rich sources of protein rather than relying on really high instant sources (ie. Whey powders alone)

Almonds, cottage cheese, shrimp, tuna, pumpkin seeds, humus, edamame, oatmeal, cheese.

You'd be surprised how it adds up when you snack every other hour.

    Thinking of you and LO!

  • Praying baby keeps growing!!

I have a fibroid on my uterus and one of the issues they can cause is taking nutrients away from the baby, I have a 32 week u/s on Oct 2nd.  I don't do protein powder but I eat protein every 2 hours, bfast is egg whites and cheese, then 2 hours later a banana and peanut butter, 2 hours later usually almonds or greek yogurt.  For lunch hummus, veggies and half a tuna sandwich, snack is 3/4 cup regular cottage cheese mixed with a tablespoon of flavored cottage cheese so its not as disgusting!  We always have meat and potatoes for supper.  There are all kinds of ways to eat more protein.

Also, with my first pregnancy my baby had SUA (Single Umbilical Artery) and they gave me monthly ultrasounds to check his growth.  They also said if he stopped growing they would have to take him early because he'd do better outside but that never happened.  Hopefully they just caught your baby in between growth spurts and this is all precautionary!

  • I have no experience with this but I am SSOOO sorry you're having to deal with it! I can imagine the anxiety and stress you much be feeling! I'm glad that your Dr has a plan though. Hopefully knowing that your doctor feels confident enough to take him if all else fails will give you peace of mind and on the bright side you'd be able to meet LO a little bit early!! Prayers that you and LO stay super healthy and no matter what happens, everything turns our great :)

  • I am so sorry you are having to deal with this!  Sending T&Ps your way.

You could certainly get to 150 g of protein through food if that is your preference, but if it's harder to eat these days, the supplements are a good option.  I stopped reading responses on page 2, so apologies if these are repeat recommendations:
-add the protein powder to pudding if you get sick of drinking it (mix it into the instant kind during the cooking, don't add the dry powder to the already made pudding, it will be lumpy)
-Beneprotein is an unflavored protein powder that you should be able to get at the pharmacy or if not you can just order it online.  It isn't as high in protein as some of the other protein powders out there, but you can easily mix it in to stuff like cream soups and mashed potatoes to up their protein content (again, add in the cooking process or whisk it in to a bit of milk before adding to food to improve the texture).  Unjury is another good brand of unflavored protein powder with a higher protein content, but no guarantees about how well it will cook into foods.  As far as a I know Unjury is only available online.  I believe GNC offers an unflavored protein powder, but I'm not at all familiar with that one.
-Turn the clear protein supplements (Boost Resource Breeze is one brand) into slushies or popsicles

There are lots of phone and web apps, I like My Fitness Pal, if you need to get really specific about tracking how much protein you are getting in.  That app makes it much easier!

  • I'm sorry that you're dealing with this, I had IUGR with my daugher, and am now dealing with it this pregnancy as well. What you're doctor is telling you is quite different than what my high risk dr told me. For one, nothing that I did in my diet helped... of course I tried, but nothing made a difference.

They did growth scans every three weeks for us, the first two establish a growth curve and then after that you see if the baby maintains the curve. When they continue to fall off the curve, they deliver you early, but they try as hard as they can to get you to 37 weeks.

In my case, it was discovered at 20 weeks, so we had more time to watch growth. We also had a HUGE host of problems with not clear fluid and NO fluid (2 cm), so there was more of a worry of chromosomal abnormalities, however after an amnio, we discovered that she was fine, I just had a crappy placenta. Show was born at 37 weeks, 3 pounds, 10 ounces, and spent 19 days in the NICU. She was beautiful and breathing, and eating, just tiny. She only had to stay in the NICU b/c she had no body fat to keep her warm so all of her energy was spent on maintaining her temp, and she couldn't stay awake for feedings. Once she could stay awake and eat all 8 bottles a day, and maintain temp, and gain at least 1.5 ounces per day, she could come home :) She is very healthy! My birth story is on my youtube channel if you want to hear more about it. Here is part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSWiUmGu4SM

Good Luck, IUGR babies are fighters!!
