isn't one glass (wine/beer) acceptable after feeding your LO? Wouldn't it metabolize through your system and out pretty quickly? I want wine ASAP but I have a feeling I wont feel human or up to it for a couple weeks at least
Yes. Although actually the best time to drink is while feeding your LO, bc by the time it's in your blood, LO is done feeding - then there is more time to metabolize it before the next feeding. One drink is fine...
I like the guideline "if you are ok to drive, you are ok to breastfeed" - but be warned, after 9 months of not drinking, a half glass might be all it takes to feel completely unsafe to drive.
I've heard people say that pumping and dumping isn't necessary --- while it IS true that pumping will not rid your body of the alcohol any faster, if you are skipping a feed because of drinking (ie you had 4), you DO need to pump - otherwise your supply will drop. Whether you dilute that milk or dump it is a personal choice.
ohh drinking AND feeding I think I like that system better ;-)
Im a big time light weight. I'm thinking it'll be a couple months before I actually feel like having a drink.
I'm not sure what you consider a "reasonable amount of time". I'm making DH sneak champange into the hospital, and I will be drinking it as soon as I feel up to it.
ETA: And after that, red wine.
@theresat858 I also wanted to do this, but I also want to breast feed, and I'm a newb, and I don't know the rules on that (how much is ok, or when, or anything at all). Teach me (because I think you did/do breast feed, right?).
I had hard cider on my hospital bag shopping list, so....
As soon as I can get my hands on that sucker.
(Also, lol @ "reasonable amount of time". Hopefully we don't have to walk on eggshells any more. The last time we talked about this completely turned me off.)

I'm with Purp. I'm going to have a giant glass of bubbly moscato. I already picked out my next victim, it's in the fridge now.
YES! One of my UOs a couple weeks back was that I didn't really enjoy wine that much, but give me ALL moscato wine. I really like sweet dessert wines. I'm not a big drinker, but that will be my first when I do have my first glass.
As for hard alcohol, my favorite drink is Blueberry Stoli and lemonade.
What is considered reasonable? Because I want a Guiness in the hospital. But we'll see if I REALLY want it that bad.
I'll be having a Headytopper that we saved from our wedding gift bags. Then Malbec or whatever people gift us with when they visit (they do bring wine right???).
Lol. I've never received liquor after delivery. The only thing I've received is flowers and balloons. Am I getting the short end of the stick?
I don't drink but for some reason alcohol always seems like it would taste soooo good, so after I have the baby I usually have a drink or two a month or two after
Baby 1- miller lite, not exciting Last time it was crab-brrr ita- YUCK
This time I have seen a few things I might try like Apple Rita or the Orchard something... And now the pumpkin ale sounds good. Hah I don't even know what that is!
I don't think there is any shame in indulging in an adult beverage. I bought those breast milk testers last time and no shame in that either
I would like a nice glass of red wine. We did a bunch of wine tasting weekends right before we found out I was pregnant and belong to a wine club so we have at least four cases sitting at the house. (DH isn't allowed to drink the wine without me. He has to stick to beer and his tequila.)
My breastfeeding class also mentioned that the best time to have a drink is while breastfeeding because it won't hit your milk immediately and gives the longest time to metabolize between feedings. She mentioned the "if you are OK to drive, you can breastfeed thing" . My thought was legally I can drive at .08 but that seems a little high to feed my baby.
.08 won't take you long to reach, that isn't much at all... But I drank 2-3 of those cranbritas last time in an hour and a half and by 3 hrs it was negative on my test stri
I think they say that because you can blow .08 but your body isn't producing .08 in all secreted areas. You may physically be producing like 1/4 of that in your milk at that time... I made that number up

A couple of my college girlfriends have gifted wine when going to visit IN hospital so I fully expect the same treatment. Balloons are not needed.

Also, just FYI: A little dark beer is said to help your milk come in. I'm doing it for the baby!
I've heard that, too. It's one of those old wise tales, I guess.
It is really recommended (even my OB mentioned it last time) because something about the barley in the dark beer...I didn't listen. I don't really drink so I wasn't going to jump in with a Guinness! I think lactation cookies use the same ingredients though so you dno't have to do the dark beer to get the benefit...
I'm not good enough with Google to find anything to support this but I have fuzzy memories of the information from my first.
A local whiskey, on the rocks. The bottle is like $80, so we don't buy it often. It will be a special treat.
Even though I love me some pumpkin ales, I have been enjoy some amber O'Douls this pregnancy, so I don't feel like I'm missing out on the beer. I've also tried a few brands of alcohol-removed wine, so, again, I don't feel like I'm missing out or craving something I can't have. A really good whiskey, though, that's been a hard one to replace.
i love this thread. i am drooling a little right now.
i plan to start with a magnificent champagne and then make up for the past 9 months with cold beer, red wine, maybe even a little sauvignon blanc since it will likely still be hot here in October. Then I will work my way back up to martinis and cosmos and fun things like that. Can i get a little sushi with that champagne, too?!

Technically, (at least in Louisiana) it is illegal to drive after having any alcohol at all. That .08 BAC is the legal presumption of intoxication that aids the prosecutor because now he doesn't have to put much more evidence on to show that you were intoxicated. /lawyering

Obviously, alcohol is the best baby gift ever.
Obviously I need to start looking for better friends! Lol. I will request tequila since pre-packaged margaritas are not even close to as good as the real thing. A bottle of patron will do.

Either Woodchuck Cider or Pumpkin Blue Moon in a brown sugar rimmed glass! I would say wine but I just can't resist seasonal drinks! I'm so glad I'm not due a month or two later when all of the fall flavors will be gone!!
Great board! I am at a toss up between a very large classic margarita on with rocks with lots of salt on the rim or a large glass of Cabernet. My best friend is coming into town for Thanksgiving and that is when I plan on enjoying a little alcohol. Can't wait!
My friend just made a trip to PA and brought me back a few bottles of wine from my favorite vineyard, Clover Hill. I think the Catawba will be my first victim.
Those who like sweet wines, you must try Pink Moscato.
Beer, particularly dark beer, can aid in milk production. It's the brewers yeast. I've done a ton of research on this subject. It didn't work for me, but then again, nothing did. You ladies should certainly experiment for yourselves though.
@mel689 I just bought a bottle of Pumking last week. It's sitting on the bar area of the kitchen now waiting for me! So needless to say, I think either that or a nice red wine will be my first drink

I'd love all the pumpkin everything (I heard there was a pumpkin cider! ) but Pumpking is def my favorite! I hope every place that carries it isn't out by the time I can have one
Also I can't wait for a bloody mary with blue cheese olives and Bakon vodka. Mmm mmmmm.
I've sort of been fantasizing about a giant Scorpion Bowl from some Chinese restaurant all to myself. Since DH's accident, I've never missed alcohol so much in my life. God, that sounds awful, but yet, it's true.
It'll probably be a glass of wine in the hospital, though. Our hospital does this fancy dinner with real dishes and glasses and candles and everything in your room, and it includes wine, and we will hopefully do that again.
OMG scorpion bowl!?! Hahaha I haven't had one of those since my drunken college years at this filthy bar called the Hong Kong that served "teriyaki chicken" (code for possible rat on a stick) as the bar was closing! Too funny!
--- @sweetadeline31 my first thought was the Kong too! I wonder if we ever crossed paths there during our respective drunken college years? You couldn't pay me to drink one of those now, though!

Depends on the day, some days I want a nice glass of moscato, others its a margarita on the rocks or a white wine sangria. I have beem pinning some yummy drink ideas on pinterest lately.
Beer, but not sure which! We've amassed quite the collection over the last 8 months. Probably a black IPA or a fruity sour. We're saving a bottle of Chocolate Rain imperial stout for our anniversary on 10/20, so that very well might be the first drink depending on how long this little guy wants to bake.
I don't drink much/often, but this time around I have genuinely been craving a cold frothy mug of Guiness beer! Although I am a sucker for anything pumpkin so I will happily be enjoying some pumpkin beer before it's all gone!
