Is it my fault?

Hi Moms, apologies in advance but this is a question mixed in with a vent...

My DD is 15 weeks old.  She has been on meds for acid reflux since 8.5 week sold, first Zantac for about 10 days and since then Prevacid compound.  I've also been on MSPI diet for about 2 months now.  I don't feel like her reflux is improving that much and I have to wonder if it's because of my overactive letdown/oversupply.  I hardly ever pump bc she refuses to drink from a bottle, so I know that isn't causing my oversupply issues.  She's now 3.5 months old and I thought that milk supply was supposed to regulate by 3 months.  I don't always feel OALD/OS issues, but rather they come and go.  Earlier today when I was feeding her she was squirming and almost wrestling my breast.  She doesn't cry when feeding but does squirm a lot at times.  I've been doing one-sided feedings for over 2 months now; I've also seen 2 LCs.  What else can I do?  I'm starting to wonder if her reflux is my fault due to my milk supply issues...

Re: Is it my fault?

  • See a chiropractor for reflux. Seriously. My daughter had terrible reflux; she couldn't eat without screaming. Medicine barely helped. Took her to a pediatric chiropractor and she was so much better. She stopped the medicine and her eating was scream-free.

We are seeing a chiropractor and I don't see it improving.  I've taken her 5 times already (twice/week).  How long did it take you to see improvement?

First, do not be too hard on yourself; you are already doing the best that you can. I had/have oversupply and my daughter had reflux. Some feedings were a total nightmare for both of us. Definitely increase your block feeding time and when you feel a letdown, take her off and let it flow into a towel or anything to catch the milk. Then relatch her back on when the flow slows down. Try feeding her in an upright position, hold her upright after a feeding, etc. That worked well for us. I'd nurse her on the same side for 3-4 feedings in a row & I pumped the other.

It will get better. Most babies outgrow reflux and it gets easier when they are able to sit.
Thanks so much for the advice and encouragement.  If I do feel a letdown I try to spray it into her burp cloth, but I don't always feel it (usually only if it's painful do I feel it).  I feed her in a sitting/upright position and try to hold her upright on my shoulder or lap for 30 minutes after eating.  Sometimes though it seems that she spits up more when upright than when laying down.... not sure what that's all about.

Question about nursing 3-4 times on same side.... doesn't that tell that breast that you need much more milk?  Also, wouldn't pumping the other one signal that the breast on that side needs to fill more milk too?  I've been avoiding pumping at all as much as possible, bc I thought each removal of milk signals the body to make more.... is that wrong?
  • My LO has reflux and I also had oversupply issues. My pedi told me that the meds don't stop the reflux, they just neutralize the acid so it's not as painful. Up until LO was 5 months old, we had lots of spit up. I had to burp for a long time after feeding as well. What helped me was to hold LO more upright while feeding and lean back as far as I could so letdown wasn't so forceful. She's on omeprezole.
My supply did not begin to even out until LO was about 5 months old. She's 7 months now, and her reflux is not an issue anymore. I saw big improvements at around 5.5 months. I still give her reflux meds, but I'm not increasing it in order to begin weaning her off it.
Hang in there! It WILL get better as your LO gets older. It's so frustrating. But like everything else, it will pass.
