rapid heart beat?

Does anyone have any experience with an occasional rapid heart beat? More frequently I have been experiencing it - at very random times. I feel out of breath a lot too; today when signing at church, I couldn't even sing! I went for walk today and I was winded after less than half a mile! I know that my body is pumping more blood and whatnot, but it just seems like a lot!

Re: rapid heart beat?

  • Yesterday my heart beat super fast and hard for about 30 seconds. I thought it was going to come out of my chest. It startled me, but I haven't felt it again.

  • Yep, I feel it once in a while.  When I'm laying down at night it gets especially bad...  it's like it going to beat out of my chest.  I've felt a bit short of breath, too.  Ah, hormones.

  • Girls, if this is something that continues to happen, I'd make sure to let your Dr. know.  It could be nothing, or it could be Non-Sustained Ventricular Tachycardia. That is when your heart beats out of control (like at 180-200 bpm) for less than 30 seconds. It usually will go away, but it could be a signal of issues with your heart.  And with being pg, better safe than sorry. With my last PG that ended with a loss, I was diagnosed with this and was put on beta blockers. But please note that I do have a pre-existing condition with my heart that made the doctors more cautious with my condition.

I just wanted to share what I know.

  • Hi Ladies,  good news, I asked my OB about this and she said it is completely normal!  I have a heart murmer but since finding out I am preg. I feel like I notice the palpatations a lot more (and I am not even having caffine!!).  So I asked my OB and she said if I wanted she could refer me to a heart doctor for peace of mind, but she said it is a VERY common symptom in pregnant women - even women who do not have heart murmers.

As PP mentioned, I would tell your OB about it so they are aware and can listen if they want to make sure everything sounds good - but my OB said it is completely normal.

  • The same thing happened to me early on.  I would be resting on the couch and my heart would start pounding and I could feel it in my neck and chest.  Very scary, but has subsided and I don't get it very often.  Sometimes I notice it when I wake up from a nap, but that's about it.

  • I have noticed the same thing.  I am overweight, but still fairly active and it has concerned me. I really just thought it was because we have more blood to be pumped nowadays.  I see my OB for the first time on Wednesday, so I will check in with her on this.

  • Thank you so much for your replies!
