Re: Flu Shot

  • I have to for work. It's required of all employees barring allergies or documented religious convictions. But then you have to wear a mask from October through March or April.
  • Loading the player...
  • I've never gotten one. I don't really see the need for it. I try and focus more on eating things to keep my immunity strong
  • Didn't we already do this?

    Anyway, nope.
  • Didn't we already do this? Anyway, nope.
I apologize if this has already been asked. My bad.

I am still undecided. I have never had a flu shot before but now that I have a LO and another on the way, I feel like maybe I should because I would hate for all to get sick. I am just trying to get an idea of what to do by seeing what others are doing because I'm at a total loss at this point.

  • Yes. I work at a hospital and would do it anyway (as I did before starting there).

Is there going to be a spin off poll asking if you are going to require people in close contact to get the shot? That's always a fun one too.

    BFP #1: 4/2/12 -- DD born 12/15/12. BFP #2: 4/1/14 -- CP. BFP #3: 4/28/14 -- EDD 1/10/15

Special snowflake. It means you don't fall into one of the categories listed.

DH, DS, and I will all get the flu shot this year just like we do every year.

FWIW the flu vaccine has been reccomended for everyone not just children and seniors. This has been true for several years now. My CNM at the holistic birth center has strongly reccomended it and the Tdap before baby arrive.

  • I just got mine at my last appointment. I'm one of those who usually never gets the shot and never gets the flu. But for both pregnancies I figure I need to be as healthy as possible and so I get the shot when pregnant. They did it during the appointment and it was free. I've never had any negative side effects aside from soreness in my arm.

  • It's required for my job, besides, I've been getting the flu shot for at least 15 years and have never had the flu.

Yes and so will anyone who plans to spend time with my new baby. I will be the family bitch who pisses my mom and sister off by saying if they don't get it, don't plan on coming to visit.

I already informed everyone in my family and friends likely to be around baby they need to get their whooping cough boosters before baby is born (except my bro who is allergic). Thousands of cases across the US and it's pretty much an infant's death sentance. I have an anti-vax friend with four kids I don't think I'll have baby around at all for that first year. :-( It pains me, but I gotta put baby's safety first in this case.
  • I work in a university and a fly a lot in the fall for work, so likelihood of exposure to the flu is high.  I'm definitely getting the shot this year.  I had the flu once and it was terrible.  I will never call a cold the flu again.  I do not want to go through that pregnant and I do not want to expose my baby to that.

  • @CrazyMonkeyBear‌ oh I would always make an informed decision. I meant do I want to read sad and terrifying stories with my Sunday breakfast? ;-)

    Hm, probably not with breakfast!

Definitely wait until at least lunch!

seriously though, I'm too emotional to read those.

    @TRexsMum‌

I'm not sure there is anyway you can ask her to get the shot. Maybe you could ask her if she plans on getting the shot, even if you already know the answer. She may surprise you!

i didn't when i was pregnant with DS for various pretty dumb reasons (and that was during the swine flu thing too).  i was lucky...i didn't get sick.  i have gotten it every year since then though, and i will get it this year.  SO always gets it...he works downtown and takes public transit.  DS has gotten it since he was old enough because he's spent time in daycares (not often, but it happens) and now he's in preschool too.  everything in the house comes to a grinding halt if i get sick enough to be knocked on my ass for several days (SO...he tries, he really does, but there's always inevitably a ton of catching up to do), so it's really dumb to not do it.

as far as other people getting vaccinated goes, i was really surprised.  talking to my mom and stepdad a few days ago, they told me that they got tdap boosters last fall in preparation for DS coming to visit with us last december, even though i'm pretty sure at nearly 4, DS was out of the "deadly" window for pertussis.  now i wonder how SO's dad will receive being asked to get his tdap renewed before winter.  we'll see.

edit: DS is also fully vaccinated in his own right, although the more people vaccinated the better, since vaccines aren't 100% effective.

  • We have stopped getting it the last few years. However with new baby coming at the peak of flu season you better believe we are all getting the shot ASAP.
  • Some years I get a flu shot, others not. This year I definitely will, as with pregnancy the immune system is weakened. I will also be sure to get a single dose shot, rather than the multi dose which is preserved with thimerasol, which contains mercury. To be clear, I am totally pro-vax, but I figure I'm being careful about the fish I eat so why take the risk on mercury in my flu vaccine when it's avoidable. And even the CDC recommends pregnant women opt for the single dose. I am planning to ask my parents to get flu and whooping cough vaccines as they will be visiting for awhile right after the baby is born. Unfortunately my mom is pretty anti-vax though so I'm not sure how well that's going to over.

  • Yes, between DS who goes to daycare and my mom who has diabetes type 1 and gets hit hard by a minor cold, I really don't want to leave anything to chance, ie some of my decision is more about protecting those around me, but still I was sick and on antibiotics when DS was born, I really don't want to repeat that experience.

  • Yes. Flu kills healthy people. ETA: actually, I implore the naysayers to just google that statement. Flu kills healthy people. See what comes up. I'm not talking conspiracy websites. Abc news, NBC, BBC. And with that, I'm out. Every flu season I am waist deep in flu patients in the ER who "didn't see the need," and who ended up in the ER bc yeah, it's that bad. This topic makes me stabby so I just gotta walk away.
I agree that it kills healthy people, but the strains that they pick to use in the vaccine each year are only a small percent of the main flu strains out there. Every year it's different. I'm not opposed to most vaccines, but I refuse to get another flu one again. The one time I "had" to get one, I ended up with the flu because they chose the wrong strains that year. Not worth it to me. (My kids won't be getting the vacc either)

I never miss a flu shot. But when I was pregnant with Ziggy and living in the hospital it wasn't offered to me. I know for a fact that my surrogate is anti-flu shot. I'm not sure how to go about asking her to get it. The last thing I want is for her to get viciously ill during or after pregnancy when her body is susceptible. Especially if it could have a negative impact on my child.
Just ask if she would consider it. Kind of sounds like something that should have been discussed before hand though? Maybe she has a reason for not wanting it (other than not liking shots). If she's had a bad reaction to the shot in the past, she's not going to want to get it again.
  • DS1 has asthma and his triggers are allergies and any kind of cold/flu/upper respiratory issue, so we all get one every year. If I can keep him out ofthe hospital, I will do it!!

  • Got my shot today... OB gave it to me herself. Probably would have been another month before work had one for me!

I'm so glad that you spoke to her and I really hope that she actually researches the difference and gets the shot, for herself, the baby, and her children.

  • @TRexsMum‌ -- has she discussed it with her midwife/OB? They might be able to persuade her. If she pushes back again I would ask her to please discuss it with her provider and consider their advice. I'm assuming she's not generally the type to take risks/ ignore medical advice or she wouldn't be a surrogate...

This is kinda flawed logic though -- it DID protect you from some strains of the flu.  I equate this to saying "well, this car only has front airbags and not side, so I might as well disable them all."

Also -- did you have the ACTUAL flu?  Like the kind that hospitalizes and kills many many people every year?
YES YES YES. The argument that "because it doesn't protect against all strains, I'm not getting it" is dumb.

Yes it was the actual flu. Cultured and crap at the drs office to be sure. (worst feeling ever!)

It's not that the vaccine just doesn't protect against all strains. smh They only pic a few out of many for the year and at least 8 out of 10 time THEY ARE WRONG!!! And as for airbags, I'm actually against those too. Especially in cars that are exposed to 100 degree heat on a regular basis, the bags break down over time and in many cases cause more hard than good. If you aren't not sitting in the exact spot the bag was designed for (too high, too low, hands not at 9 and 3, etc) it's proven that the person will sustain more injury than if there were no front airbag.
  • SO.. got into a big fight with the husband about the flu shot-the stupid flu shot! Ughhh I have never gotten one before, neither has he and we both try to live a healthy lifestyle not relying so much on the overuse of modern medicine. With that being said, I think its in my best interest and the baby's to get the flu shot. I haven't found any evidence that the flu shot could cause me or the baby severe harm...if anything it wont be effective. I work in retail, with generally older people, I'm delivering in the winter...seems only logical to protect myself and the baby as much as I can. Maybe I'm missing some information and if someone has some reputable sources on the harm of the flu shot I would love to be educated. However someone's opinion that the flu shot is bullshit doesn't quite sway me!
  • Yeah, I feel really bad for people who believe everything the doctors tell you. Flu shot along with other vaccines is probably the WORST thing you can do to a new born child. Your immune system becomes dependent on the unnecessary chemicals in your body which is why you hear stories about "oh my wife/husband/kid. almost died the one year she didn't get a flu shot" You don't say?!? Open your eyes. Or don't, it's your life, I'm just supplying the water, can't make you drink...

That's funny because the exact opposite happened to me. I got sick for years, sometimes up to 6 times in one year UNTIL I started getting the flu shot. Since I started getting the flu shot, I have not been sick ONCE.

  • Already have a compromised immune system so the flu shot is pretty much a yearly thing for me.  Hoping that my OB will give it to me at my next appointment so I don't need to go search out the shot as I usually do (Okay I usually just call my GP to make an appointment, I schedule my yearly check up around when the shot comes out so I can get it all done in one appointment).

I caught the H1N1 virus a few years back before I could get in for my shot (not that it would have protected me 100%) and man was that scary!  I was in and out of the hospital three times over the course of two weeks.  While I didn't have a really bad case, it played havoc with my diabetes and I had to be put on IV fluids and glucose to try and keep my sugars up as I couldn't eat anything.

PLEASE STOP TALKING. This is so full of fallacies I do not even know where to start!
Also, I can think of far worse things a human could do to a newborn but I would rather not because it makes me sick to my stomach.
