I personally had a 10 pound baby last year. Vaginally. It was painful, won't lie. But there was no reason to have a C Section. It was much safer for me and baby to NOT have a C Section which is surgery. A large baby is also not a reason to induce before 39 weeks because lungs aren't developed.
Furthermore, you don't need monthly U/S's because knowing in a month the baby is big won't make a difference. Maybe get one at 36 weeks when you have a final idea about baby's size. But even that, can't really prevent much and they are often wrong anyways.
I had an appointment last week, I was told if I go into labor before 35 weeks go to this hospital and after go to this one. My a/s looked great, healthy baby measuring 5 days ahead. I was tiny pre-pregnancy and never once has a c-section been discussed due to baby size and my husband's side has HUGE babies. My doctor mentioned a possible induction at 40 weeks if I have not gone due to size and a possible c-section if complications arise. My sister had twins and pushed for 2 hours, my niece went into distress and my sisters blood pressure spiked so they did an emergency c-section. If there are outside complications, I will agree with my doctor to do what is best for myself and my child. We discussed this and have the same agenda/plan, if I was uncomfortable and didn't agree I would talk to him about it.

I had a similar conversation with my ob my last visit. I was measuring a couple weeks ahead and in the 97th percentile. Although she didnt specifically mention c section it was implied. Her exact words were women cant deliver 12lb babies vaginally. It kind of caught me off guard at the moment. She did say not to worry and we can revisit after my growth scan at 32-34 weeks. I might schedule it for 33 weeks. I guess I have time to decide how I would want to proceed. My sister was induced due to the baby's suspected size and was a little over 8lbs. I would just recommend making a choice in how you want to proceed after the scan.
Well that's bullshit. There are women who have birthed 12 lb babies. I know a handful. Maybe in your doctor's practice and how she manages her patients' labors, but her assertion can not be universally applied to all women.
And most women who are suspected to have big babies don't have 12 lb babies. 9-10.5 is obviously much more common, and plenty of women, even petite women, birth babies in 9-10.5 range.

Yeah I was kind of floored by this, hence, didn't really say much. I just decided it is going to be my choice which I am not in favor of c sections. I have already had hernia surgery this year and really can't fatham another surgery unless medically necessary (complications while giving birth). I just need to find the right words if the time comes. The ob's have been great but ultimately it is my decision. I really didn't think they had a high c section rate and they did suggest they prefer vaginally deliveries when I first researched ob's. I get it will be hard but the measurements can be off 2lbs either way. I am just waiting it out until my growth scan.
My 3rd was 9 lbs 1 oz no tearing or stitches and I am normally small.
Although, my one and only appt with a midwife (with my first), I was told I had a very wide pelvis. Um, thanks?
I was told that by another doc bc I was having knee issues. The doc was trying to draw a picture of my hips to knee ratio and very politely say I have wide hips. Then the physical therapist said, "he's trying to tell you that you have birthing hips." Not so fun to hear back then, but now I can use them!
