Trouble TTC

AW: What are our chances??

I'm really driving myself crazy wondering if we have any kind of a chance this cycle or if the nurse was just placating me by letting us come in for our IUI. Last time they made a big deal about how to do a repeat beta "when" I get my BFP (ha), this time she's like, "If the beta does happen to be positive, then...."

Wednesday - OPKs failed me; strong ovary discomfort all day (like, hurt with every step) and then some stronger pinching ovary pain around 2pm; sex around 9pm, after abstaining 3 days.

Thursday - obviously negative OPK 11am after they'd been getting darker for days; emergency call to RE's office; IUI#1 at 3pm with 17 hours' worth of sperm (18 million motile, but level 2-3 motility). Ultrasound showed that my one mature follicle had already ovulated - it was deflated about halfway with significant fluid beside it.

We have MFI (2% morph, low counts, low motility), and I have treated level 1 endo. RE didn't seem hopeful about IUI as it was, and I feel like our chances this cycle are really more like our natural cycle chances (1-3%) since IUI was 24 hours after O pain?

Help me escape from this crazy land! Was the timing not so bad? Or was this IUI a waste of time and money? Thank you....

Re: AW: What are our chances??

  • So you had sex the day that you ovulated and an IUI the day after?  You did everything you could! The rest is out of your control. I don't think the IUI was a waste of money- I would have done the same.

How was your start up at school? What grade do you teach?

  • I never have ovulation pain so I can't comment on whether or not the timing of that is accurate... but no matter what, it sounds like your TI at least was perfectly timed.  After 17 hours your husband had 18 million motile, which sounds great to me! and on Wednesday he probably had a lot more than that from the abstaining. i don't know about the timing of your IUI but like jenmcd11 said - i would have done it too. might as well do all that you can, right? no regrets. good luck this cycle!

Married in 2011, NTNP until early 2012, TTC since early 2012

My husband was diagnosed with state IV colon cancer in 2009. Surgery and six rounds of chemo left him in remission (yay!) but with low testosterone. He took Androgel for two years starting in Jan 2011.
-SA in Jan 2013: big fat zero; stopped Androgel
    -varicocelectomy in June 2013
-SA in Dec 2013: 23mil/ml, really low morph
-SA in March 2014: Count doubled! Morphology apparently no longer an issue.

    Treatments:
    April 2014: hysteroscopy
    June 2014: TI (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel: 2 folliclces) = BFN
    July 2014: IUI#1 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 1 follicle, 23mil post-wash) = BFN
    August 2014: IUI#2 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 1 follicle, 43mil post-wash) = BFN
    September 2014: IUI#3 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 2 follicles, 15mil post-wash) = BFN
    October 2014: IUI#4 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 1-2 follicles, 12mil post-wash) = BFN
    November 2014: IUI#5 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel: 1 follicle, 23mil post-wash) = BFN
    December 2014: IUI#6 (gonal-f/ovidrel): 2 follicles, 55mil post-wash) = ???

    *all are welcome!*

  • Sounds to me like you did all you could. Your BD Wednesday night should have you covered. In a perfect world the IUI is done right before ovulation so that the sperm is there to meet the egg...but pinpointing ovulation is hard without a trigger.

I have had some sharp pains in the past that I would've SWORN were ovulation pains but then an u/s showed I hadnt actually ovulated yet. Dr said I must've been feeling it "gearing up." It's possible you ovulated later than you think.

Good luck, sweetie. I'll keep my FX for you. How was your IUI experience post surgery?

  • I'm with everyone else, you have done the best you could. I just wanted to say, every month that I used a trigger the pain always came BEFORE I ovulated. So you might be better off than you are thinking. Good luck!!!
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • @jenmcD11 Thanks, put that way it does sound pretty good! We were just so freaked out at missing the "right" time to come in for IUI. I teach high school - the students are so individual, it's really fun to be back at work with all of them. :)

@moto611 Oh you are so right! I didn't really think about how his #s were probably better the night before then. Maybe his hCG shots are working. :) Thank you thank you!!

@annaclaire256 Yay so glad you have had your O pains before O actually happened. I usually get random twinges for a day or so but never know exactly how it lines up with O. Hopefully our little egg had a chance. :) Post-surgery - the IUI was amazing!!! I told the nurse all about my history, and she had to try twice (bent it a bit more before the second try). I had hands clasped, lips moving, praying as hard as I could that it would go in, so when she said it did I gasped really loud and scared her and DH! So thankful. It was less painful than a Pap smear! Thank you for asking!

@pintobean39 Thanks, that's good to hear. And wow, I am just thrilled that your pain always came earlier. Such a relief right now. I wondered if I was being a crazy person to skip out the first day back to teaching and run to the doctor!

@rainbowbridge14 Thanks, I think I totally forgot that now my cervix is open so maybe we have half a shot at getting pregnant naturally!

@angelina2404 Thank you, great to know!

Just want to say, I was truly expecting everyone to say, BunnyBerry sorry if the truth hurts but this cycle is ruined and just wait for next AF. Must have been in a negative state of mind looking at everything yesterday. I am so relieved and almost feel relaxed now waiting for beta/AF! Hugs and kisses! What would I do without this board???

  • This sounds exactly like what happened to me last month.  I thought I went in for the IUI too late, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized the timing was actually pretty good. I've also heard that if you're dealing with MFI you want to do the IUI a little later rather than earlier.  I'm pretty sure my ovulation pain comes before I ovulate.  Sounds like you did everything you could.  I honestly don't think it was a waste for you to have done the IUI.

Official diagnosis: Unexplained IF. I am 32. I have low ovarian reserve (low AMH), and poor egg quality. I've also been diagnosed with mild glandular developmental arrest (lining problems, detected with EFT).

We are using open ID donor sperm. IUIs #1-7=BFN. IVF September 2014 antagonist protocol, 8R,5M,3F, 5 day transfer of 1 morula = BFN. IVF#2 planned for January 2015 (antagonist protocol + HGH).
