Breastfeeding

Left milk out :(

On my way up to bed last night I noticed my bag of pumped milk still sitting on the counter. I failed to put it in the fridge when I got home.

It had been about 5 hours. The bag is an insulated lunch bag, but no ice pack in it. The milk was a little cooler than room temp, but not much. I didn't throw it out yet, but I'm not feeling very optimistic. This would be his milk for Monday so it's got to sit all weekend in the fridge.

If it still smells ok Monday, would you serve it?

Re: Left milk out :(

  • It was freshly pumped that day correct? I'd at least refrigerate it until Monday and then smell it that day to make sure it's okay. I've read that it's fine up to 8 hours on the counter so if it was in a cooler I'd think it'd be okay.

  • Yeah, it was pumped that day and kept in a fridge in the bag. I'm trying to tell myself since it was insulated and cold it probably stayed petty cold the first hour or so.

  • It should be fine. Freshly pumped milk can be left at room temperature for up to 8 hours.
  • I think it's totally fine! Smell it Monday to make sure, but for that shorter length of time being left out, plus being inside of the insulated bag, I bet it's not spoiled at all.  Breast milk is very hearty!

  • I roomed in with LO overnight before she came home from the nicu. I pumped the whole night and had an insulated bag though the freezer packs were basically melted and the milk was just a tad cooler than room temp. I asked her nurse if it was ok (some were pumped at 9 pm and we didn't get home till maybe 11 am) she said it was fine and I fed it to LO and she didn't get sick or anything...

  • I'd totally serve it (if it smells ok). BM is much heartier than people think :)

  • Phew.. I finally brought myself to smell it this afternoon and it smelled just perfect. Yay!

I'll check it again Monday morning, but I think if it were going to turn it would be at least a little sour already.
