Pulling off during feedings

DD's epic growth spurt is over so she's not killing me with frequent long nursing sessions anymore, but now she's pulling off every few seconds, chewing on my nipples and smirking at me. Gaaaaaaahhhh.

AF just came last night and I know it can mess with supply, so I wonder if she's pulling off because the flow is slow. I can't do anything about that, so what's another way to deal with the pulling off and the biting? I'm so bruised!

Re: Pulling off during feedings

  • If I hold her in place, she fights me and chomps my nipple. :/

  • Today DD took her first nap in two weeks. It was 3.5 hours long. Naturally she woke up and started hollering just as DS went down for his nap. ::headdesk::

  • I'm dealing with this too. She'll nurse for a few minutes and then she'll try to rip my nipple off while looking around. She is distracted by the tiniest noise or movement. It's so annoying. The worst part is that she won't finish nursing once she's found something better to do, so I either just have to hang around with her on my lap until she's interested again, or go pump.

I love that she's discovering her world, but these distracted nursing sessions are soooo annoying!

  • My guy has just started doing this. I've been back to work for a month and I am worried he is preferring the bottle. He had a full out tantrum on the boob. Busted out the nipple shield and it worked to calm him down and finish. It kinda made me a little sad. :(
  • DS is getting really distracted while nursing too. I find it helps a little to go to a dark and quiet room and nurse (even better Iif he faces something unexciting like the wall). Sometimes I even put a cover / blanket over him. Sometimes that works, other times it just pisses him off.

  • Mine too. So squirmy when I'm feeding her in the morning. Now she's chomping and pulling the nip
  • My guy has been doing this a couple weeks now. One feeding, he'll pull off and reattach 50 times, the next he'll play the "let's see how far this nipple will stretch" game a few times and other times he'll just eat peacefully. No rhyme or reason to it.

  • Mine has had the occasional full blown tantrum at the boob as well. I have to get her to calm down with a pacifier and walking before we can go back to eating.
  • Same thing here. Little girl gets so distracted.

  • Same. Pulling off, pulling on nipple in general. My favorite is when he sticks his arm up out of the cover or tries to pull it off in general.

  • I have had to take the boob away from him a couple of times when is turning his head around but keeps the nip in his mouth. I'm like, wtf, my nipple is 3 inches long?!? I guess now we know how long it can stretch... hurts like a mofo, specially when he is holding on just to the end of it and chomping down on it like a fiend so he can look behind him. And we are making up for crap feedings during the day by being up 4-5 times a night again.... yay.....
  • Distracted nursing and rubber nipping are normal at this age. They're getting more aware of their surroundings :)

Haleigh is doing the same thing and I haven't tried the wall yet. I will have to do that! Right now she will arch her back and neck and try and look all around when she's about to fall asleep or eating. So frustrating!
The biting is driving me crazy too and she thinks it's funny as well!
